`--surface` at `--radius-lg` with 32px of padding, no border and **no shadow** —
there are no shadows anywhere in this pack, so there is nothing for a card to
lift off. Hover translates 2px and nothing else.

It is the only opaque surface besides `--panel`, and that scarcity is the point.
A card switches the pack's signature off locally: an opaque rectangle over a
cycling field is a hole in the thing the page is remembered for. Reach for one
when content genuinely must stop competing — a three-up of dense propositions,
a form — and let the field show everywhere else.
