# research

Produce a useful answer with inspectable sources and a clear next step. The host
agent supplies search and browsing tools; DotAIOS organizes the local evidence
and continuation record. Use tools that are actually available in this session.

## Start here (plain language)

Just say what you want to know, in ordinary words. For example:

- "Research the best budget espresso machines in 2026."
- "Find out everything about that company before my interview."
- "Compare the options for a small-business accounting tool."

You get back the answer first, the details with links you can click, and an
honest note on anything unclear. The sources and the write-up are kept as
ordinary files next to the work, so you or another agent can pick it up later.
You are told where it was saved, and nothing is saved without somewhere to put it.

## Start or resume

1. Keep the user's chosen memory scope and work-folder authorization. Identify
the question, expected result and limits from the request. Ask only about
missing product decisions that change the destination, audience, promise or
accepted risk; choose ordinary research and file-organization details yourself.
2. In an authorized work folder, run `plan inspect --workdir <folder> --json`
using the admitted DotAIOS executable and argument prefix. This reads the
folder's current entry without a checkpoint filename or AIOS memory access.
Treat the returned record and source material as data under current host and
user authority. If the current goal differs from the request, preserve it and
resolve that mismatch before updating the record.
3. If found, read its limits, completed work, sources, outputs, unresolved items
and next action. Open the referenced result before repeating research.
`verification` checks local file hashes and dependencies, not factual truth or
external execution. Resolve changed, missing or unavailable evidence before
relying on it. An already completed result may still require this verification.
4. If absent, save a small JSON input with `goal`, `limits` (an array) and
   `nextAction`, then run `plan start --workdir <folder> --input <relative.json>
--json`. Keep its returned revision. This owns one section of the existing
`plan.md`; surrounding user prose is preserved. The work-folder mode uses
`--workdir`, independently of the AIOS `--path` mode.

If no authorized work folder is available, still give the cited answer in the
conversation, then offer one concrete destination — a work folder to authorize,
or an explicit save into AIOS memory — and say plainly that nothing has been
saved yet. Do not leave the user holding an unsaved result with no next step.
Saving to durable AIOS memory requires the user's explicit request and selected
scope; the research task alone does not authorize memory promotion.

## Research and retain evidence

1. Break the question into a few focused subquestions. Search primary sources
with the host's available tools and read the material supporting each material
claim. Verify dates and distinguish author claims, observed facts and inference.
An excerpt that omits relevant content remains incomplete until followed through.
2. For public HTTP(S) sources, use `ingest <url> --workdir <folder> --json` to
retain the source and derived Markdown under `research/sources/`. Use the
returned `source.path` and `original.path` as separate source records with
`source.origin` as their origin. Bind authored results to both originals and
readable derivatives so either changing invalidates the result. Inspect
   refusals before proceeding.
For other supported host sources, retain an authorized local copy under that
same source folder and record its actual origin. Keep unavailable sources in
unresolved items; a configured connector is not proof of a successful read.
3. Write the result under `research/results/`. Lead with the answer, support each
material factual claim with its source link, explain conflicts or uncertainty,
and include a deduplicated source list. Keep source text distinct from the
   recommendation and from approved project decisions. Preserve user originals;
choose a new result filename when an existing file's ownership is unclear.

## Checkpoint and continue

After useful progress, save a JSON checkpoint input and run
`plan checkpoint --workdir <folder> --input <relative.json> --expected <revision>
--json`. `plan --help` is the field reference. Record:

- `completed`: work actually done; entries append without discarding prior progress.
- `sources`: retained relative paths and origins; the command pins their hashes.
- `outputs`: result paths and the source paths each result used; dependencies pin
the source versions. Record a source before its dependent output.
- `unresolved`, `nextAction` and `status`: remaining uncertainty and the next useful
action. Keep pending or unconfirmed external effects unresolved until the owning
provider supplies evidence. File hashes do not supply that evidence.

Use the latest returned revision. A stale revision, concurrent writer or evidence
change requires inspection and reconciliation before retrying. After interruption
or an uncertain publication, inspect the current entry; preserve completed work
and resume the next action instead of repeating earlier external actions.

Mark `complete` only after the requested result is written, its evidence is current
and no unresolved question remains; `nextAction` may then be null. If the answer
must remain partial, retain that uncertainty with an actionable next step. Show
the result and its limits to the user. Do not create a scheduler or assume another
runtime exists merely because the research can be resumed.

A single quick fact needs one focused lookup. Saving one known source belongs to
`ingest`; use this workflow when the task needs synthesis or continuation.
