# gamepad-node Implementation Plan

A high-performance Node.js implementation of the browser Gamepad API with native SDL2 bindings.

## Status: ✅ COMPLETE (v0.1.0)

**Completion Date:** 2024-10-25
**All phases implemented and tested**

### Implemented Features
- ✅ Browser Gamepad API compatibility (`navigator.getGamepads()`)
- ✅ Native SDL2 bindings (C++ with N-API)
- ✅ Four-tier controller mapping architecture
- ✅ SDL platform-specific mappings with vendor/product matching
- ✅ EmulationStation database integration (291 controllers)
- ✅ Hot-plug detection (gamepadconnected/gamepaddisconnected events)
- ✅ Vibration/rumble support (GamepadHapticActuator)
- ✅ CLI tester with blessed (ASCII art visualizer)
- ✅ Zero-config installation (automatic SDL2 download)
- ✅ Cross-platform support (macOS, Linux, Windows)
- ✅ Null safety for controller disconnect handling

## Project Goals

1. **Browser API Compatibility**: Implement `navigator.getGamepads()` API for Node.js
2. **Custom SDL2 Bindings**: Minimal, focused bindings for gamepad/joystick only
3. **Controller Database**: Reuse jsgamelauncher's EmulationStation controller mappings
4. **CLI Tester**: Interactive ASCII art controller visualizer
5. **Zero Configuration**: Automatic SDL2 download and prebuilt binaries

## Technology Stack

- **Native Bindings**: C++ with N-API (Node-API)
- **SDL Integration**: SDL2 via @kmamal/build-sdl prebuilt binaries
- **Build System**: node-gyp (reusing webaudio-node's scripts)
- **Controller DB**: Directly copied from jsgamelauncher (EmulationStation configs, parsing logic, and mapping code)
- **CLI UI**: blessed (pure Node.js ncurses-like terminal UI, no native bindings)

## Phase 1: Project Setup & Infrastructure ✅ COMPLETE

### 1.1 Project Scaffolding
- [x] Initialize package.json
  ```json
  {
    "name": "gamepad-node",
    "version": "0.1.0",
    "description": "Browser Gamepad API implementation for Node.js",
    "main": "index.js",
    "type": "module",
    "bin": {
      "gamepad-test": "./bin/cli.js"
    }
  }
  ```

- [x] Copy build scripts from webaudio-node:
  - `scripts/download-sdl.mjs` (modify SDL_CONFIG for gamepad needs)
  - `scripts/install.mjs`
  - `scripts/build.mjs`

- [x] Create `binding.gyp`:
  ```json
  {
    'targets': [{
      'target_name': 'gamepad_native',
      'sources': [
        'src/native/module.cpp',
        'src/native/gamepad_manager.cpp',
        'src/native/device_handler.cpp'
      ],
      'dependencies': [
        "<!(node -p \"require('node-addon-api').targets\"):node_addon_api_except"
      ]
    }]
  }
  ```

### 1.2 Dependencies

  "dependencies": {
    "@kmamal/build-sdl": "file:../build-sdl",
    "blessed": "^0.1.81",
    "blessed-contrib": "^4.11.0"
  },
  "devDependencies": {
    "node-addon-api": "^8.5.0",

## Phase 2: Native C++ Implementation ✅ COMPLETE

### 2.1 SDL2 Gamepad Bindings (module.cpp, gamepad_manager.cpp)

**Required SDL2 APIs** (minimal subset):
```cpp
// Initialization
SDL_Init(SDL_INIT_JOYSTICK | SDL_INIT_GAMECONTROLLER)
SDL_Quit()
// Controller enumeration
SDL_NumJoysticks()
SDL_IsGameController(device_index)
SDL_GameControllerOpen(device_index)
SDL_GameControllerClose(controller)
// Joystick enumeration (for non-standard controllers)
SDL_JoystickOpen(device_index)
SDL_JoystickClose(joystick)
SDL_JoystickInstanceID()
// Controller state
SDL_GameControllerGetButton()
SDL_GameControllerGetAxis()
SDL_GameControllerName()
SDL_JoystickGetGUID()
// Event handling
SDL_PollEvent()
SDL_Event (controller/joystick events)
```

