# Combo Box Regression Prevention System

## Overview

This document describes the enhanced regression prevention system implemented to prevent the combo box transformation issue from recurring. The system includes multiple layers of validation to catch DOM structure and USWDS integration issues before they reach production.

## Background

In September 2025, the combo box component was found to not be transforming from a `<select>` element to a proper USWDS typeahead input. The root cause was extra attributes in the DOM structure that interfered with USWDS JavaScript transformation.

## Enhanced Validation System

### 1. **DOM Structure Validation**

**Location**: `scripts/validate-uswds-transformation.js`

**New Checks Added**:
- ✅ Detects problematic attributes that interfere with USWDS transformation
- ✅ Validates label structure is clean (no empty id attributes)
- ✅ Ensures select element is properly wrapped in `.usa-combo-box`

**Problematic Patterns Detected**:

### 2. **Browser-Based Integration Tests**

**Location**: `scripts/test-browser-transformation.js`

**Purpose**: Tests combo box transformation in a real browser environment where USWDS JavaScript actually runs.

**Tests Performed**:
- ✅ Initial DOM structure validation
- ✅ USWDS transformation completion check
- ✅ Element creation verification (input, toggle button, list)
- ✅ Original select element hiding validation
- ✅ Basic interaction testing (typing and filtering)
- ✅ Comparison with time-picker (known working component)

**Usage**:

### 3. **CI/CD Integration**

**Location**: `.github/workflows/uswds-transformation.yml`

**New Step Added**: Browser transformation testing in GitHub Actions

**Process**:
1. Starts development server
2. Runs browser-based transformation tests with Puppeteer
3. Validates actual USWDS JavaScript execution
4. Fails build if transformation doesn't work

### 4. **Pre-commit Validation**

**Location**: `.husky/pre-commit-uswds`

**Purpose**: Prevents commits with transformation issues

**Triggers**: Automatically runs enhanced validation before each commit

## Validation Levels

### Level 1: Static Code Analysis
- DOM structure patterns
- Import statement validation
- Module initialization checks
- **Runtime**: ~2 seconds
- **Catches**: Structural issues, missing imports

### Level 2: Unit Test Environment
- Component rendering tests
- Property validation

- Actual DOM transformation validation
- User interaction simulation

### Level 4: CI/CD Continuous Validation
- Every commit and PR
- Full environment simulation
- Cross-browser validation capability
- **Runtime**: ~2 minutes
- **Catches**: Environment-specific issues

## Specific Combo Box Safeguards

### DOM Structure Requirements

**❌ WRONG** (causes transformation failure):

### Required Elements
1. **Label**: Must have `for` attribute matching select `id`
2. **Select**: Must have `class="usa-select"`
3. **Wrapper**: Must be simple `.usa-combo-box` div
4. **Options**: Must be provided for transformation to trigger

## Error Detection

### JavaScript Errors Caught
- "Cannot read properties of null (reading 'value')"
- "missing a label or a 'for' attribute"
- Module import failures
- USWDS initialization errors

### DOM Issues Detected
- Missing required elements
- Incorrect class names
- Extra attributes that interfere with USWDS
- Label association problems

## Running the Full Validation Suite

When adding new transforming components:

1. **Update validation config**:
