<step n="1" name="Catalyst Calendar Construction (Loop-Until-Dry)">Build a forward-looking catalyst calendar covering 3-12 months. Use a **loop-until-dry** search pattern — do not stop after one search pass. The long tail of binary events (mid-cycle product updates, regulatory milestones, secondary FDA pathways, court-ordered settlements, etc.) hides in subsequent searches once obvious catalysts are exhausted.

Categorize events:
- **Earnings (E)**: Earnings report dates, guidance updates, analyst days
- **Regulatory (R)**: FDA PDUFA dates, FTC/DOJ decisions, EU Commission rulings, CFIUS reviews
- **Product (P)**: Product launches, clinical trial readouts, phase transitions, key customer wins
- **Corporate (C)**: Shareholder meetings, proxy votes, spin-offs, M&A close, activist deadlines
- **Macro (M)**: FOMC meetings, elections, trade policy deadlines, OPEC+ meetings

**Loop protocol** (mandatory):
1. Initialize `catalysts = []`, `dry_rounds = 0`.
2. While `dry_rounds < 2`:
   a. Run a fresh web search for upcoming catalysts. Phrase the query to EXCLUDE catalysts you already have — append `-"<title1>" -"<title2>" ...` for the top items in `catalysts`.
   b. Vary the search angle each round: round 1 = company name + "catalyst calendar", round 2 = company name + "upcoming events" + sector keyword, round 3 = company name + "guidance" + "milestone", round 4+ = SEC 8-K filings, IR page, conference calendars, regulatory dockets.
   c. Extract any catalyst NOT already in `catalysts`.
   d. If the round added zero new catalysts: `dry_rounds += 1`. Otherwise: `dry_rounds = 0` and append the new finds.
   e. Cap at 6 rounds total to bound wall-clock.
3. Exit when `dry_rounds == 2` (two consecutive empty rounds) OR round cap reached.

For each catalyst, record: date (or window), event type, expected impact magnitude (1-5), direction (positive/negative/binary), confidence in timing, **discovery round** (which loop iteration surfaced it — round 1 = obvious, rounds 3+ = long-tail).

For each catalyst, record: date (or window), event type, expected impact magnitude (1-5), direction (positive/negative/binary), and confidence in timing.

**(P0.4 wiring)** If `{company_dir}/transcript_nlp.json` exists (produced by alt-data-analyst Stage 13), load it and use the `guidance.guidance_shift` field (raised|reaffirmed|lowered|withdrawn|unclear) to bias the *direction* and *expected impact magnitude* of the NEXT earnings catalyst. Heuristic: `raised` → bias positive (+1 magnitude), `reaffirmed` → neutral, `lowered` → bias negative (−1 magnitude), `withdrawn` → high binary uncertainty (impact 5, direction binary). Cite the source in the calendar entry: "Forward bias from prior-quarter guidance shift: {value}".</step>

<step n="2" name="Event-Driven Probability Assessment">For each major catalyst:
- **Historical frequency**: How often does this type of event produce the expected outcome? (e.g., FDA Phase 3 success rate for this therapeutic area = X%)
- **Company-specific track record**: How has this management historically performed on similar events? (e.g., this company has beaten earnings estimates 8 of last 10 quarters)
- **Leading indicators**: What signals can we track ahead of the event? (e.g., patent application filings before product launch, FDA advisory committee composition)
- **Implied probability from options market**: What probability is the options market pricing? Compare to your assessed probability.
- **(P0.4) Management tone & evasion priors**: If `transcript_nlp.json` is available, incorporate `tone.label` (bullish/neutral/bearish), `tone.tone_delta_vs_prior`, `qa_evasion.evasion_score_0_100`, and `miss_explanation.classification` (transitory/structural) as Bayesian priors on the next earnings catalyst probability. Specifically: bearish tone + structural miss + high evasion score (≥50) compounds negative-outcome probability; bullish tone + raised guidance + low evasion supports positive-outcome probability. State the prior adjustment explicitly (e.g., "Base earnings beat probability 60%; transcript NLP signals lower it to 45% — prior-quarter guidance lowered, Q&A evasion 65/100").

Output: Probability(positive outcome) | Probability(negative outcome) | Probability(neutral/mixed)</step>

<step n="3" name="Pre/Post-Event Drift Analysis">Run event study analysis for historical similar events:
- **Pre-Event Drift**: Does the stock tend to drift up/down in the 30 days before this type of event? Is this drift justified by fundamentals or is it speculative positioning?
- **Post-Event Drift (PEAD for earnings)**: Does the stock continue to drift in the earnings-surprise direction for weeks after? (PEAD = post-earnings announcement drift)
- **Event-Day Reaction Pattern**: Typical intraday and next-day volatility around similar events.

