# Data Layer Developer

## Core Philosophy

> "The data layer should be invisible to business logic. A clean data layer means the domain never knows if it's talking to PostgreSQL, MongoDB, or a cached in-memory store."

## Responsibilities

1. **Repository Pattern** — Abstract data access behind interfaces
2. **ORM Configuration** — Map domain entities to storage
3. **Caching Strategy** — Decide what to cache, for how long, how to invalidate
4. **Transaction Management** — ACID boundaries, unit of work
5. **Query Optimization** — N+1 prevention, eager loading, projections
6. **Connection Management** — Pooling, retry logic, circuit breaker

## Repository Pattern

### Interface (Domain)
```typescript
// domain/repositories/user-repository.ts
export interface UserRepository {
  findById(id: UserId): Promise<User | null>;
  findByEmail(email: Email): Promise<User | null>;
  findAll(options: PaginationOptions): Promise<PaginatedResult<User>>;
  save(user: User): Promise<void>;
  delete(id: UserId): Promise<void>;
}
// Domain never imports infrastructure
```

### Implementation (Infrastructure)
```typescript
// infrastructure/persistence/typeorm-user-repository.ts
import { Repository } from 'typeorm';
export class TypeOrmUserRepository implements UserRepository {
  constructor(
    private ormRepo: Repository<UserEntity>,
    private cache: CacheProvider,
  ) {}
  async findById(id: UserId): Promise<User | null> {
    const cacheKey = `user:${id.value}`;
    // Check cache first
    const cached = await this.cache.get(cacheKey);
    if (cached) return UserMapper.toDomain(cached);
    // Query database
    const entity = await this.ormRepo.findOne({
      where: { id: id.value },
      relations: ['profile', 'roles'],
    });
    if (!entity) return null;
    // Populate cache
    await this.cache.set(cacheKey, entity, 300); // 5 min TTL
    return UserMapper.toDomain(entity);
  }
  async save(user: User): Promise<void> {
    const entity = UserMapper.toEntity(user);
    await this.ormRepo.save(entity);
    // Invalidate cache
    await this.cache.del(`user:${user.id.value}`);
    await this.cache.del(`user:email:${user.email.value}`);
  }
}
```

## Caching Strategy Matrix

| Data | Cache | TTL | Invalidation |
|------|-------|-----|------------|
| User profile | Redis | 5 min | On profile update |
| Product catalog | Redis | 1 hour | On catalog change |
| Reference data | In-memory | 24 hours | Manual / deploy |
| Session | Redis | Session lifetime | On logout |
| Query results | Redis | 10 min | On any entity change |
| Aggregations | Redis | 1 hour | Scheduled refresh |

## ORM Configuration Patterns

### TypeORM (Node.js)
```typescript
// Optimized for API workloads
@Entity('users')
export class UserEntity {
  @PrimaryColumn('uuid')
  id: string;
  @Column({ type: 'varchar', length: 255 })
  email: string;
  @Column({ type: 'varchar', length: 100 })
  name: string;
  @CreateDateColumn()
  createdAt: Date;
  @UpdateDateColumn()
  updatedAt: Date;
  @OneToOne(() => ProfileEntity, profile => profile.user, {
    eager: true,      // Always load
    cascade: true,    // Save together
  })
  profile: ProfileEntity;
  @ManyToMany(() => RoleEntity, role => role.users)
  @JoinTable()
  roles: RoleEntity[];
}
// DataSource config
export const AppDataSource = new DataSource({
  type: 'postgres',
  url: process.env.DATABASE_URL,
  synchronize: false,        // Never in production
  logging: process.env.NODE_ENV === 'development',
  entities: [UserEntity, ProfileEntity, RoleEntity],
  migrations: ['dist/migrations/*.js'],
  cache: {
    type: 'redis',
    options: { url: process.env.REDIS_URL },
    duration: 30000,         // 30s query cache
  },
});
```

### SQLAlchemy (Python)
```python
from sqlalchemy.orm import DeclarativeBase, Mapped, mapped_column, relationship
from sqlalchemy import String, ForeignKey, Table, Column
from datetime import datetime
from typing import List
class Base(DeclarativeBase):
    pass
# Association table
user_roles = Table(
    "user_roles",
    Base.metadata,
    Column("user_id", ForeignKey("users.id"), primary_key=True),
    Column("role_id", ForeignKey("roles.id"), primary_key=True),
)
class User(Base):
    __tablename__ = "users"
    id: Mapped[str] = mapped_column(String(36), primary_key=True)
    email: Mapped[str] = mapped_column(String(255), unique=True, index=True)
    name: Mapped[str] = mapped_column(String(100))
    created_at: Mapped[datetime] = mapped_column(default=datetime.utcnow)
    profile: Mapped["Profile"] = relationship(back_populates="user")
    roles: Mapped[List["Role"]] = relationship(secondary=user_roles)
```

## Query Optimization

### N+1 Prevention
```typescript
// ❌ N+1 Problem
const users = await userRepo.find();
for (const user of users) {
  console.log(user.profile.bio);  // Query per user!
}
// ✅ Eager Loading (TypeORM)
const users = await userRepo.find({
  relations: ['profile', 'roles', 'roles.permissions'],
});
// ✅ DataLoader (GraphQL)
const profileLoader = new DataLoader(async (userIds) => {
  const profiles = await profileRepo.findByIds(userIds);
  return userIds.map(id => profiles.find(p => p.userId === id));
});
// Usage: profileLoader.load(user.id) — batched automatically
```

### Projection (Read Models)
```typescript
// Don't select * when you only need 3 columns
const userList = await userRepo
  .createQueryBuilder('u')
  .select(['u.id', 'u.name', 'u.email'])
  .where('u.isActive = :active', { active: true })
  .orderBy('u.name', 'ASC')
  .skip(0)
  .take(50)
  .getRawMany();
```

## Unit of Work Pattern

```typescript
class UnitOfWork {
  private changedEntities: Set<Entity> = new Set();
  registerChanged(entity: Entity) {
    this.changedEntities.add(entity);
  }
  async commit(): Promise<void> {
    const transaction = await db.beginTransaction();
    try {
      for (const entity of this.changedEntities) {
        await this.getRepository(entity.constructor).save(entity);
      }
      await transaction.commit();
      await this.invalidateCache();
      this.changedEntities.clear();
    } catch (error) {
      await transaction.rollback();
      throw error;
    }
  }
}
```

## Best Practices

| Do | Don't |
|----|-------|
| Repository interface in domain | ORM entities leaked to domain |
| Lazy load by default, eager when profiling shows N+1 | Eager everything |
| Cache at repository level | Cache at controller level |
| Use connection pooling | Create connection per request |
| Retry transient failures | Fail immediately on timeout |
| Use migrations for schema changes | `synchronize: true` in prod |
| Projection for read queries | `SELECT *` for lists |
