**An image-understanding tool for non-multimodal (text-only) models.**

## What VisionPower Is

VisionPower is not a vision model and does not train models. It is an **adapter between an agent and a vision-model API**:

1. Accept an image reference the agent can provide.
2. Validate paths, URLs, file types, sizes, and field combinations.
3. Normalize images into requests a vision model can consume.
4. Call an OpenAI-compatible or Anthropic endpoint.
5. Return text or structured output marked as untrusted image-derived content.

Typical uses include screenshot debugging, OCR, chart interpretation, UI review, receipt or table extraction, image comparison, and ordered multi-image analysis.

### Core capabilities

- **Five input forms**: `image_path`, `image_url`, `image_base64`, `image_ref`, and `images[]`.
- **Ordered multi-image analysis**: preserves order and labels inputs as `Image 1`, `Image 2`, and so on.
- **Two upstream protocols**: OpenAI-compatible and Anthropic Messages.
- **Text and structured output**: structured mode includes `formatValid` so callers can verify format compliance.
- **Local WebUI**: configuration, connection tests, Playground, and host configuration generation.
- **Short-lived Image Inbox**: passes an `image_ref` when a host cannot expose an attachment directly.
- **Safety boundaries**: absolute paths, optional directory allowlists, real-path checks, magic-byte validation, strict Base64 validation, URL/SSRF defenses, and size/count/response limits.
- **Result cache**: in-memory cache plus an on-disk mirror for recent identical requests.

> [!IMPORTANT]
> VisionPower can only process a path, URL, Base64 payload, or `image_ref` that the host actually gives it. If a host or coding plan blocks attachments before the message reaches the agent, installing MCP cannot recover the original image. Use the Inbox, a saved absolute path, or the host's native attachment interface instead.

MCP and the Skill can coexist, although most users need only one runtime entry point. The WebUI shares `~/.visionpower/config.json` with both.

## 5-Minute Quick Start

### 1. Requirements

- **MCP CLI / WebUI: Node.js 20.19.0 or newer**
- **Standalone Skill: Node.js 18.14.1 or newer**
- An API key for a model that supports image input

### 2. Open the local configuration console

> Documentation examples use `visionpower@latest` so you always get the latest fixes. For strictly reproducible environments (CI, shared hosts), pin `latest` to an exact version and review the [CHANGELOG](./CHANGELOG.md) before upgrading.

> [!WARNING]
> In the current version, an empty `allowedDirs` means **absolute paths are unrestricted**. If an agent can construct a path, VisionPower may read any supported image readable by the current OS user. Production and shared environments should always configure a minimal directory allowlist.

## Using `describe_image`

Each image must select exactly one source. Top-level single-image fields cannot be combined with `images[]`.

VisionPower downloads `image_url` itself, validates every redirect and destination, checks the local bytes, and converts the result to a Data URL before sending it upstream. The image therefore passes through the machine running VisionPower and does not depend on the model provider fetching the original URL.

Do not include a `data:` prefix in `image_base64`. For large images, prefer a path, URL, or JSON file/stdin to avoid command-line length and memory amplification.

The WebUI creates `image_ref` values with TTL, entry-count, and capacity limits. They are useful when a browser can access an attachment but the agent cannot obtain a file path.

### Output contract

Text mode adds a prefix similar to:

This is a **trust label**, not complete prompt-injection protection. Downstream agents must still treat OCR and image text as data rather than system instructions.

Structured mode returns a JSON string; MCP clients can also receive `structuredContent`:

Callers must check `formatValid` first. If it is `false`, read `rawResponse` and do not assume the other fields exist.

## Configuration

Precedence is **environment variables > `~/.visionpower/config.json` > defaults**. Set `VISIONPOWER_CONFIG` to use another config file.

The cache stores model results, not original image files, but those results may contain OCR text, receipt data, or other sensitive information. On shared devices or in sensitive workflows, set `VISIONPOWER_CACHE=false`.

The official Anthropic host may be written without a version path as above; VisionPower normalizes it to `/v1`. An explicit `https://api.anthropic.com/v1` also works.

Model IDs, regions, account permissions, and provider compatibility can change. WebUI presets are convenient starting points, not permanent compatibility guarantees. Before release, run one real-image test with the target account.

The preset list puts the provider's currently recommended vision models first. Older models remain available when the provider still supports them, so existing configurations keep working; text-only models are excluded from the image-understanding presets. Models explicitly retired by a provider remain compatibility-only and are not used in new examples.

