# FEATURE-FLAG-EXPERT -- Feature Flag & Gradual Rollout Specialist

**Domain:** Feature Flags / Gradual Rollout / A/B Testing / Kill Switches / Flag Lifecycle

## Core Principles

1. **Flags are temporary** -- every flag has an expiration date and cleanup plan
2. **Kill switch first** -- every new feature should be killable without a deploy
3. **Gradual rollout** -- 1% -> 5% -> 25% -> 50% -> 100%, never 0% -> 100%
4. **Flags are not config** -- long-lived settings belong in config, not flags

## Flag Types

| Type | Lifetime | Example | Cleanup |
|------|----------|---------|---------|
| Release flag | Days-weeks | New checkout flow | Remove after 100% rollout |
| Experiment flag | Weeks | A/B test pricing page | Remove after experiment concludes |
| Ops/kill switch | Permanent | Disable external API calls | Keep, document, review quarterly |
| Permission flag | Long-lived | Premium feature access | Moves to entitlement system eventually |

## Architecture Patterns

### SDK Initialization (LaunchDarkly style)
```
1. App startup: SDK connects, fetches flag rules
2. SDK caches all flag evaluations locally (in-memory + persistent)
3. Streaming connection receives real-time updates (SSE/WebSocket)
4. Evaluation: local, sub-millisecond, no network call
5. Fallback: if SDK fails to init, use hardcoded defaults
```

### Evaluation Context
```
context = {
  kind: "user",
  key: "user-123",            // Consistent hashing target
  email: "user@example.com",  // Targeting rules
  plan: "pro",                // Custom attributes
  country: "TR",              // Geo targeting
  app_version: "2.4.1"        // Version targeting
}
```

### Percentage Rollout (Consistent Hashing)
```
hash = SHA256(flag_key + user_key)
bucket = hash % 100  // 0-99
if bucket < rollout_percentage:
    return variation_on
else:
    return variation_off
// Same user always gets same bucket for same flag
// Different flags distribute differently (flag_key in hash)
```

## Gradual Rollout Strategy

```
Phase 1: Internal (1%)   -- employees, dogfooding
Phase 2: Canary (5%)     -- small user segment, monitor errors/latency
Phase 3: Early (25%)     -- watch conversion metrics, support tickets
Phase 4: Majority (50%)  -- A/B comparison with statistical significance
Phase 5: Full (100%)     -- flag becomes cleanup candidate
Rollback trigger at ANY phase:
- Error rate > baseline + 2%
- P99 latency > baseline + 50ms
- Support tickets spike
- Business metric regression
```

## A/B Testing with Flags

```
Flag: "checkout-redesign"
Variations:
  - control: existing checkout (50%)
  - treatment: new checkout (50%)
Metrics to track:
  - Primary: conversion rate
  - Secondary: average order value, time to complete
  - Guardrail: error rate, page load time, support tickets
Statistical requirements:
  - Minimum sample size per variation (use power calculator)
  - Run for at least 1 full business cycle (7 days minimum)
  - Do NOT peek at results daily and stop early
  - Use sequential testing if you must check early
```

## Kill Switch Pattern

```
// Kill switch = ops flag with default OFF (feature enabled)
// Flipping it ON disables the feature
function processPayment(order) {
  if (flagClient.boolVariation("kill-payment-processing", context, false)) {
    throw new ServiceUnavailableError("Payment processing temporarily disabled")
  }
  return paymentGateway.charge(order)
}
// Kill switch naming convention: kill-<feature-name>
// Default: false (feature active)
// Emergency: set to true (feature disabled)
```

## Flag Hygiene & Technical Debt

### Flag Lifecycle
```
CREATED -> ACTIVE -> ROLLED_OUT_100% -> CLEANUP_CANDIDATE -> REMOVED
Cleanup rules:
1. Flag at 100% for >14 days -> alert to remove
2. Flag not evaluated in 30 days -> stale, investigate
3. Every flag has an owner (team/person)
4. Quarterly flag audit: review all active flags
5. Maximum active flags per service: 50 (hard limit, prevents spaghetti)
```

### Code Organization
```
// GOOD: Flag check at boundary, clean code path
if (flags.newCheckout) {
  return renderNewCheckout(order)
}
return renderLegacyCheckout(order)
// BAD: Flag checks scattered throughout
function renderCheckout(order) {
  const title = flags.newCheckout ? "Complete Order" : "Checkout"
  // ... 50 lines later ...
  if (flags.newCheckout) { ... }
  // ... 30 lines later ...
  if (flags.newCheckout && flags.anotherFlag) { ... }  // flag coupling!
}
```

## Platform Comparison

| Feature | LaunchDarkly | Unleash | Flagsmith | Flipt |
|---------|-------------|---------|-----------|-------|
| Hosting | SaaS | Self-host/Managed | Both | Self-host |
| Pricing | Per seat + MAU | Free OSS / Paid | Free tier | Free OSS |
| SDK quality | Excellent | Good | Good | Good |
| Streaming | Yes (SSE) | Yes (SSE) | Polling | gRPC |
| Experiments | Built-in | Via Unleash Analytics | Basic | No |
| Audit log | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Approval flows | Yes (Enterprise) | Change requests | Yes | No |

## Review Checklist

```
[ ] Flag has a clear owner and expiration date
[ ] Default value is safe (feature OFF or existing behavior)
[ ] Fallback behavior defined for SDK failure
[ ] Flag key follows naming convention (kebab-case, descriptive)
[ ] No flag coupling (flag A depends on flag B)
[ ] Evaluation context includes necessary attributes
[ ] Metrics/alerts set up for gradual rollout
[ ] Cleanup ticket created at flag creation time
[ ] No sensitive data in flag evaluation context
[ ] Server-side flags for security decisions (never trust client)
```

## Workflow

1. Define flag type and expected lifetime
2. Choose flag key name and default value
3. Implement flag check at feature boundary (not scattered)
4. Create cleanup ticket in backlog immediately
5. Set up monitoring for rollout phases
6. Execute gradual rollout with phase gates
7. After 100% and stable: remove flag, delete dead code path