### 2.2 GamepadManager Implementation

**gamepad_manager.h:**
```cpp
#ifndef GAMEPAD_MANAGER_H
#define GAMEPAD_MANAGER_H
#include <napi.h>
#include <SDL.h>
#include <vector>
#include <map>
namespace gamepad {
struct GamepadState {
    SDL_JoystickID instance_id;
    std::string id;              // Controller name
    std::string guid;            // SDL GUID
    bool is_controller;          // true = SDL_GameController, false = SDL_Joystick
    // Standard Gamepad API state
    std::array<bool, 17> buttons;
    std::array<float, 4> axes;
    bool connected;
    void* device;                // SDL_GameController* or SDL_Joystick*
};
class GamepadManager : public Napi::ObjectWrap<GamepadManager> {
public:
    static Napi::Object Init(Napi::Env env, Napi::Object exports);
    static Napi::FunctionReference constructor;
    GamepadManager(const Napi::CallbackInfo& info);
    ~GamepadManager();
    // N-API Methods
    Napi::Value GetGamepads(const Napi::CallbackInfo& info);
    Napi::Value PollEvents(const Napi::CallbackInfo& info);
private:
    void ScanDevices();
    void AddDevice(int device_index);
    void RemoveDevice(SDL_JoystickID instance_id);
    void HandleEvent(const SDL_Event& event);
    std::map<SDL_JoystickID, GamepadState> gamepads_;
};
} // namespace gamepad
#endif
```

**Key Implementation Details:**
- Poll SDL events in JavaScript event loop (don't block)
- Map SDL button/axis indices to Standard Gamepad API layout
- Handle both GameController (standard) and Joystick (custom mapping)
- Store state in C++ for fast access

### 2.3 Standard Gamepad Mapping

**Button Layout (Standard Mapping):**
```cpp
// Standard Gamepad button indices
enum StandardButton {
    BUTTON_A = 0,           // South (Xbox: A, PS: Cross)
    BUTTON_B = 1,           // East (Xbox: B, PS: Circle)
    BUTTON_X = 2,           // West (Xbox: X, PS: Square)
    BUTTON_Y = 3,           // North (Xbox: Y, PS: Triangle)
    BUTTON_L1 = 4,          // Left shoulder
    BUTTON_R1 = 5,          // Right shoulder
    BUTTON_L2 = 6,          // Left trigger (as button)
    BUTTON_R2 = 7,          // Right trigger (as button)
    BUTTON_SELECT = 8,      // Back/Select/Share
    BUTTON_START = 9,       // Start/Options
    BUTTON_L3 = 10,         // Left stick press
    BUTTON_R3 = 11,         // Right stick press
    BUTTON_DPAD_UP = 12,
    BUTTON_DPAD_DOWN = 13,
    BUTTON_DPAD_LEFT = 14,
    BUTTON_DPAD_RIGHT = 15,
    BUTTON_GUIDE = 16       // Home/Guide/PS button
};
// Standard Gamepad axes
enum StandardAxis {
    AXIS_LEFT_X = 0,        // Left stick X (-1 = left, +1 = right)
    AXIS_LEFT_Y = 1,        // Left stick Y (-1 = up, +1 = down)
    AXIS_RIGHT_X = 2,       // Right stick X
    AXIS_RIGHT_Y = 3,       // Right stick Y
};
```

**SDL GameController Mapping** (already standard):
```cpp
// SDL_GameController already maps to standard layout
// Just need to translate SDL enums to array indices
SDL_CONTROLLER_BUTTON_A -> buttons[0]
SDL_CONTROLLER_BUTTON_B -> buttons[1]
// etc...
```

**SDL Joystick Mapping** (use controller DB):
```cpp
// For non-standard joysticks, use EmulationStation mappings
// Pass to JavaScript layer for database lookup
// Return custom mapping array
```

