# WTF-P portable project protocol v1

This directory defines the host-neutral data model stored by a WTF-P project. Runtime adapters may render friendly Markdown views, but the JSON records defined here are the interoperable source of truth.

## Logical resources

Logical URIs identify project data without exposing a workstation path or a runtime-specific directory:

| Logical URI | Conventional project-relative location | Record |
|---|---|---|
| `project://manifest` | `.planning/project.json` | Project identity and artifact index |
| `project://config` | `.planning/config.json` | User-visible workflow policy |
| `project://state` | `.planning/state.json` | Current lifecycle and progress |
| `project://decisions` | `.planning/decisions.json` | Locked, deferred, and discretionary decisions |
| `project://structure/outline` | `.planning/structure/outline.json` | Argument and section structure |
| `project://sections/{section}` | `.planning/sections/{section}/section.json` | Section status, claims, and artifact links |
| `project://sources/{source}` | `.planning/sources/{source}.json` | Bibliographic or data-source identity |
| `project://evidence/{evidence}` | `.planning/evidence/{evidence}.json` | Claim-level interpretation of a source |
| `project://checkpoints/{checkpoint}` | `.planning/checkpoints/{checkpoint}.json` | Orchestrator-managed interaction gate |
| `project://validations/{validation}` | `.planning/validations/{validation}.json` | Read-only verification result |

The conventional locations are adapter mappings, not absolute paths embedded in records. Adapters must reject URI traversal segments and must not resolve a logical URI outside the project root.

## Authored artifact resources

The JSON records above are the interoperable source of truth, while research and manuscript artifacts retain the format in which an author works. These logical URIs identify the portable artifact vocabulary used by workflows:

| Logical URI pattern | Conventional project-relative location | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| `project://materials/{artifact}` | author-selected path inside the project root | Existing notes, data, figures, bibliographies, or prior drafts discovered during mapping |
| `project://paper/{artifact}` | `paper/{artifact}` | Manuscript source, normally Markdown, LaTeX, or another author-selected text format |
| `project://sections/{section}/context` | `.planning/sections/{section}/context.md` | Author-approved section guidance |
| `project://sections/{section}/research` | `.planning/sections/{section}/research.md` | Evidence-grounded research synthesis |
| `project://sections/{section}/plans/{plan}` | `.planning/sections/{section}/plans/{plan}.md` | Immutable executable writing or revision plan |
| `project://sections/{section}/reviews/{review}` | `.planning/sections/{section}/reviews/{review}.md` | Detailed review notes linked to a validation record |
| `project://sections/{section}/summary` | `.planning/sections/{section}/summary.md` | Concise handoff from completed section work |
| `project://sections/{section}/handoff` | `.planning/sections/{section}/handoff.md` | Narrative session-continuity note linked to a checkpoint |
| `project://deliverables/{kind}/{artifact}` | `deliverables/{kind}/{artifact}` | Slides, posters, LaTeX exports, and other rendered outputs |
| `project://archives/{archive}/{artifact}` | `.planning/archives/{archive}/{artifact}` | Immutable milestone snapshot and delivery manifest |

`project://archives/checkpoints/{checkpoint}` stores an immutable, hashed portable-state snapshot. `project://archives/recovery/{artifact}` stores a verified pre-mutation recovery copy for an approved restore or major edit. Neither archive kind is implemented with Git state: adapters must not stage, commit, tag, check out, reset, or move a branch to create or restore one.

`{section}`, `{source}`, `{evidence}`, and other placeholders stand for one path-safe stable identifier, not an arbitrary path. `{artifact}` may contain contained path segments when an action deliberately selects a file. Contracts may use `*` or `**` only to declare a bounded set; persisted records always contain concrete logical URIs.

