# Flag Icons SVG
[](https://www.npmjs.com/package/flag-icons-svg)
A beautiful `svg` + `less` + `sass` + `css` collection of country flags.
### Icons
All `svg` flags are based on [madebybowtie/FlagKit](https://github.com/madebybowtie/FlagKit).
## Installation
```bash
npm install flag-icons-svg
yarn add flag-icons-svg
```
## Instructions
```html
```
The `flag-icon` class works on any element (`span`, `i`, `div`, ...).
### Sass
```scss
@use "flag-icons-svg/sass/flag-icons";
```
To change the path of the `svg` files, configure the module with `with`. Setting `$flag-icons-path` before the import no longer works, because `@import` was replaced by `@use`.
```scss
@use "flag-icons-svg/sass/flag-icons" with ($flag-icons-path: '/assets/flags');
```
### Less
```less
@import "flag-icons-svg/less/flag-icons";
```
To change the path of the `svg` files, override `@flag-icons-path` after the import:
```less
@import "flag-icons-svg/less/flag-icons";
@flag-icons-path: '/assets/flags';
```
### Plain CSS
```html
```
The CSS references the flags as `../svg/.svg`, so keep the `css` and `svg` folders next to each other.
### Square flags
Add `flag-icon-square` to render a flag as a square instead of 21:15.
### Accessibility
Flags are decorative background images and are not announced by screen readers. Always show the country name as text next to the flag, or hide the flag from assistive technology:
```html
United States
```
If the flag is the only content, give it a label instead:
```html
```
### Extra svg files
`svg/lgbt.svg` is shipped but has no `flag-icon-*` class. `svg/missing.svg` is the default background of every `.flag-icon` and is shown for unknown codes.
## Contributing
`flags.json` is the single source of truth for the flag list. After adding an `svg` file, add its code and name to `flags.json` and run:
```bash
npm run generate # updates sass/_variables.scss, less/_variables.less, the table below and test.html
npm run build # compiles css/flag-icons.css
```
CI fails when these generated files are out of date.