## Phase 3: JavaScript API Layer ✅ COMPLETE

### 3.1 Gamepad Class (src/javascript/Gamepad.js)

```javascript
export class Gamepad {
    constructor(native_data) {
        this.id = native_data.id;
        this.index = native_data.index;
        this.connected = native_data.connected;
        this.timestamp = performance.now();
        this.mapping = 'standard';
        // Buttons: array of GamepadButton { pressed, touched, value }
        this.buttons = native_data.buttons.map((pressed, i) => ({
            pressed: pressed,
            touched: pressed,
            value: pressed ? 1.0 : 0.0
        }));
        // Axes: array of floats [-1.0, 1.0]
        this.axes = [...native_data.axes];
    }
}
export class GamepadButton {
    constructor(pressed = false, value = 0.0) {
        this.pressed = pressed;
        this.touched = pressed;
        this.value = value;
    }
}
```

### 3.2 Navigator Shim (src/javascript/Navigator.js)

```javascript
import { GamepadManager } from './GamepadManager.js';
let manager = null;
export function installNavigatorShim() {
    if (!globalThis.navigator) {
        globalThis.navigator = {};
    }
    if (!manager) {
        manager = new GamepadManager();
    }
    globalThis.navigator.getGamepads = () => {
        return manager.getGamepads();
    };
}
```

### 3.3 Controller Database Integration

**Copy directly from `../jsgamelauncher/controllers/`** (we are the author):
- `db.json` - Pre-compiled controller mappings (100+ controllers)
- `parse_cfg.js` - EmulationStation XML parser
- `knulli_es_input.cfg` - Knulli controller database
- `batocera_es_input.cfg` - Batocera controller database
- `create_db.js` - Script to rebuild db.json from configs

**Also copy the mapping logic from `../jsgamelauncher/gamepads.js`:**
- `getControllerDef()` function (lines 19-78) - GUID/name matching
- `createJSMap()` function (lines 103-186) - Mapping generation
- `esButtonMap` object (lines 83-101) - EmulationStation button IDs
- `stdGamepadMapping` object (lines 191-215) - Standard Gamepad API indices
- `xbox360JSMap` and `sonyPS4JSMap` fallback mappings (lines 218-292)

This gives us instant support for 100+ controllers without reinventing the wheel.

## Phase 4: Event Loop Integration ✅ COMPLETE

### 4.1 Event Polling Strategy

**Option A: Manual Polling** (simpler, recommended)
```javascript
import { GamepadManager } from 'gamepad-node';
const manager = new GamepadManager();
// User polls manually in their event loop
function gameLoop() {
    manager.poll();  // Polls SDL events, updates state
    const gamepads = navigator.getGamepads();
    // Handle gamepad state...
    requestAnimationFrame(gameLoop);
}
```

**Option B: Auto-polling with setInterval** (convenience)
```javascript
manager.startPolling(60); // Poll at 60 Hz
// Automatically dispatches events
```

### 4.2 Event Dispatching

```javascript
// Emit Node.js events
manager.on('gamepadconnected', (gamepad) => {
    console.log('Connected:', gamepad.id);
});
manager.on('gamepaddisconnected', (gamepad) => {
    console.log('Disconnected:', gamepad.id);
});
```

## Phase 5: CLI Tester Application ✅ COMPLETE

### 5.1 blessed Implementation (Pure Node.js, ncurses-like)

**Why blessed:**
- Pure JavaScript, no native bindings (unlike ncurses)
- Full terminal control with widgets (boxes, lists, gauges, progress bars)
- Efficient rendering - only redraws changed regions
- Mouse support
- Familiar API similar to DOM manipulation

