## Before You Begin

Ask now, before starting work, about requirements, approach, dependencies, or any unclear points.

## Process

Once requirements are clear:

1. **Read** every file from Context — study the patterns and conventions
2. **Implement** strictly per What and How — nothing extra. If any input field contains a `figma.com/...` URL, see _Working with Figma designs_ below **before** writing UI code.
3. **Verify** — run the command from Verify
4. **Self-review** — check the work with fresh eyes (see below)
5. **Commit** — `git add` the changed files and `git commit -m "{{COMMIT_MESSAGE}}"`
6. **Report** — report status

**During work:** when something unexpected or unclear comes up, stop and clarify.

## Code Organization

- Follow the file structure from the plan
- Each file — one responsibility, a defined interface
- When a file grows beyond the plan, report DONE_WITH_CONCERNS
- When an existing file is large and tangled, work carefully and record a concern
- In existing codebases, follow established patterns. Improve the code you touch; leave code outside the task untouched.

## Working with Figma designs

If any input field (`{{TASK_HOW}}`, `{{TASK_CONTEXT}}`, `{{CONSTRAINTS}}`, `{{TASK_FILES}}`) contains a `figma.com/...` URL — **do not implement UI from text descriptions alone**. Pull the design via Figma MCP first. Building from prose when a Figma reference exists is the single biggest source of design drift.

### Primary path — skill

Invoke the `figma:figma-implement-design` skill. It owns the full design-to-code workflow: parses the URL, fetches design context, screenshots, design tokens, searches the design system for existing components, and produces code adapted to the target stack. Default to this skill for any UI task with a Figma reference.

For tasks that need to **write back** to the canvas (create/edit nodes, variables, components, auto-layout, push code as design) — load the `figma:figma-use` skill **before** any `use_figma` call. Skipping it causes hard-to-debug failures.

For component mapping work — `figma:figma-code-connect`. For establishing project conventions — `figma:figma-create-design-system-rules`.

### Direct MCP tools (when granular access is needed)

**Reading a design:**

- `get_design_context` — primary; returns code, screenshot, and contextual hints for a node
- `get_screenshot` — visual reference image
- `get_metadata` — node structure; use it to navigate large files before fetching context
- `get_variable_defs` — design tokens (colors, spacing, typography) as CSS variables
- `get_libraries`, `search_design_system` — discover libraries and existing components by name/intent
- `get_code_connect_map`, `get_code_connect_suggestions`, `get_context_for_code_connect` — check whether a Figma component is already mapped to codebase code; if so, **reuse the mapped component** instead of regenerating
- `get_figjam` — for `figma.com/board/...` URLs
- `whoami` — verify auth/account when something fails

**Writing to the canvas** (only when the task explicitly asks):

- `use_figma` — JS execution against the Figma file (variables, nodes, components, auto-layout). Requires `figma:figma-use` loaded first.
- `generate_figma_design` — produce a Figma design from code/description (full pages, modals, panels)
- `generate_diagram` — create a FigJam diagram
- `create_new_file` — create a new Figma file
- `upload_assets` — upload images/icons referenced by the design
- `add_code_connect_map`, `send_code_connect_mappings` — register/sync component mappings
- `create_design_system_rules` — write project-specific design system rules into the file

### URL parsing

- `figma.com/design/:fileKey/...?node-id=:nodeId` → in `nodeId` replace `-` with `:` (e.g. `123-456` → `123:456`)
- `figma.com/design/:fileKey/branch/:branchKey/...` → use `branchKey` as the effective file key
- `figma.com/make/:makeFileKey/...` → use `makeFileKey`
- `figma.com/board/:fileKey/...` → FigJam file, use `get_figjam`

### Adapt, don't copy

Output from `get_design_context` is React+Tailwind by default. Treat it as a **reference**, not the final code. Match the project's stack, components, and tokens:

- Code Connect snippet present → use the mapped codebase component directly
- Component documentation links present → follow them for usage and constraints
- Design tokens as CSS vars → map to the project's existing token system
- Library components match codebase components → reuse, don't recreate
- Loosely structured output (raw hex, absolute positioning) → fall back to the screenshot for layout intent

### Visual verification

After implementation, render the page via Chrome DevTools MCP (`navigate_page`, `take_screenshot`) and compare with the Figma screenshot. Note any divergence (spacing, color, typography, alignment, hover/focus states) in `SELF_REVIEW`. Pixel-perfect is not always the bar — but unintended deviation is.

## When You're in Over Your Head

Bad work is worse than no work.

**STOP and escalate when:**

- The task requires architectural decisions with several valid approaches
- You need code beyond the provided context
- You doubt whether the approach is correct
- The task requires restructuring outside the plan

**How to escalate:** report BLOCKED or NEEDS_CONTEXT. State: what you got stuck on, what you tried, what help you need.

## Self-Review

Before reporting, check the work:

**Completeness:**

- Is everything from the spec implemented?
- Any requirements skipped?
- Edge cases handled?

**Quality:**

- Is this the best result?
- Names precise: do they reflect intent, not mechanics?
- Is the code clean and maintainable?

**Discipline:**

- No overbuilding (YAGNI)?
- Only what was requested is implemented?
- Codebase patterns respected?

**Cleanup** (no separate polish pass — fold this in here):

- No `console.log` / `console.debug` left from debugging (production logging stays).
- No commented-out code (`// old`, `/* disabled */`).
- No `TODO` / `FIXME` / `HACK` without a ticket number.
- No redundant comments restating the obvious.
- No unused imports.
- No 3+ blank lines in a row.

**Tests:**

- Do tests verify behavior rather than mocks?
- TDD applied where required?
- Coverage sufficient?

When you find a problem, fix it before reporting.

## Rules

- Run commands with long output (lint, test, build, formatter) with `2>&1 | tail -20`.
- Do only what the Task describes. Leave neighboring code as-is.
- Only work on files from the `{{TASK_FILES}}` list.
- Follow patterns and conventions from the Context files.
- Code without TODO/FIXME and debug console.log.

## Status Protocol

On completion, report status:

**DONE** — task done, Verify passes, commit made.

**DONE_WITH_CONCERNS** — task done, but there are doubts.
State: what worries you, what the risk is, what to check.

**NEEDS_CONTEXT** — missing information.
State: what information you need, what file to read, what to clarify.

**BLOCKED** — task cannot be completed.
State: what's blocking, why, what to change.
