# pi-multiagent graph cookbook

Package examples are schema-checked graph shapes, not a runtime template API. Copy/adapt warning: copy a trusted example into the workspace, adapt the objective, tasks, paths, trusted command list, owned files, stop condition, and output fields, then start it with `graphFile` or inline `graph`. `timeoutSecondsPerStep` defaults to 7200 seconds; examples raise it to 9000 seconds for review-friendly headroom.

## Choose a graph shape first

Graph design ladder:

1. No delegation when one direct pass is cheaper.
2. Single specialist for one scoped local question.
3. Inline fan-in for one-off local specialists.
4. Read-only audit fanout for independent docs/runtime/risk lanes.
5. Cwd-launched fanout when each lane should start from a different trusted subtree.
6. Map-reduce audit fanout when mapper lanes should stay independent until one reducer dedupes owners and decisions.
7. Tree-reduce source review when broad mappers need intermediate reducers before one final decision.
8. Sharded map-reduce when the parent can name separate components or retained artifacts.
9. Artifact-chained follow-up when prior retained artifacts must survive compaction, approval checkpoints, or phase separation.
10. Product-experience source audit when first success, trust, recovery, and repeat use need source-grounded review.
11. Evidence-trace audit when a behavior claim must be followed from source contract through retained artifacts and operator copy.
12. Web research lane when current external facts matter and explicit extension-tool provenance is available.
13. Human-gated plan when implementation needs a decision question before any write authority exists.
14. Command validation or validation matrix when parent-named shell proof should be observed by validator lanes.
15. Completed-proof review or release-readiness review when final judgment needs evidence from multiple terminal lanes.

## Contract quick links

This cookbook chooses graph shapes and task packets. The canonical action, graph schema, authority, tool, model/thinking, `outputLimit`, limits, and troubleshooting contract lives in [`/skill:pi-multiagent`](../SKILL.md).

Before starting a copied graph:

- Inspect authority, tools, extension grants, prompts, tasks, and `cwd` values.
- Keep read-only graphs read-only; every runnable child still needs `authority.allowFilesystemRead:true` because mandatory read/discovery (`read`, `grep`, `find`, `ls`) is always present.
- Omitted `agent.tools` inherits catalog defaults capped by graph authority. Explicit `agent.tools` replaces the catalog profile, then mandatory read/discovery is added.
- Use trusted shell execution only when the task names the exact commands or bounded command class; prefer `package:validator` for command proof.
- Use trusted mutation execution only after current parent authorization names owned files, exclusions, and validation commands; `package:worker` needs effective `edit` or `write`.
- Graph `needs` / `after` gates are model dependencies, not human approval checkpoints; stop with a decision question and start a separate mutation-capable run only after approval.
- Treat `cwd` as a launch context boundary, not a file policy; it must stay inside the invocation cwd and is checked again before launch.
- Copy extension-tool provenance from live `catalog` output when a graph needs web research.
- Treat `--agent-team-subagent-skills enabled|disabled` as a product flag, not a graph field.

## Task packet templates

Parent graph packet:

## Starting a copied graph file

`graphFile` is start-only and loads a pure relative JSON graph file inside the current cwd:

Do not point `graphFile` at packaged example paths. Copy the example into the workspace, adapt it, inspect authority and tasks, then start the copied file.

`agent.model` and `agent.thinking` are child launch overrides for one step. Omit them to use agent metadata and parent launch defaults; whitespace-only `agent.model` is invalid. `outputLimit` is a retained assistant-output hard cap, not token/cost control and not the `run_status`/`step_result` preview `maxBytes`.

Use `after` for fallback synthesis when terminal evidence from failed lanes should still reach the sink. Use `needs` when the downstream step must require successful upstream completion. This is explicit graph choreography, not a hidden runtime fallback.

## Supervision quick guide

- Let healthy runs finish; pushed notices are compact receipts.
- Use `run_status` for compact state or a bounded `waitSeconds` wait/read. In JSON/API/headless use, this is the fallback when pushed notices are unavailable. The result includes a structured wait receipt; timeout means no material event, not failure.
- Pass the returned `Cursor` back as `run_status.cursor` for incremental wait/debug reads; it is not a run handle or artifact path.
- Add `preview:true` only when bounded assistant text belongs in context.
- Use `step_result` for one step's text or artifact; `run_status.stepId` filters wait/debug events only.
- Use `debugEvents:true` only for package debugging.
- Message only live steps for clarification or scope repair. Accepted-for-delivery transport does not prove child compliance.
- Cleanup only after retained artifacts are preserved or intentionally discarded.

## Partial evidence triage

When a run is mixed, failed, canceled, or timed out:

1. Read `run_status` without preview to capture terminal state, diagnostics, sink artifacts, and artifact paths.
2. Inspect failed or critical upstream steps with `step_result`.
3. Separate observed validation from claimed validation.
4. Preserve conflicts and missing proof in the final parent decision.
5. Start a follow-up graph only when the next graph has a narrower evidence packet.
