The Beauty of Money

Voices from the Engraver, a brand new large and colourful traveling exhibit created by the Bank of Canada Museum in Ottawa in partnership with the Canadian Museum of History will make its first appearance in BC at the Okanagan Heritage Museum from June to October.

Do you ever post a letter or buy your lunch with art? You do it every day with stamps and money! From concept to final product, this interactive display allows you to experience the creative process, the technical skill and sheer artistry that underlie Canadian stamps and bank notes. See famous historic examples with local Okanagan images, such as the $100 bill with a picture of Okanagan Lake on the back, or the recent new stamps with “Pansies,” painted by Laurie Koss of Kelowna. Laurie will be on hand at our opening event to share her work with us, we encourage all our volunteers, members, and the public to attend the event and meet the artist! As part of the opening we will be serving refreshments and providing various activities for attendees, including the opportunity to create your own stamp or replica money. Please join us for the opening on Saturday June 6th at 3pm at the Okanagan Heritage Museum.

Asian Heritage Month on Display

May is Asian Heritage Month, and the Okanagan Heritage Museums is showcasing Asian artefacts and the local Asian Canadian cultures with a colourful new exhibit. Created in collaboration with the Asian Heritage Okanagan Committee, the display dances through the Exhibition Gallery with lots of information, personal stories and artefacts shared by the several Asian Canadian communities of Kelowna. In addition, a special display room showcases precious and rarely seen Asian objects from the Museum’s artefact collection. Don’t wait to come see this colourful display. You will want to return for another look with friends before it disappears at the end of May.

Members enjoyed behind-the-scenes tours, the music of Ogo Baroquo, and the world premiere of the latest historic video at the Members Soiree and AGM on March 31. Members were pleased to welcome six new board directors: Rolli Cacchioni, Tom Fellhauer, Cliff Jamieson, Lorne Sisley, Joel Wonnacott, and Carol Zuckerman.

Last November, workers discovered a time capsule from 1957 buried under the cornerstone of St. Paul’s United Church while preparing the building for demolition. Curatorial Manager, Amanda Snyder, worked with members from St. Paul's to safely extract the contents from the time capsule at a ceremony in March. All of the items, including the capsule itself, are currently on display at the OHM. Discover what the people who put the capsule together wanted us to know about them!
