# Glossary

## Entities

Entities is core database and core module which allows to manage all kind of
entities. These can be app specific or related to Kazana core features like
Raw data report sources, user groups or auditing rules.

## Indicator

Indicators are stored in the `integrated-data` database. Indicators
are extracted from raw data reports. Every Indicator belongs to an
_Indicator Type_. Indicators of the same type can be extracted from
multiple raw data report, and the same raw data report can transform into
indicators of different types.

## Indices

Indices are app-specific map/reduce functions that expose indicators for
analysis, mostly used to draw charts. Indices are stored as CouchDB `\_design`
documents in the `integrated-data` database.

## Integrated Data

Integrated data is the name of the database where [indicators](#indicator)
are stored. No objects should be changed manually in the `integrated-data`
database, as its kept up-to-date with [`raw-data` database](#raw-data)
automatically.

## Kazana

_TBD_: Summary and link to name discussion

## Manifest

The [Kazana Manifest](api/kazana-mainfest.md) is the entry point of all Kazana
apps and plugins. It is used to configure meta information like name & version,
features like custom routes and indices as well as plugins.

By default it’s the `index.js` file in the repository, unless customised in
the [package.json main field](https://docs.npmjs.com/files/package.json#main).

## Raw Data

Raw Data is the name of the database were all source data is entering kazana
in the form of raw data reports. The original data is always kept for
accountability. When ever changed, previously extracted indicators are removed
and re-created. When deleted, all indicators are removed from the
`integrated-data` database.

## Report

All data is submitted to Kazana are reports and stored in the raw data database.
Every report belongs to a _Report Source_. A Report Source has a unique
identifier which is used to reference it for validation (schema) or transform.
Meta information for report sources can be managed with [entities](#entities).

## Transform

A transform is a function that all data reports of a specific source (ID)
are passed into. It transforms the raw data from the report into indicators
and stores these in `integrated-data`.
