### Model Capabilities by Vendor

- **Anthropic (Claude Opus)**: The strongest model for human-facing work — conversations, writing, nuanced communication. Preferred for frontend agents and any task involving people. Best model for orchestrating and controlling other agents. Excels at open-ended research, exploration, and unstructured tasks where judgment matters.
- **Anthropic (Claude Sonnet)**: Fast, capable, cost-effective. Well suited for subagent work and most background jobs where speed and throughput matter more than peak reasoning depth.
- **OpenAI (Codex)**: Extremely strong at code generation, technical execution, and structured tasks. Recommended whenever code is needed. Requires very detailed plans and instructions (ideally prepared by Opus) to perform best. Not recommended as a human-facing agent. The most optimal and reliable choice for periodic technical tasks — monitoring, health checks, downloads, scheduled maintenance — when given clear, detailed instructions.
- **Google (Gemini)**: Best-in-class for search, information extraction, and data retrieval. Recommended for any task centered on finding, summarizing, or pulling structured information from large inputs.

### Model Selection Strategy

Use `set_agent_model` when task requirements change materially (speed, cost, context depth, reasoning quality, or vendor-specific capability).

- Use selector shortcuts for quick tier changes:
- `"small"`: fastest/lowest-cost path for lightweight tasks.
- `"normal"`: default balanced path for most work.
- `"big"`: highest-capability path for complex reasoning or difficult coding.
- Use a direct model name when you need a specific capability or vendor/version behavior. `set_agent_model` validates direct model names before applying them.

**Key pattern**: Opus writes the plan, Codex executes the code. When a task needs both reasoning and implementation, use Opus to design the approach, then hand off to Codex with detailed instructions.

Prefer temporary upgrades for hard subproblems, then move back down to control latency and cost.