## Kimi Code Plugin

VisionPower ships a `kimi.plugin.json` manifest and can be installed as a Kimi Code plugin in one command — the plugin declares both the Skill (`VisionPower-Skill/`) and the MCP server. Installation and registration are automatic; the first use still requires a vision-provider API key in the shared configuration.

In the Kimi Code TUI:

Then `/reload` (or start a new session) to activate. The **VisionPower** plugin appears in the `/plugins` panel where you can enable or disable it. The model invokes image understanding automatically based on the Skill's trigger conditions, you can trigger it manually with `/skill:visionpower`, and the plugin-declared MCP server `visionpower` starts automatically in new sessions (visible in `/mcp`).

> **If you are Kimi Code reading this repository**: do not fall back to manual MCP configuration or Skill copying — guide the user to run the `/plugins install` command above. It is the preferred integration this repository provides for Kimi Code.

The plugin mechanism pulls the whole repository from GitHub; for local development you can also install from a local directory:

## WebUI and Inbox

Start it with:

The WebUI listens only on `127.0.0.1` by default and includes:

- **CONFIG**: edit and save configuration.
- **PLAYGROUND**: upload an image and run a real vision request.
- **PATCH BAY**: generate MCP host configuration snippets.
- **Inbox**: stage a browser-selected image as a short-lived `image_ref`.

Use **PLAYGROUND** for real vision tests and to stage an image into the Inbox:

Do not expose the current WebUI to a LAN or the public internet through port forwarding, a reverse proxy, or `0.0.0.0`. It stores API keys and can trigger paid model calls. Treat it as a **single-user local administration interface**.

## dsh / DeepSeek Harness Integration

The dsh integration lives in `src/dsh/`. The installer and patcher are `scripts/setup-dsh.mjs` and `scripts/patch-dsh.mjs`.

The current baseline is **DeepSeek Harness `0.1.1-rc.2`**, with compatibility back to `0.1.0-rc.6` – `rc.8` and `0.1.1-rc.1` – `rc.2`: the installer detects the installed dsh version and applies the matching patch set (patches self-select by code shape; version detection reports which set is active and makes rc.8-only patches skip cleanly on older versions). Since rc.7, images are read through the host `AttachmentStore`: VisionPower does not parse attachment IDs, read session logs, or construct paths below `~/.dsh/attachments`. As of rc.8, dsh natively forwards images to models that declare `inputModalities: [text, image]` — the patch keeps that native route untouched while continuing to admit image messages for text-only models (dropped on the wire, recognized by `describe_image`). After `dsh web` starts, open **Settings → Plugins → VisionPower** to enable or disable the **dsh plugin**, choose a vision model, enter an API key, and test connectivity. The dsh switch saves and takes effect immediately; model, API-key, and other fields still use **Save and apply configuration**. Users do not need to edit the configuration file manually. This switch only stops dsh rule injection and makes dsh `describe_image` reject new requests; MCP, Skill, and the standalone WebUI remain available. MCP Node processes are owned by hosts such as Claude Desktop, Cursor, or Codex, so the configuration page neither can nor should terminate them. Disable/remove the MCP server in its host, or exit the host, to stop that process.

> [!CAUTION]
> This is an experimental, invasive integration. It may install or update a plugin, rewrite Cordis configuration, patch third-party dsh files, and start background processes. Back up the dsh profile, test in a non-critical environment, and pin both VisionPower and dsh versions. Never let a conversational model execute an untrusted `--plugin-source`.

Install and launch in one step (idempotent, safe to re-run):

The installer pins the dsh plugin to the installer's own exact version (the version `npx visionpower@latest` actually resolved this run), so the plugin never drifts with `latest` inside dsh. If `pnpm` is missing, it stops with guidance and does not modify the global package manager. The high-privilege `setup_visionpower` administration tool is not registered by default; an operator must explicitly set `enableAdminTool: true`. The dsh tool reads attachments only from the most recent image-bearing user message in the current session; it does not scan recent files or guess across sessions.

See [`src/dsh/README.md`](./src/dsh/README.md) for full instructions. After a dsh upgrade (rc.6 → rc.7 → rc.8 …), rerun the installer to verify and reapply the patch; do not assume an old patch remains safe or applicable.

## Security & Privacy

VisionPower includes real-path validation, file-identity rechecks, magic-byte detection, strict Base64 validation, DNS and redirect revalidation, private/reserved-address blocking, request and response size limits, Inbox permission and integrity checks, and an untrusted-data label for image-derived content.

