# Return to Dark Tower — Lore & World

## The Story

Long ago, the sorcerer-king **Azkol** built a Tower at the crossroads of the Four Kingdoms. Behind its ebon walls, he practiced dark sorcery in his search for power.

As Azkol's madness grew, his apprentice, the sorceress **Nimet**, plotted against him. She stole his wondrous treasures and fled the Tower, then recruited heroes from the Four Kingdoms to stop him.

One hero prevailed. Azkol was defeated, and the Tower lay vacant.

But now a **new adversary** has taken up residence. It grows in power, spreading corruption and calling forth wicked creatures from afar. This foe cannot be defeated alone. The heroes of the Four Kingdoms must unite and **return to the Tower**.

## The Four Kingdoms

The world is divided into four kingdoms — **North**, **East**, **South**, and **West** — separated by rivers. Each kingdom has 15 spaces of varied terrain.

### Terrain Types

| Terrain | Description |
| ---------- | ------------------------------- |
| Desert | Arid, sandy wastelands |
| Forest | Dense woodland areas |
| Hills | Rolling elevated terrain |
| Grasslands | Open plains and meadows |
| Mountains | High peaks and rocky terrain |
| Lake | Bodies of water within kingdoms |

### Rivers

Rivers serve as borders between kingdoms. Crossing a river costs movement but you cannot move along a river — it is a border, not a space.

## The Tower

The Dark Tower stands at the center of the Four Kingdoms, where their borders meet. It is a physical game piece with:

- **Three rotating drum levels** — representing the Tower's internal mechanisms
- **12 seal slots** — covering openings through which skulls can emerge
- **Skull-dropping mechanism** — players drop skulls into the top at the end of each turn
- **Bluetooth connectivity** — syncs with the companion app to drive game events

### Seals and Glyphs

The Tower's 12 openings are initially covered by seals. As the game progresses:

- Events cause seals to be removed
- Removed seals allow **skulls to emerge** more frequently
- Behind some seals are **glyphs** — symbols that impose spirit costs on matching actions when facing a hero's home kingdom

### The Tower's Influence

The Tower is the source of corruption in the Four Kingdoms. Its influence manifests through:

- **Skull emergence** — spreading evil to buildings
- **Events** — foe strikes, spawns, power growth, and direct Tower actions
- **The adversary** — who grows in power within the Tower until the heroes force a confrontation

---

## Companions

Allies from across the Four Kingdoms who join the heroes' cause. Each game begins with a **main companion** tied to the selected main goal. Additional companions can be recruited through monthly companion quests.

### Notable Companions (from rulebook)

- **Hakan the Artificer** — Can be recruited through companion quests
- **Miras the Horselord** — Main companion for certain goals; introduces **caravan tokens** (moving dungeons)
- **Letha the Dryad** — Main companion for certain goals; introduces **siege tree tokens** (spaces count as forests)

## Special Tokens

Some adversaries and companions introduce unique tokens:

| Token | Source | Effect |
| ------------- | ------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| River of Fire | Ashstrider | Turns rivers into rivers of fire; crossing costs 6 warriors. Cannot be removed. |
| Spore | Lingering Rot | Placed on hero board; 3rd spore = return all + gain corruption |
| Caravan | Miras the Horselord | Moving dungeons that can be explored |
| Siege Tree | Letha the Dryad | Spaces count as forests; can be moved via Reinforce action |
| Dungeon | Various quests | Marks dungeon locations; shows dungeon trait |
| Foe | App events | Shows foe locations, level, and traits (double-sided) |

## The Competitive Legend

In the competitive game mode, the story shifts: the heroes travel back to the time of Nimet's rebellion against Azkol. Each hero races to prove themselves worthy by completing heroic tests, entering the Tower dungeon, and stealing Azkol's most powerful relic to weaken him forever.
