# Research Swarm v1.1.0 - Implementation Summary

**Date**: November 4, 2025
**Version**: 1.1.0 (Swarm-by-Default)
**Status**: ✅ Complete & Ready for Release

## 🎯 Mission Accomplished

### User Feedback Addressed

**Original Issue**: "it's called research swarm, it should use a swarm approach"

**Problem**: Package named "research-swarm" but default behavior was single-agent execution.

**Solution**: Redesigned architecture so the default `research` command now uses multi-agent swarm with automatic task decomposition.

## 🔄 Migration Path

### v1.0.1 → v1.1.0 (Backward Compatible)

**No changes required** for existing users!

**Default behavior change**:
```bash
# v1.0.1 (single agent)
research-swarm research researcher "task"
  → Spawned 1 agent
# v1.1.0 (swarm)
research-swarm research researcher "task"
  → Spawns 5 agents (adaptive)
```

**Preserve v1.0.1 behavior**:
```bash
research-swarm research researcher "task" --single-agent
```

### Cost Optimization

**Budget-conscious users**:
```bash
# Minimal swarm (3 agents)
research-swarm research researcher "task" --swarm-size 3
# Single-agent (lowest cost)
research-swarm research researcher "task" --single-agent
```

### Key Design Decisions

1. **Adaptive Sizing**
   - Depth 1-3: 3 agents (Explorer, Depth, Synthesizer)
   - Depth 4-6: 5 agents (+ Verifier, Trend Analyst)
   - Depth 7-10: 7 agents (+ Domain Expert, Critic)

2. **Priority Scheduling**
   - P1: Research agents (run in parallel)
   - P2: Verification agents (run after research)
   - P3: Synthesis agent (runs last, combines all)

3. **Concurrency Control**
   - Max 4 agents concurrent (configurable)
   - Prevents resource exhaustion
   - Optimal for most systems

4. **Backward Compatibility**
   - `--single-agent` flag preserves v1.0.1 behavior
   - No breaking changes to API
   - Gradual migration path

---

## 💡 Key Innovations

### 1. Multi-Perspective Analysis
- **Problem**: Single-agent has blind spots
- **Solution**: 3-7 agents with different perspectives
- **Benefit**: More comprehensive research

### 2. Built-in Verification
- **Problem**: No automatic fact-checking in v1.0.1
- **Solution**: Dedicated Verifier and Critic agents
- **Benefit**: Higher quality, fewer hallucinations

### 3. Automatic Synthesis
- **Problem**: User had to manually combine findings
- **Solution**: Synthesizer agent combines all perspectives
- **Benefit**: Unified report, conflict resolution

### 4. Adaptive Intelligence
- **Problem**: Same approach for all tasks (wasteful)
- **Solution**: Adaptive sizing based on complexity
- **Benefit**: Optimize cost vs quality trade-off