### 5.2 Main Application Structure

**bin/cli.js:**
```javascript
#!/usr/bin/env node
import blessed from 'blessed';
import { installNavigatorShim } from '../src/javascript/Navigator.js';
installNavigatorShim();
// Create screen
const screen = blessed.screen({
    smartCSR: true,
    title: 'Gamepad Tester v1.0',
    fullUnicode: true
});
// Header box
const header = blessed.box({
    top: 0,
    left: 'center',
    width: '100%',
    height: 3,
    content: '{center}{bold}{cyan-fg}GAMEPAD TESTER v1.0{/}\nPress q or Ctrl+C to exit{/}',
    tags: true,
    border: { type: 'line' },
    style: {
        border: { fg: 'cyan' }
    }
});
// Status message
const statusBox = blessed.box({
    top: 3,
    left: 0,
    width: '100%',
    height: 3,
    content: '{yellow-fg}Waiting for controllers...{/}',
    tags: true,
    padding: { left: 2 }
});
screen.append(header);
screen.append(statusBox);
// Controller display boxes (up to 4 controllers)
const controllerBoxes = [];
function createControllerBox(index) {
    const top = 6 + (index * 25);
    const box = blessed.box({
        top,
        left: 0,
        width: '100%',
        height: 24,
        border: { type: 'line' },
        style: {
            border: { fg: 'green' }
        },
        tags: true,
        hidden: true
    });
    screen.append(box);
    return box;
}
for (let i = 0; i < 4; i++) {
    controllerBoxes.push(createControllerBox(i));
}
// Update loop at 60 FPS
                controllerBoxes[idx].show();
            }
        });
        // Hide unused boxes
        for (let i = gamepads.length; i < 4; i++) {
            controllerBoxes[i].hide();
        }
    }
    screen.render();
}
function createProgressBar(value, width) {
    const filled = Math.round(value * width);
    const empty = width - filled;
    return '█'.repeat(filled) + '░'.repeat(empty);
}
function createStickRow(x, y, row) {
    const chars = [];
    for (let col = 0; col < 5; col++) {
        const gridX = (col - 2) / 2; // -1 to +1
        const gridY = (row - 2) / 2;
        const dist = Math.sqrt(Math.pow(gridX - x, 2) + Math.pow(gridY - y, 2));
        chars.push(dist < 0.3 ? '●' : '·');
    }
    return chars.join(' ');
}
```

### 5.3 Alternative: blessed-contrib Gauges

For even prettier displays, use `blessed-contrib` for gauges and graphs:

```javascript
import contrib from 'blessed-contrib';
// Create gauge for triggers
const leftTriggerGauge = contrib.gauge({
    label: 'Left Trigger',
    percent: 0
});
// Update in loop
leftTriggerGauge.setPercent(gamepad.buttons[6].value * 100);
```

### 5.4 Usage

```bash
# Install globally
npm install -g gamepad-node
# Run tester
npx gamepad-node
# Or via package script
npm run test-gamepad
```

## Phase 6: Testing & Documentation ✅ COMPLETE

### 6.1 Basic Tests

**test/basic.js:**
```javascript
import { installNavigatorShim } from 'gamepad-node';
installNavigatorShim();
console.log('Waiting for gamepad...');
setInterval(() => {
    const gamepads = navigator.getGamepads();
    const connected = gamepads.filter(gp => gp !== null);
    if (connected.length > 0) {
        connected.forEach(gp => {
            console.log(`Gamepad ${gp.index}: ${gp.id}`);
            console.log('Buttons:', gp.buttons.map(b => b.pressed ? '✓' : '○').join(' '));
            console.log('Axes:', gp.axes.map(a => a.toFixed(2)).join(', '));
        });
    }
}, 1000);
```

## Key Decisions

### ✅ Custom SDL Bindings
- Following webaudio-node's proven approach
- ~300-400 lines of C++ vs. full @kmamal/sdl dependency
- Complete control over API surface

### ✅ Controller Database - Direct Copy from jsgamelauncher
- We are the author, so directly copy all controller code
- `controllers/` directory with db.json (100+ controllers)
- Mapping functions from `gamepads.js` (getControllerDef, createJSMap, etc.)
- EmulationStation configs (Knulli + Batocera)
- Zero development time for controller support

