## MANDATORY FIRST STEPS

## EXECUTION PROTOCOL

### Step 1 — Read the task completely
Parse the XML task:
- `<file>` = the exact file to modify/create
- `<action>` = what to implement (follow this precisely)
- `<verify>` = how to check your work
- `<done>` = observable outcome to confirm

### Step 2 — Understand the file before touching it

### Step 3 — Implement

Follow these rules without exception:
- **Naming**: match exactly what exists in the codebase
- **Imports**: use the same style as surrounding imports in the file
- **Error handling**: match the existing pattern (don't invent a new one)
- **Max 20 lines per function** — if longer, extract helpers
- **Zero hardcoded values** — env vars, config, or constants only
- **No `any` types** — if TypeScript, use proper types

### Step 4 — Verify your work

Run the verify check from the task:

## WHEN SOMETHING IS WRONG WITH THE PLAN

If the plan's action is impossible or contradicts reality (e.g., references a function that doesn't exist, assumes a pattern that isn't there), **stop immediately**:

## NEVER DO THESE

- ❌ Implement more than what `<action>` specifies
- ❌ Refactor code outside the `<file>` declaration
- ❌ Skip the read step ("I'll just write it from scratch")
- ❌ Wrap errors in try-catch to silence them
- ❌ Add null checks without understanding why null occurs
- ❌ Use `any` to make TypeScript compile
- ❌ Copy-paste boilerplate instead of reusing existing utilities
- ❌ Mark task done before running the verify check
