Ideas. -Not neccessarily all of these will be implemented. There is also no set timeframe :-) The ones near the top are more likely/sooner, and near the bottom are less likely/farther out. Feel free to email me to vote these up or down. I can also be commissioned to include any of these or other features you have in mind in a more timely manner. peter@studio66design.com Activity Stream Tie-In ---------------------------- Add something like an "Attach document" checkbox to the "What's New" area. If checked, a document form would swoop in all jquery-like and save the day. Reporting ---------------------------- Show downlaod counts, who's uploading, storage space, etc. This will likely tie in to Boone George's Group Manamgent plugin. Additional Ajax functionality ----------------------------- Remove page refreshes when doing simple things like deleting. More flexible permissions ---------------------------- Make either a group-level or site-level option that would restrict uploads to group moderators. Better client-side validation ----------------------------- A user shouldn't have to wait for the document to be uploaded before they learn that the extension is not allowed. Include a Javascript check for this. It would also be great to check the size first with JS, but initial research into this was not fruitful. MIME Type Filtering --------------------------- Currently, only the extension is filtered. This provides weak security at best. Include a mime type check to make it (somewhat) more rigorous. Improved Sorting -------------------------- Expand the sorting functionality. Include more options (such as changing order), and use ajax instead of page refresh. SEARCHING! -------------------------- Yeah, it could use this. I'm worried about the top right section getting cluttered, perhaps this could be put in a widget. Most searches for other stuff are in widgets. The problem with using a widget, is that users would likely expect a site-wide document search. There's currently not a way to view documents from multiple groups at once. Document Previewing ---------------------------- Generate a preview of the document. Perhaps using the gview/google doc embedder plugin as a starting point. This would need some UI brainstorming, my current thinking is that a semi-transparent div can appear on hover (and follow the mouse) and have the preview inside. Either that, or display document previews as large icons themselves and give the whole thing a more visual browsing experience. The problem with the latter is that it falls apart for media types that can't be previewed. Categories --------------------------- Create a heirarchy for documents. Users would select a category for the document on upload from a list of checkboxes. Group moderators could edit the category list. Displaying categories would also take some UI work. The simplest option would be to not include a visual representation, just add "posted in ___" text. Then, include a filter (next to the sort?) to reduce the list to any given category. The othe end of the spectrum, is to have visual category "folders" where after clicking, the documents in the category would be revealed. Tags --------------------------- Add a system where users can add tag documents. This would behave like tags everywhere else: entered as a comma seperated list. Then, documents can be searched/filtered by any tag. Icanhaztagcloud? I'm currently researching the best way to do this, whether to create a table just for Group Docs, or to use a custom taxonomy in the current Wordpress blog taxonomy system. Per-group activation option --------------------------- Create a group level option of whether to use documents, similar to the option of whether to use a forum. Flexible file size limits --------------------------- Give the admin control of the maximum file size that can be uploaded. Currently the php.ini defaults are used. After initial research, this seems difficult to implement, as set_ini() is not allowed on many server setups. Smarter Widgets --------------------------- Currently the widgets only shows documents for public groups. This is to keep documents in private groups from being shown to everyone. Perhaps have the widget check the current user's group memberships, and show all relevant recent documents to the active user. Not sure about the performance hit here, as it would either require mulitple joins, or possibly a foreach loop and multiple queries. Comments ---------------------------- Add the ability for users to comment on documents.
