It does redirection that won't mess up search engine indices, and provides a permanent path that will always redirect to the splashed page. Alternatively, splash page content can be made to appear in a lightbox instead of redirecting. Splash page management is centralized, so it's easy to see what page is the active splash, and to quickly unset and reset different pages.
