# 🌟 Brainstorm Concept - Workflow Instructions

## Overview

This workflow guides you through a creative brainstorming session to generate and refine your game concept. By the end, you'll have a solid concept brief ready for market analysis and further development.

**Time:** 30-60 minutes
**Difficulty:** Beginner
**Output:** `concept-brief.md`

---

## Step 1: Welcome & Setup

### Starting the Session

Welcome! I'm Sparky, and I'm excited to explore your game concept with you! 💡

Let's start by understanding where you are:

**Option A - I have an idea:**
> Tell me about it! Even a vague sense of "I want to make something like X" works.

**Option B - Starting from scratch:**
> No problem! Let's discover your game together. Answer these:
> 1. What games have you been playing lately that excited you?
> 2. What kind of experience do you want to CREATE for players?
> 3. Are there any constraints? (Solo dev? Mobile? 6-month timeline?)

**Option C - I have multiple ideas:**
> List them briefly! We'll explore each and find the most promising.

---

## Step 2: Explore Ideas

### The Exploration Phase

Based on your input, we'll explore in these directions:

#### 2.1 Genre Foundation
- What genre(s) does this fit? Can we combine unexpected genres?
- What are the conventions? Which should we keep, break, or twist?

#### 2.2 Core Verbs
- What does the player DO most of the time?
- Primary verb: (fight / build / explore / solve / grow / manage / etc.)
- Secondary verbs: What variety exists?

#### 2.3 Setting & Theme
- Where/when does this take place?
- What's the visual identity?
- What themes does it explore? (redemption, survival, discovery, etc.)

#### 2.4 Player Questions
I'll ask you:
- "If your game was a movie, what movie would it be?"
- "What's the ONE feeling you want players to have?"
- "What would make someone recommend this to a friend?"

---

## Step 3: Find the Hook

### What Makes It Special?

Every successful game has a "hook" - the thing that makes it unique.

#### Hook Discovery Questions:

1. **The Tweet Test:** Can you describe the game in 280 characters in a way that makes someone want to play?

2. **The Screenshot Test:** What single image would make someone wishlist your game?

3. **The Comparison Trap:** If someone says "Oh, so it's like X?" - what's your "Yes, but..." response?

4. **The Combination Test:** Is there an unusual combination here? (X meets Y)

5. **The Innovation Test:** What's ONE thing this game does that no other game does?

#### Hook Types:

| Type | Example |
|------|---------|
| Mechanic Hook | "You can rewind time" (Braid) |
| Narrative Hook | "Your choices ACTUALLY matter" (Undertale) |
| Aesthetic Hook | "Stunning hand-drawn art" (Cuphead) |
| Emotional Hook | "A game that makes you cry" (To The Moon) |
| Meta Hook | "The game knows you're playing" (Doki Doki) |
| Scale Hook | "Build an entire planet" (Dyson Sphere) |

## Step 4: Define Core Fantasy

   - Physical power (warrior, athlete)

   - Social power (leader, influencer)
   - Creative power (builder, artist)

2. **Role Fantasy:** Who are they in this world?
   - The chosen one
   - The underdog
   - The outsider
   - The mentor
   - The wild card

3. **Emotional Fantasy:** What feeling do they chase?
   - Domination / mastery
   - Discovery / wonder
   - Connection / belonging
   - Expression / creativity

---

## Step 5: Create the Pitch

### Elevator Pitch

Fill in this template:

```
[GAME NAME] is a [GENRE] game where you play as [PROTAGONIST]
who must [CORE ACTION/GOAL] in [SETTING/WORLD].
The core loop is: [VERB] → [VERB] → [REWARD].
What makes it unique: [HOOK - one sentence].
Players will feel [EMOTION] when they [KEY MOMENT].
Target audience: Fans of [SIMILAR GAMES/EXPERIENCES].
```

### Logline

Distill to ONE compelling sentence:
> "[GAME NAME]: [Hook + Core Experience in 10-15 words]"

Examples:
- "Hades: Escape the underworld, die, fall in love, repeat."
- "Celeste: Climb a mountain, face your demons, literally."
- "Stardew Valley: Escape capitalism, grow tomatoes, find love."

---

## Step 6: Document the Concept

### Creating Your Concept Brief

I'll help you create a `concept-brief.md` file with:

1. **Overview** - Logline, pitch, and hook
2. **Core Concept** - Genre, setting, themes
3. **Player Experience** - Fantasy, emotions, moments
4. **Gameplay Foundation** - Core loop, key mechanics
5. **Unique Selling Points** - What sets it apart
6. **Scope Indicators** - Rough sense of size
7. **Open Questions** - Things to figure out later

The document will be saved to:
```
_gdks-output/01-ideation/concept-brief.md
```

---

## Next Steps After This Workflow

Once you have your concept brief:

1. **Validate the Market** → `@market-analyst` with `*market-research`
   - Is there demand? Who's the competition?

2. **Explore Mechanics** → `@mechanics-explorer` with `*explore-mechanics`
   - Deep dive into how the game PLAYS

3. **Refine the Hook** → Stay with me! Run `*hook` for deeper exploration

4. **Team Synthesis** → `@ideation-coordinator` with `*synthesize`
   - Prepare handoff to Design Team

## Tips for Great Brainstorming

✅ **DO:**
- Say "yes, and..." to build on ideas
- Consider constraints as creative fuel
- Reference games you love (but don't copy)
- Think about player FEELINGS, not features
- Embrace weird combinations

❌ **DON'T:**
- Dismiss ideas too quickly
- Get stuck on details (save for later!)
- Worry about "is this possible" yet
- Compare to AAA scope
- Forget that you're making this for PLAYERS

---

## Let's Begin!
