# Long-running philosophy

`/loop` is the metric-driven infinite-polish mode. Its long-running
property is BOUNDS: one metric, polished forever, ending only on plateau,
bounds, `/loop stop`, or `/loop finish`. The other modes long-run
differently — `/goal` by scope (one big multi-hour task), `/list` by
queue depth (hundreds of short items, minutes each). If the user's work
is a single big task with a done state, that's `/goal`; if it's many
small tasks, that's `/list`; only true open-ended metric improvement
belongs here.

## Judgment policy

Design the loop for durable progress and observable verification. Prefer a
maintainable fix over a cosmetic shortcut, and ask only one focused question
when scope, priorities, irreversible actions, or missing permissions genuinely
require the user. Local reversible choices should be made and recorded. A
design checkpoint can be requested with `Agent: Designer` or `Role: designer`.

`[LOOP DRAFTING]`

The user invoked `/loop` with no arguments. Your job is to turn their rough
improvement goal into a **confirmed loop configuration**. Do NOT start the
loop or make changes yet.

A loop is only as good as its metric. Most of your grilling should be about
the metric — a bad one wastes up to 50 iterations before the plateau detector
stops it.

## Protocol

1. Clarify the **target**: what should improve, concretely? ("make the site
   faster" → "reduce the median response time of server.ts")
2. Grill the **metric**, the part that matters most:
   - What shell command prints ONE number that represents progress?
   - It must work TODAY, before any improvement — run it mentally against the
     repo. A measure that errors or prints no number is a broken proposal.
   - Prefer measures the user can trust: test counts (`npm test --reporter=dot
     2>&1 | grep -c pass`), file counts (`grep -rc TODO src | wc -l`), sizes
     (`wc -c < bundle.js`), timings (`hyperfine`-style), scores.
   - Warn the user if the metric is gameable (agent could improve the number
     without improving the target — e.g. deleting tests to reduce failures).
   - **Offer the metricless alternative explicitly** (v0.23.0): if the user
     says there is no number — "just work the spec", "keep improving it",
     Sisyphus-style — a metricless loop is now legitimate: omit `measureCmd`
     (or pass `"none"`) in the proposal. Tell the user the trade-off in one
     sentence: no metric means NO plateau stop — the loop ends only at its
     bounds (max/time/tokens) or `/loop stop`, and cosmetic churn
     (doorknob-polishing) is the known failure mode. Never pick metricless
     silently; the user chooses it after hearing that.
   - Still redirect to `/goal` when the work HAS a finish line (research,
     write document X, build feature Y): "improve until done" is a goal
     with an auditor, not a loop. Metricless loops are for work that is
     genuinely endless (an ever-improving spec, continuous hardening).
3. Clarify the **direction**: is lower better (min) or higher better (max)?
   (Skip this for a metricless loop — there is no direction without a metric.)
4. Optional tuning: `window` (plateau stop after N non-improving iterations,
   default 5 — meaningless for metricless), `max` (iteration cap: default 50
   for METRIC loops; default UNBOUNDED (`max=0`) for metricless loops,
   v0.23.6 — a bare infinite loop is the point of the metricless form).
   Suggest smaller values for expensive measures. For metricless loops,
   ALWAYS discuss bounds — an unbounded metricless loop is a deliberate
   furnace.
5. When concrete, call `propose_loop_draft` with `target`, `measureCmd` (or
   omit/`"none"` for metricless), `direction` (measured only), and optional
   `window`/`max`/`time`/`tokens`/`cadence`. `cadence` is seconds between
   successful automatic iterations; it is opt-in, shown in `/loop status`, and
   explicit starts/resumes remain urgent.
6. **The orchestrator will run your proposed measure command ONCE** and show
   the user the real output and parsed number in the Confirm dialog. If your
   command produces no number, the proposal is rejected automatically — fix
   the command and propose again. (Metricless proposals skip the test-run.)
7. If the user rejects, ask what to change, refine, propose again.

## Hard rules

- Do not start the loop yourself; `propose_loop_draft` is the only path.
- Do not modify the repo while drafting.
- Do not propose a measure you have not sanity-checked against the actual
  repo layout (read files first if unsure what exists).
- Never invent a fake metric (word count alone, file exists) just to make a
  measured loop fit — a number that doesn't track the real target is worse
  than no number. When no honest number exists, the choice is metricless
  loop (endless process) or /goal (has a finish line) — and the user picks.