## Workflow execution rules

- Resolve logical URIs through the active adapter. A workflow must never send a literal logical URI to a shell command or reconstruct an adapter's physical path.
- Read and validate the JSON record before mutation. Preserve stable identifiers, reject unknown fields, advance `revision` and timestamps where the schema requires them, and replace a record atomically.
- Keep the manifest's `materials`, `manuscripts`, `deliverables`, and `archives` indexes synchronized with authored artifacts. Section records retain immutable plan/review history arrays, their current handoff, and linked checkpoints instead of hiding those relationships in prose.
- Keep authored prose, context, research, plans, reviews, summaries, handoffs, and deliverables in their native format. Link those artifacts from the relevant record instead of treating a Markdown control document as project state.
- Reconcile state from records and verified artifacts. Never infer lifecycle status from legacy `PROJECT.md`, `ROADMAP.md`, or `STATE.md` files.
- A workflow must not initialize a repository, create or switch branches, stage, commit, merge, push, or publish as an incidental side effect. An action that declares a `vcs.*` or external effect must preview the exact operation and cross a separate user gate immediately before that effect. Otherwise it may return only a non-executed handoff.

## Invariants

- Every record carries a versioned `schema` discriminator and a stable project or record identifier.
- Unknown object properties are rejected. Protocol evolution uses a new schema version instead of silently accepting misspelled fields.
- Source records establish identity and provenance. Evidence records separately state what a source supports, contradicts, or contextualizes.
- Author-controlled decisions are explicit data. Locked decisions cannot be silently weakened; deferred decisions stay out of active work.
- Interaction checkpoints record input requested by a workflow, but specialists do not conduct interaction themselves.
- A `state-snapshot` checkpoint is non-blocking and points to an immutable archive plus the logical URI, revision, and SHA-256 digest of every captured resource. Restores require a separate gate and a verified recovery archive.
- Validation records report findings and never imply that a mutation was applied.
- Timestamps use RFC 3339 date-time strings. Dates use ISO 8601 calendar dates.

`templates/` contains minimal valid examples and `schemas/` contains JSON Schema 2020-12 contracts. The examples are safe fixtures for adapter and conformance tests; they are not prose-writing templates.

<summary>Bundled WTF-P protocol resource: skills/wtfp-write-section/SKILL.md</summary>

---
name: wtfp-write-section
description: This skill drafts and revises manuscript sections from approved plans and evidence. It activates when an agent needs to write one section, execute an outline in dependency waves, make a small targeted prose or citation change, or perform the WTF-P write-section, execute-outline, or quick actions.
---

# Write a WTF-P Section

Produce traceable academic prose without losing the plan, evidence, or author voice.

## Select the action

- Use `write-section` to execute one writing or revision plan.
- Use `execute-outline` to execute independent plans in dependency-ordered waves.
- Use `quick` for a narrow, low-risk change that does not justify a full plan.

Read [references/actions.md](references/actions.md) for the selected action before editing manuscript content.

## Apply the writing contract

1. Resolve exact input and output paths inside the project root. Reject a missing, ambiguous, or already completed plan unless re-execution is explicitly approved.
2. Read the full plan plus `project://manifest`, `project://state`, `project://decisions`, `project://structure/outline`, the section record, linked context and research, source/evidence records, and only the prior prose needed for continuity.
3. Honor the author's decisions and the plan's scope. Record deviations and pause for any deviation that changes the thesis, evidence, structure, or promised result.
4. Support claims only with verified project evidence. Never fabricate citations, quotations, results, measurements, methods, or limitations.
5. Preserve citation keys, technical notation, figure and table references, and declared terminology.
6. Verify the result backward against the plan and assigned claims. Classify remaining gaps as fix now, accepted debt, revision work, or human review.
7. Update the Markdown section summary, synchronize the manuscript URI in `project://manifest`, and update the section record and `project://state` only after the manuscript write succeeds and validation is recorded.
8. Report changed files, word-count delta, evidence gaps, verification state, and the next review action.

## Bound execution

- Obtain approval at configured writing gates and before replacing existing output.
- Parallelize only plans that declare no dependency or overlapping output. Finish and validate each wave before starting the next.
- Keep one writer responsible for each output file within a wave; serialize shared-file updates.
- Return version-control work only as a non-executed handoff for a separate action that declares and gates the effect.
- Keep `quick` changes atomic, narrowly scoped, and independently checked. Escalate to a formal plan when the task changes structure, multiple claims, or multiple sections.

If a plan is not executable, return the exact defect and route it back to section planning rather than improvising around it.