### ✅ CLI Tester with blessed
- Pure Node.js, no native bindings (unlike ncurses)
- True terminal control with ncurses-like widgets
- Efficient rendering (only redraws changed regions)
- Beautiful ASCII art with colors and box drawing
- Real-time updates at 60 FPS
- Mouse support included

### ✅ Build System
- Reuse webaudio-node's infrastructure
- Auto-download SDL2 from build-sdl
- Prebuilt binaries via GitHub Actions

## Success Criteria ✅ ALL COMPLETE

- [x] `navigator.getGamepads()` works identically to browser API
- [x] Supports both SDL_GameController and SDL_Joystick devices
- [x] Hot-plug detection (connect/disconnect while running)
- [x] Controller database matches 95%+ of common controllers
- [x] CLI tester displays all 17 buttons and 4 axes accurately
- [x] Works on macOS, Linux, Windows
- [x] npm install completes in <10 seconds (prebuilt binaries)
- [x] Zero manual SDL2 installation required

## Implemented Beyond v1.0

- [x] **Vibration/Rumble**: `gamepad.vibrationActuator.playEffect()` - ✅ IMPLEMENTED
- [x] **SDL Platform Mappings**: Cross-platform support with vendor/product matching - ✅ IMPLEMENTED
- [x] **Null Safety**: Proper handling of controller disconnects - ✅ IMPLEMENTED
- [x] **macOS Device Detection**: SDL_INIT_VIDEO for proper enumeration - ✅ IMPLEMENTED

## Future Enhancements (Post v0.1.0)

- **LED Control**: `gamepad.setLEDColor()` for PS4/PS5 controllers
- **Gyroscope/Accelerometer**: Motion sensor data
- **Battery Status**: `gamepad.battery.level`
- **Touchpad Support**: PS4/PS5 touchpad data
- **Web Server Mode**: Serve gamepad state over WebSocket
- **Recording/Playback**: Record input sequences for testing

## Notes

- SDL2 supports 95%+ of all game controllers via built-in database
- EmulationStation configs from jsgamelauncher cover exotic retro controllers (100+ mappings)
- Standard Gamepad API ensures browser code works unchanged in Node.js
- blessed CLI tester provides ncurses-like experience without C bindings
- All controller code directly copied from jsgamelauncher (we are the author)
- CLI tester invaluable for debugging controller mappings and verifying behavior

**Completion Date**: 2024-10-25
**Actual Time**: Completed in 1 day (intensive development session)

## Implementation Notes

### Key Architectural Decisions

1. **Four-Tier Mapping System**
   - Tier 1: SDL_GameController (SDL's built-in ~500 controllers)
   - Tier 2: SDL Platform Mappings (exact GUID + vendor/product matching)
   - Tier 3: EmulationStation Database (291 retro controllers)
   - Tier 4: Fallback (Xbox 360/PS4 style)

2. **Vendor/Product Matching**
   - Only applied to joysticks (isController=false)
   - Prevents overriding SDL's good controller mappings
   - Uses characters 8-19 of GUID for cross-platform matching

3. **Force Joystick Mode**
   - Controllers with cross-platform SDL mappings forced to joystick mode
   - Ensures consistent mapping across platforms
   - Better than SDL's built-in mapping in some cases

4. **macOS Compatibility**
   - Requires SDL_INIT_VIDEO for proper device enumeration
   - Added SDL_JoystickUpdate() call at initialization
   - 100ms delay before ScanDevices() for device detection

5. **Null Safety**
   - All mapping functions handle undefined/null gracefully
   - Proper cleanup on controller disconnect
   - No crashes when unplugging controllers

### Lessons Learned

- macOS SDL requires VIDEO subsystem even for joystick-only apps
- Vendor/product matching must be restricted to avoid false positives
- Controller disconnect handling requires null checks throughout stack
- blessed provides excellent terminal UI without native dependencies
- SDL platform mappings provide better cross-platform consistency than SDL's built-in database
