## Next Major Project: payments.php Refactor

**Why payments.php is the priority:**
1. Handles real money - PCI compliance concerns
2. 4,350 lines, 135 functions, 79 PHPCS ignores
3. Modern foundation exists: `app/Domain/PaymentIntegrations/` (81.59% coverage)
4. Clear extraction patterns from existing services
5. Second-largest god file after scheduled-orders.php

**Extraction Plan:**
1. PaymentMethodService - validation, lookup (~200 lines)
2. TokenizationService - token management (~600 lines)
3. OrderPaymentService - order payment data (~800 lines)
4. Gateway handlers - per-gateway services (~2,000 lines)

## The Verdict (Updated)

**Progress has been made.** The modern layers (Domain, QPilot Services, Nextime) are now production-grade with 97%+ coverage. Coverage reporting works. The codebase score improved from 3.5/10 to 4.2/10.

**But the core problem remains:** The legacy `src/` directory contains 36,219 lines of untested, procedural code that handles critical business logic including payments and scheduled orders. The path forward is incremental extraction, starting with `payments.php`.

**Next milestone**: Extract testable services from payments.php to enable safe modification of payment processing code.