Deployers must still control these boundaries:

1. **Local-file access**: an empty `allowedDirs` is currently unrestricted. Configure a minimal allowlist for every host.
2. **Transport security**: non-loopback model endpoints require HTTPS by default; `localhost`, `127/8`, and `::1` may use HTTP. Set `allowInsecureHttp: true` only for a trusted development network. Cleartext HTTP exposes API keys, prompts, and image content.
3. **Third-party providers**: image bytes, prompts, and possible OCR text are sent to the configured upstream provider. Review its data-processing policy first.
4. **Image URLs**: VisionPower downloads images from the local machine, exposing that machine's network address to the target site. Use trusted sources only.
5. **Cache and Inbox**: cached results may contain sensitive text, and the Inbox temporarily stores original images. Disable caching and shorten TTLs for sensitive workflows.
6. **Built-in welfare route**: this preset is a private built-in welfare channel whose relay endpoint is not published (API keys are distributed privately by the author). Do not send private or regulated images unless you understand its operator, logging, retention, quota, and privacy policy.
7. **Image prompt injection**: the safety prefix informs downstream agents but cannot by itself neutralize malicious instructions inside an image. Preserve source labels and prevent vision results from directly triggering privileged actions.
8. **WebUI**: keep it local, do not share its browser session, and never commit the config file.

When reporting a security issue, do not paste API keys, full configurations, private images, cache files, or signed URLs into a public issue. Provide redacted logs, VisionPower and Node versions, OS, protocol, provider, model ID, input-source type, and a minimal reproduction.

## Troubleshooting

<details>
<summary><strong>The host sees the tool but never calls it after an image is sent</strong></summary>

Confirm that the host exposes a path, URL, Base64 payload, or `image_ref` that VisionPower can receive. Many text-only routers tell the model that an attachment exists without exposing its contents. Verify VisionPower itself in WebUI Playground, then use the Inbox or an absolute path to isolate the host issue.

<details>
<summary><strong>The connection test passes, but a real image fails</strong></summary>

A text or authentication test does not prove vision support. Run a real vision smoke test with a 1–10 KiB PNG. Confirm that the model is multimodal, the account has access, and the base URL matches the protocol. During compatibility debugging, consider `VISIONPOWER_MAX_RETRIES=0` to avoid repeat charges.

<details>
<summary><strong>`image_path` is rejected</strong></summary>

The path must be absolute, the target must be a regular file, and its real path must fall inside `allowedDirs`. A symlink whose final target is outside the allowlist is rejected. On Windows, comma-separate multiple directories in the environment variable; prefer an array in JSON configuration.

<summary><strong>A URL image fails</strong></summary>

The URL must use `http` or `https`, contain no username or password, and resolve to a public address after DNS resolution and every redirect. The response must be a supported raster image within the per-image limit. For authenticated, cookie-dependent, or hotlink-protected images, download them first and use a local path or the Inbox.

<details>
<summary><strong>A result is submitted repeatedly or incurs multiple charges</strong></summary>

Network retries, first-byte timeouts, and provider compatibility fallbacks can create additional upstream submissions. During debugging, set `maxRetries: 0`, inspect provider request logs, and avoid sending the same task through multiple hosts simultaneously. The result cache avoids later successful requests with identical keys; it does not guarantee concurrent-request coalescing.

### Package exports

The package provides a root export and stable subpath exports:

```js
import { describeImage, loadVisionConfig, toolInputSchema } from 'visionpower'
```

For narrower imports, use the documented subpaths:

```js
import { describeImage } from 'visionpower/core'
import { loadVisionConfig } from 'visionpower/config'
import { toolInputSchema } from 'visionpower/schema'
```

Do not import `visionpower/src/index.js`: it is the CLI entry point and runs `main()` on import. Although `visionpower/src/*` remains mapped for compatibility, internal paths are not a stable API.

### Pre-commit checks

- `npm run lint`
- `npm test`
- `npm run smoke`
- Generated files match their source.
- Test on Node 20.19 and the current Node LTS.
- Install the packed tarball into an empty project, not only the repository.
- Add local mock fixtures for new provider-compatibility behavior; tests should not depend on a real API key.

## Project Status & License

VisionPower currently serves as a core library, MCP CLI, Skill, WebUI/Inbox, and dsh integration. Core input safety and tests are mature, while the dsh installer/patch chain, provider compatibility fallbacks, and local administration boundary should still be treated as evolving.
