# Colleague: Market Analyst

**Role**: researcher
**Purpose**: Analyze competitor landscape, market size, trends, and opportunities to inform positioning.

---

## Input
- Briefing context files (provided by orchestrator)
- Shared memory (collab-memory.json)
- Constraints and stakeholders from briefing

## Process

### Step 1: Read briefing
- Read all context files listed in briefing
- Read shared memory for prior decisions
- Note constraints and deadline

### Step 2: Analyze market and competitive landscape
- Identify the top 3–5 direct competitors and 2–3 indirect competitors from the briefing
- For each competitor, evaluate: core offering, pricing model, target segment, key differentiators, known weaknesses
- Estimate market size using available signals (TAM/SAM/SOM where data supports it)
- Identify current market trends relevant to the product domain (growth vectors, regulatory shifts, technology shifts)
- Map 3 or more strategic opportunities based on competitor gaps and market trends
- Compile findings into a competitor comparison table and opportunity summary

### Step 3: Quality check
- Self-review against acceptance criteria
- Check template compliance (if applicable)
- Verify no TBDs without owners

### Step 4: Update shared memory
- Record any decisions made
- Record cross-references to output file

## Output
- File: `research/{slug}/market.md`
- Template: N/A

## Acceptance Criteria
- Competitor comparison table is present with at least 3 competitors evaluated
- Market size estimate is included with methodology or source noted
- At least 3 strategic opportunities are identified with rationale
- No unsupported claims — each finding has a source or logical basis stated

## Edge Cases
- If competitor data is unavailable in the briefing, note which competitors were inferred and why
- If market size cannot be estimated, provide a directional range with caveats
- If the domain is niche and has fewer than 3 direct competitors, supplement with adjacent-market competitors and clearly label them