<summary>Bundled WTF-P protocol resource: skills/wtfp-write-section/references/actions.md</summary>

# Section-writing actions

Use exactly one action procedure per invocation. Draft only from verified project evidence and preserve an explicit record of deviations.

## `write-section`

Contract: [protocol/actions/write-section.json](../../../actions/write-section.json)

1. Require an exact `project://sections/{section}/plans/{plan}` artifact linked from `project://sections/{section}` and verify its declared inputs, outputs, dependencies, validation, and approval state.
2. If a corresponding summary or manuscript output exists, show the overwrite or merge impact and require explicit re-execution approval.
3. Read the plan, `project://manifest`, `project://state`, `project://decisions`, `project://structure/outline`, section context and research, relevant source/evidence records, and enough neighboring prose to maintain continuity. For a literature-heavy section, require research and verified source/evidence coverage of the plan's factual claims before drafting. Route missing coverage through `research-gap` and a checkpoint; do not substitute model memory or search candidates for source records.
4. Present the plan objective, output path, target words, evidence obligations, and checkpoints at the configured writing gate.
5. Execute tasks in order against the exact `project://paper/{artifact}` output. For each task:
   - establish the paragraph or subsection's rhetorical job;
   - ground factual claims in verified sources or project results;
   - connect the content to assigned outline claim IDs;
   - preserve author terminology and citation keys;
   - run the task's local checks before continuing.
6. Pause when the plan requires unavailable evidence, author judgment, a changed thesis, a destructive rewrite, or another undeclared effect. Create a `project://checkpoints/{checkpoint}` record and resume only after its recorded resolution.
7. Maintain academic honesty. Use explicit placeholders for missing values or citations; never generate plausible-looking facts to smooth the draft.
8. Read the persisted manuscript text and run goal-backward verification against every plan success criterion and assigned outline claim. Calculate the actual body word count from the saved artifact with one stated deterministic method rather than trusting a worker self-report, plan target, or summary count. Check that count against the word target plus citation resolution through source/evidence records, figures and tables, terminology, transitions, and prohibited scope. Persist the read-only result at `project://validations/{validation}`.
9. If gaps remain, offer to fix bounded defects, accept documented debt, create a revision plan, or request human review. Do not mark the plan complete merely because prose exists.
10. After successful writing, create or update `project://sections/{section}/summary` in Markdown with outputs, measured word count, claims addressed, citations and assets used, decisions, deviations, validation, and next work.
11. Read back the manuscript, summary, and validation and verify that every linked path exists and is non-empty. Reconcile `manifest.artifacts.manuscripts`, the section record, and `project://state` only after all three persist consistently; otherwise leave shared records unreconciled and return a bounded repair action. Never run a VCS operation; return it only as a handoff to a separately declared action.

Completion requires readable manuscript output, a durable summary, honest verification, and consistent project state.

## `execute-outline`

Contract: [protocol/actions/execute-outline.json](../../../actions/execute-outline.json)

1. Require a valid `project://structure/outline`, matching section records, and an approved executable plan for every in-scope section. Exclude completed sections unless the author approves re-execution.
2. Parse declared dependencies and output paths. Reject cycles, missing prerequisites, and plans that claim the same output in one wave.
3. Build waves by dependency order. Within a wave, group only work that is both logically independent and write-disjoint.
4. Present the wave plan, word target, skipped work, approval points, and `project://config` parallelism limit.
5. For each wave:
   - give each writer the full plan plus section-scoped artifacts and read-only manifest, decisions, outline, source, and evidence records;
   - assign exactly one owner to each manuscript output;
   - collect complete, checkpoint, and blocked results independently;
   - validate each output and summary before updating shared state;
   - serialize section, state, source, and other shared-record updates;
   - resolve or explicitly skip blockers before releasing dependent waves.
6. Never let one failed section erase or mislabel successful sibling work. Preserve per-plan validation records and blocking checkpoints as a resumable ledger.
7. After the last releasable wave, perform a cross-section coherence pass over the manuscript in order:
   - thesis and claim consistency;
   - terminology and notation;
   - dependency and forward-reference correctness;
   - narrative progression and transitions;
   - repetition, contradiction, and scope;
   - figure, table, and citation continuity.
8. Route coherence gaps to bounded fixes, acceptance as known debt, or revision planning. Do not rewrite multiple sections concurrently when they share a conceptual defect.
9. Reconcile final section records and `project://state` from manuscript artifacts and per-plan validations, not from worker self-report alone. Do not create branches or commits around waves.

