# Protocol Architect

## Core Philosophy

> "The right protocol makes complexity invisible. The wrong one makes simple things hard."

## Decision Framework

### API Protocol Selection

| Need | Protocol | Why |
|------|----------|-----|
| CRUD resources, public API | **REST** | Ubiquitous, cacheable, well-tooled |
| Complex queries, many entities | **GraphQL** | Client-driven queries, no over/under-fetch |
| High-throughput microservices | **gRPC** | Binary, streaming, strong typing |
| Full-stack TypeScript | **tRPC** | End-to-end type safety, zero boilerplate |
| Server push, live updates | **WebSocket** | Bidirectional, persistent connection |
| One-way server push | **SSE** | Simple, HTTP-based, auto-reconnect |
| Event-driven, decoupled | **Message Queue** | Async, resilient, scalable |

### Decision Tree

```
Is it a public API?
├── Yes → REST (with OpenAPI spec)
└── No
    ├── TypeScript monorepo?
    │   └── Yes → tRPC
    └── No
        ├── Need real-time push?
        │   ├── Bidirectional → WebSocket
        │   └── Server → Client only → SSE
        └── No
            ├── Microservices internal?
            │   └── gRPC with Protobuf
            └── Complex nested queries?
                └── GraphQL
```

## API Design Rules

### REST
- Resource nouns, not verbs: `/users` not `/getUsers`
- Proper HTTP methods: GET (read), POST (create), PUT/PATCH (update), DELETE
- Status codes: 200, 201, 204, 400, 401, 403, 404, 409, 422, 429, 500
- Pagination: cursor-based for large datasets, offset for small
- Versioning: URL path (`/v1/`) or header (`Accept: application/vnd.api.v1+json`)

### GraphQL
- Schema-first design
- Mutations for writes, queries for reads
- DataLoader for N+1 prevention
- Depth limiting + query complexity analysis
- Persisted queries in production

### gRPC
- Protobuf schema as contract
- Unary, server-streaming, client-streaming, bidirectional
- Deadlines and cancellation
- Interceptors for auth, logging, metrics

### tRPC
- Router composition (merge routers)
- Zod validation on inputs
- Procedure types: query, mutation, subscription
- Context for auth and shared state

## Real-Time Patterns

### WebSocket
```
Client                          Server
  |--- connect ------------------>|
  |<-- connection_ack ------------|
  |--- subscribe(channel) ------->|
  |<-- data(channel, payload) ----|  (repeated)
  |--- unsubscribe(channel) ----->|
  |--- ping --------------------->|
  |<-- pong ----------------------|
```

### SSE
```
Client                          Server
  |--- GET /events -------------->|
  |<-- Content-Type: text/event-stream
  |<-- data: {"type":"update"} ---|  (repeated)
  |<-- event: ping ---------------|  (keepalive)
  |<-- id: 42 --------------------|  (resume point)
```

## MCP (Model Context Protocol)

### What is MCP?
Standard protocol for AI models to interact with external tools and data sources. Enables agents to call functions, read resources, and receive prompts.

### MCP Server Architecture
```
AI Model (Client)
    │
    ├── MCP Server A (filesystem)
    │   ├── Tools: read_file, write_file, search
    │   └── Resources: file://path/to/data
    │
    ├── MCP Server B (database)
    │   ├── Tools: query, insert, migrate
    │   └── Resources: db://schema/table
    │
    └── MCP Server C (API)
        ├── Tools: search, create_order
        └── Resources: api://docs/openapi
```

### MCP Server Design Checklist
- [ ] Define tools with JSON Schema inputs
- [ ] Implement `list_tools` and `call_tool` handlers
- [ ] Add resources for static data exposure
- [ ] Error handling: never crash on bad input
- [ ] Transport: stdio (local) or SSE (remote)
- [ ] Security: validate all inputs, sandbox file access
