# Return to Dark Tower — Heroes

## Overview

Each player controls a hero from one of the Four Kingdoms. Heroes have unique virtue tiles, a Banner action, a base move value, and starting resources.

## Hero Setup

1. Place your hero board in front of you.
2. Place 3 hero virtue tiles (inactive side up) in empty slots on your hero board.
3. Place your hero figure on the citadel space in the kingdom facing you (your home kingdom).
4. Place the kingdom virtue tile for your home kingdom in an empty slot on your hero board.
5. Collect starting resources: **7 warriors** and **1 spirit**.

## Hero Attributes

Each hero board shows:

- **Banner Action:** An optional action taken at the start of your turn.
- **Move Value:** Base number of spaces you can move per turn.
- **Hero Virtues (3 active + 3 inactive):** Unique abilities. Inactive virtues can be activated by spending spirit at a citadel.
- **Kingdom Virtue:** One virtue tile from your home kingdom.
- **Corruption slots:** Space for up to 2 corruptions. A 3rd corruption ends the game.

## Virtues

- You start with **3 active** and **3 inactive** hero virtues.
- Gain a virtue by spending spirit when Reinforcing at a citadel → flip one inactive virtue face up.
- Activated virtues go into effect immediately.

## Corruptions

- Maximum **2 corruptions** per hero. A 3rd corruption = game over.
- You gain a corruption when you can't fully resolve losses, when a failed quest instructs it, or when a building in your home kingdom is destroyed.
- Corruptions can be removed at a sanctuary (spend spirit for the enhanced effect).
- You cannot gain more than one corruption per single effect.

## Hero List

> **Note:** The specific heroes, their unique virtues, and Banner actions are defined on the hero boards and cards included in the game. Below are the heroes included in the base game. Detailed abilities should be expanded from the physical components.

### Base Game Heroes

- **Relic Hunter**
- **Orphaned Scion**
- **Spymaster**

Each hero has:

- A unique set of 3 active + 3 inactive virtue tiles
- A unique Banner action
- A base move value (typically 3)
- Access to a kingdom virtue based on their home kingdom

---

## Item Capacity

Each hero can carry:

| Item Type | Limit |
| ---------- | --------------------------- |
| Potion | Unlimited |
| Gear | Up to one of each (6 types) |
| Treasure | Up to four |
| Quest Item | Unlimited |

If you ever gain a duplicate gear or 5th treasure, you must lose one.

---

## Spirit Doubling

You may spend 1 spirit to **double** your move value for the turn. You must decide before you start moving. Modifiers from virtues or gear are applied before doubling. Once you've started moving, your move value is locked for that turn.
