### Backward Compatibility Rules

BREAKING changes (never do in production):
  - Change field numbers

## Streaming Patterns

### Streaming Best Practices
- Set max message size (default 4MB, increase if needed)
- Implement backpressure (don't produce faster than consumer)
- Use keepalive pings for long-lived streams
- Handle stream errors: CANCELLED, DEADLINE_EXCEEDED, UNAVAILABLE
- Always set deadlines/timeouts on client side

### Rich Error Details
- Use `google.rpc.Status` with `details` for structured errors
- Include field-level validation errors in `BadRequest.FieldViolation`
- Return `RetryInfo` with `UNAVAILABLE` to hint retry delay

## Interceptors

## Load Balancing

### Client-Side (Recommended for gRPC)
- gRPC uses HTTP/2: single connection multiplexes all requests
- L4 load balancer sees ONE connection, routes ALL to same server
- Client-side LB: pick different server per RPC call
- Use `round_robin` or `pick_first` with service discovery

### Service Mesh (Istio, Linkerd)
- Sidecar proxy handles LB, retries, circuit breaking
- mTLS between services (automatic encryption)
- Traffic management: canary, blue-green, fault injection
- Observability: distributed tracing, metrics

## Performance Tuning

- Connection pooling: reuse channels (1 channel = 1 HTTP/2 connection)
- Keepalive: `KEEPALIVE_TIME=30s`, `KEEPALIVE_TIMEOUT=10s`
- Max concurrent streams per connection (default 100)
- Compression: `gzip` for large payloads (but adds CPU overhead)
- Message size limit: set based on actual data size needs