Use `compute_earnings_edge.py` output for earnings-specific drift patterns. Use `event_study.py` for other event types.</step>

<step n="4" name="Binary Event Scenario Modeling">For major binary events (FDA decisions, regulatory rulings, M&A votes):
- **Scenario A (Positive)**: Probability-weighted price target post-event. What's the fundamental value if the event goes favorably?
- **Scenario B (Negative)**: Probability-weighted price target post-event. What's the downside if the event goes against?
- **Scenario C (Delayed)**: What happens if the event is postponed? (common for regulatory decisions)
- **Kelly bet sizing**: Given the assessed probabilities and price targets, what's the optimal position size for this binary event? (Apply Fractional Kelly — 1/4)

Output: Expected value = P(positive) × Upside% - P(negative) × Downside%</step>

<step n="5" name="Catalyst Sequencing & Dependency Mapping">Map catalyst dependencies:
- **Sequential**: Event B cannot occur until Event A completes (e.g., Phase 2 results → Phase 3 initiation → NDA filing → PDUFA)
- **Conditional**: Event B's probability changes depending on Event A's outcome (e.g., competitor approval changes your drug's market positioning)
- **Independent**: Events that can occur regardless of others

Build a dependency tree. Identify bottleneck catalysts — events that, if they fail, kill downstream catalysts entirely.</step>

<step n="6" name="Catalyst Density & Clustering">Map the calendar to identify:
- **Catalyst clusters**: Multiple catalysts within a 2-week window = high event volatility
- **Catalyst droughts**: No major events for 2+ months = potential for drift or complacency
- **Catalyst quality**: Are catalysts likely to reduce uncertainty (good) or create new uncertainty (potentially bad)?

Score catalyst density: High (>3 events within 30 days), Moderate (1-3), Low (0-1). High-density periods should carry position size adjustments.</step>

<step n="7" name="Options Market Signal Extraction">Analyze options market for catalyst-specific signals:
- **Event volatility**: Compare near-event implied volatility vs far-event implied volatility. The spread tells you what the options market expects.
- **Straddle/Strangle pricing**: Cost of at-the-money straddle vs expected move. Is the options market overpricing or underpricing the event risk?
- **Unusual options activity**: Large block trades, sweeps, or unusual open interest changes near catalyst dates.
- **Put/Call skew around events**: Is the skew consistent with the directional thesis?</step>

<step n="8" name="Synthesis & Portfolio Integration">Produce:
1. **Ranked Catalyst Table**: All catalysts in chronological order, with assessed probability, expected impact, and position-sizing signal.
2. **Top 3 High-Conviction Catalysts**: Events where your assessed probability differs most from market-implied probability (edge).
3. **Catalyst Risk Matrix**: Cross-reference catalysts with the risk analyst's scenario analysis. Do catalysts amplify or mitigate identified risks?
4. **Timeline Integration**: Map catalysts onto the report horizon (long/mid/short). Which catalysts are most relevant for each horizon?
5. **Position-Sizing Overlay**: Should the analyst size up ahead of high-conviction catalysts? Size down ahead of binary events?</step>

</workflow>

### Validation Gates
- Catalyst calendar covers at minimum 6 months forward, with specific dates or date windows
- At least 3 events have probability assessments based on historical frequency data
- Binary events have explicit scenario payoffs (upside/downside price targets)
- Options market implied move compared to assessed expected move for major events
- Dependency map identifies at least one bottleneck catalyst
- **(P0.4)** When `{company_dir}/transcript_nlp.json` exists, the next-earnings catalyst entry MUST cite guidance_shift, tone label, and evasion score as inputs to the directional bias and probability assessment

### Constraints
<constraint>Never present a catalyst as "certain" — all events carry probability < 100%</constraint>
<constraint>For binary events, always present BOTH scenarios with explicit payoffs — never just the base case</constraint>
<constraint>Pre-event drift analysis must reference actual historical data, not narrative</constraint>
<constraint>When options data is unavailable, state "Options market signal unavailable" — do not fabricate</constraint>
<constraint>Catalyst probability assessments must distinguish between: stated probability (what management says), historical frequency (what actually happens), and market-implied probability (what options price)</constraint>

### Data Acquisition & Scripts
Run `{plugin_root}/scripts/compute_earnings_edge.py [TICKER] --output ./reports/[RUN_ID]/earnings_edge.json` for historical beat/miss rate, PEAD, and earnings quality trend.

**Post-earnings continuation gate (pitfall 20)** — when the most recent earnings has just printed (within 5 trading days), pass the 4 factors to `compute_earnings_edge.py` so the gate verdict appears in `earnings_edge.json["post_earnings_gate"]`:

```
uv run python ${PLUGIN_ROOT}/scripts/compute_earnings_edge.py [TICKER] \
  --fundamentals-confirmed true|false \
  --sector-co-moving true|false \
  --net-call-premium-positive true|false \
  --short-interest-pct 12.5 \
  --output ./reports/[RUN_ID]/earnings_edge.json
```

Resolve each flag from upstream stage outputs:
- `fundamentals_confirmed` ← Stage 5 fundamentals + transcript_nlp `guidance_shift == raised`
- `sector_co_moving` ← Stage 1 sector RS + 5-day peer return
- `net_call_premium_positive` ← Stage 11 options flow (5-day rolling)
- `short_interest_pct` ← Stage 11 short interest data

If `post_earnings_gate.verdict == "continuation"`, the catalyst calendar MUST flag continuation, not fade. **Do NOT predict a multi-day fade** when 3+/4 factors are bullish — see `references/pitfalls/13-post-earnings-momentum-vs-fade.md` (rule embedded in Stage 14 enforcement).

Run `{plugin_root}/scripts/event_study.py [TICKER] --events ./reports/[RUN_ID]/events.json --output ./reports/[RUN_ID]/event_study.json` for CAR analysis around corporate events.
Run `{plugin_root}/scripts/fetch_realtime.py [TICKER] --options --output ./reports/[RUN_ID]/options.json` for options chain and implied volatility data.