Completion requires dependency-correct execution, an explicit ledger for skipped or blocked work, and a manuscript-level coherence result.

## `quick`

Contract: [protocol/actions/quick.json](../../../actions/quick.json)

1. Require a concrete task description and resolve the exact target file and passage.
2. Confirm the task is narrow: one localized correction, citation repair, transition, wording improvement, or bounded addition. Route structural, multi-section, evidence-heavy, or thesis-changing work to planning.
3. Read only the target, adjacent context, `project://state`, relevant decisions and section record, and the specific evidence or style guidance required.
4. Show the intended semantic change when ambiguity or replacement risk exists.
5. Apply the smallest edit that satisfies the request. Preserve meaning, citations, notation, and formatting outside the target.
6. Verify the requested result, surrounding coherence, citation resolution, and unintended diff. Skip the full planning and independent-verifier loop, but never skip direct validation.
7. Update the section word count or `project://state` only if the change materially affects tracked values. Do not create a false summary or validation pass.
8. Report the exact location, result, validation, and whether a broader follow-up is warranted.

Completion requires an atomic, independently checked change with no hidden scope expansion.

</details>
## Record contract

Read: `project://manifest`, `project://config`, `project://state`, `project://decisions`, `project://structure/outline`, `project://sections/{section}`, `project://sections/{section}/context`, `project://sections/{section}/research`, `project://sections/{section}/plans/{plan}`, `project://sections/{section}/summary`, `project://sources/{source}`, `project://evidence/{evidence}`, `project://paper/{artifact}`.
Produce: `project://paper/{artifact}` (create), `project://paper/{artifact}` (update), `project://manifest` (update), `project://sections/{section}/summary` (create), `project://sections/{section}/summary` (update), `project://validations/{validation}` (create), `project://checkpoints/{checkpoint}` (create), `project://sections/{section}` (update), `project://state` (update).

Resolve every logical URI through the host adapter. Portable v1 JSON records are the source of truth: schema-validate before a write, preserve stable IDs, update revision and timestamps where required, and replace records atomically. Never pass a literal logical URI to a shell command or infer record state from a legacy Markdown control file.

Manuscript prose and supporting context, research, plan, review, summary, handoff, and deliverable artifacts retain their authored format (normally Markdown). Link them from the relevant v1 record; do not convert manuscript prose into project-state JSON.

## Procedure

1. Require one approved plan and resolve all linked context, research, source/evidence records, decisions, prior summary, existing target, and necessary neighboring prose before choosing create or update.
2. Before drafting a literature-heavy section, verify that its linked research artifact and source/evidence records cover the plan's factual claims. If coverage is missing, use the declared research workflow and pause at a checkpoint until verified records exist. Draft only the declared manuscript artifact; cite only resolvable sources, preserve author constraints, and stop at blocking decisions. A plausible bibliography entry, search candidate, or model memory is not a verified citation.
3. Read the persisted manuscript text back and calculate its actual body word count with one deterministic method; never copy a worker self-report, plan target, or summary count into project records. Validate the persisted draft against its plan and word budget.
4. Create or update the required Markdown summary with that measured count, then read back both manuscript and summary. Missing, empty, or inconsistent output is a failed completion condition, not permission to link a path that does not exist.
5. Persist the validation, synchronize the manuscript URI in `manifest.artifacts.manuscripts`, and reconcile section/state records only after manuscript, summary, and validation readback succeeds. If blocked, create the declared checkpoint and stop; do not commit or merge automatically.

## Safety and completion

Do not initialize a repository or run branch, stage, commit, merge, push, or publish operations. If requested, return a clearly labeled optional handoff for a separately authorized action.

Report the logical resources read, created, updated, archived, or deleted; the gates crossed; validation results; unresolved checkpoints; and the safest next action. Never claim a mutation that was not verified.
