## Protocol Selection

## Connection Lifecycle

## Reconnection Strategy (CRITICAL)

## Heartbeat / Keep-Alive

- Server sends ping every 25-30 seconds
- Client must respond with pong within 10 seconds
- If no pong received, server closes connection
- Client-side: detect missing pings, trigger reconnect
- Behind proxies: keep interval < proxy timeout (usually 60s)

## Scaling WebSocket Servers

### Sticky Sessions (Required)
- Load balancer must route same client to same server
- Use IP hash, cookie, or connection ID for affinity
- Without sticky sessions: handshake on server A, messages on server B = failure

### Pub/Sub Adapter (Multi-Node)
- Redis adapter for Socket.io (socket.io-redis)
- Each node subscribes to Redis pub/sub
- Broadcast goes to Redis, Redis fans out to all nodes
- Room state synced via Redis

### Connection Limits
- Track connections per node (file descriptor limits)
- Horizontal scale: add nodes when approaching 10K connections
- Use connection draining for graceful shutdown

## Message Patterns

## Security Checklist

- [ ] Authenticate on handshake (JWT in query param or first message)
- [ ] Validate origin header (prevent CSWSH - Cross-Site WebSocket Hijacking)
- [ ] Rate limit messages per connection (100 msg/s max)
- [ ] Validate and sanitize all incoming messages
- [ ] Use WSS (TLS) in production, never plain WS
- [ ] Implement per-user connection limits (max 5 tabs)
- [ ] Set max message size (1MB default, reject larger)
- [ ] Authorization check per room/channel join
