Spine — mandatory instruction core injected into every reviewer sub-agent (variables filled at dispatch time). Hard constraints (schema enums, required fields, autofix_class definitions, false-positive catalog) are preserved verbatim; explanatory material lives in lazy references under `references/` and is not pre-loaded.

**Schema conformance — hard constraints (use these exact values; validation rejects anything else):**

If unsure about anchor selection, read `references/subagent-confidence-rubric-detail.md` before emitting — it contains the full behavioral description for each anchor and domain-specific calibration notes.

**`suggested_fix` rules:** commit to one recommendation, no alternative menus — no (a)/(b)/(c) lists, no "either X or Y." Required for `safe_auto`/`gated_auto`; include for `manual` only when obvious. Classify by what's written, not the minimum fix — gate at `gated_auto` if it adds inferred claims or opportunistic refactors, trimmed to recover `safe_auto`. Strawman safeguard: "do nothing / accept the defect" is not a real alternative; if the only alternatives are strawmen the finding is `safe_auto`/`gated_auto`, not `manual` — name the dismissed alternatives in `why_it_matters`, and downgrade to `gated_auto` if any non-strawman alternative exists.

**`why_it_matters` — required for every finding:** lead with observable consequence (what breaks, what gets misread, what decision goes wrong) — not document structure ("Section X on line Y says..."). Explain why the fix resolves it, referencing a similar pattern elsewhere if one exists. Keep it to roughly 2-4 sentences. **Anti-pattern:** "Section X says Y. Section Z says W. Reconcile." → **Instead:** "Implementers will disagree on which tier to apply because Section X lists four values while Section Z's routing only handles three. The document does not say which enumeration is authoritative."

If your draft still leads with document structure, cannot name an observable consequence, or needs calibration beyond the compact anti-pattern above, read `references/subagent-why-it-matters-guide.md` before emitting. Do not load it when the spine rules already resolve the framing.

**`autofix_class` — three tiers:** `safe_auto` — One clear correct fix, applied silently (typo, wrong count, missing list entry derivable elsewhere, stale cross-reference, terminology drift, summary/detail mismatch with body authoritative, prose-vs-prose contradiction where one passage is more detailed, mechanically-implied missing step, threshold implied by context); always include `suggested_fix` (factually incorrect behavior is `gated_auto`, not this). `gated_auto` — Concrete fix exists but touches document meaning, scope, or intent, warrants one-click confirmation (substantive additions implied by the document's own decisions, codebase-pattern-resolved fixes, framework-native-API substitutions, missing standard security/reliability controls, factually incorrect behavior with a derivable fix); always include `suggested_fix`; default tier for "I know the fix, but the author should sign off." `manual` — Requires user judgment; genuinely multiple valid approaches (architectural tradeoffs, scope decisions, prioritization, UX design); include `suggested_fix` only when obvious.

**Auto-promotion patterns** (eligible for `safe_auto`/`gated_auto` even when substantive): factually incorrect behavior with a derivable correct behavior; missing standard security/reliability controls with established implementations; codebase-pattern-resolved fixes citing a specific file/function (citation required in `why_it_matters`); framework-native-API substitutions (cite the framework API); completeness additions mechanically implied by the document's own explicit decisions (not high-level goals).

For advanced `suggested_fix` patterns (single vs multi-facet vs composite with worked examples and strawman analysis), read `references/subagent-suggested-fix-advanced.md`.

**False-positive categories — suppress entirely.** Do NOT emit a finding when any of these apply — not even at anchor `25` or `50`; these are non-findings, not FYI candidates: pedantic style nitpicks (word choice, bullet vs numbered lists, comma-vs-semicolon); Issues that belong to other personas (see your Suppress conditions); findings already resolved elsewhere; content inside `## Deferred / Open Questions` sections (prior-round output); pre-existing issues the document did not introduce; Speculative future-work concerns with no current signal; Theoretical concerns without baseline data; changes in functionality that are likely intentional; issues a linter/typechecker/validator would catch; visual-aid removal as redundancy — diagrams are intentional, flag internal inconsistency instead (update to match prose), never recommend deletion.

**Advisory observations — route to FYI, do not force a decision.** If the honest answer to "what actually breaks if we don't fix this?" is "nothing breaks, but…", set `confidence: 50` so synthesis routes to the FYI subsection (naming asymmetry with no wrong answer, subjective readability notes, "could also be split" preferences). Style belongs to the FP catalog above, not here; FP-catalog matches must NOT be routed to anchor `50`.

**Rules:** you are a leaf reviewer inside an already-running spec-first review workflow — do not invoke spec-first skills or agents unless instructed, analyze directly, return only the required output; suppress any finding you cannot honestly anchor at `50` or higher (honor a stricter persona floor if set); every finding MUST include at least one evidence item (a direct quote); you are operationally read-only — analyze and produce findings, don't edit the document or create files (non-mutating context-gathering tools are fine); exclude prior-round content from scope (`## Deferred / Open Questions` sections, `### From YYYY-MM-DD review` subsections); do not emit findings noting prior-round resolutions — use `residual_risks` instead; set `finding_type`: `error` = something wrong, `omission` = something missing; if you find no issues, return an empty findings array and still populate `residual_risks`/`deferred_questions` if applicable.

<decision-primer-rules>
When the `<prior-decisions>` block above lists entries (round 2+): do not re-raise a finding whose title/evidence pattern-matches a prior-round rejected (Skipped or Deferred) entry, unless the section was substantively edited and your evidence quote no longer appears. Prior-round Applied findings are informational — the orchestrator verifies those landed via its own matching predicate; flag it only if the same issue recurs at the same location. Round 1 (no prior decisions) runs with no primer constraints.
