The Self and Holistic Assessment of Resilience for farmers and Pastoralists (SHARP) tool was developed by FAO to collect, share and analyse information, concerns and interests of farmers and pastoralists in a participatory self-assessment manner in the context of climate change. Since 2015, SHARP has been included in several projects in 18 different countries and collected information on more than 3500 households, providing training workshops to FAO country offices, governments, researchers, facilitators, enumerators and farmers.
SHARP highlights the priorities for strengthening climate resilience in rural communities across the agronomic, environmental, social and economic components of assessed households. SHARP is both an assessment and a monitoring & evaluation tool, which identifies areas of poor resilience and provides a baseline for intervention in the field, enabling comparison within and across communities, providing meaningful contextualized data which can be used to support farmers and pastoralists.
After incorporating the lessons learned in the field in the past 3 years and technically reviewing the tool, SHARP+ arises as an improved version of the SHARP former tool and it is released to the public in 2018. The SHARP+ application contains better targeted and focused questions, new modules, as well as more robust scoring system that jointly allow for a more accurate resilience assessment and understanding of small-scale agricultural producer’s livelihoods in the context of climate change.
