# Licences for apexmaps-geo This package is a **compilation of separately licensed boundary datasets**. There is no single licence covering all of it, so the terms below apply per file. The npm `license` field reads `(CC0-1.0 AND CC-BY-4.0)` because that is the closest machine-readable expression of the whole; this file is the authoritative detail. Every file has been processed from its source: simplified, quantized to TopoJSON, and in some cases given repaired or added identifier properties. The files are therefore derivative works, and the terms below apply to them as such. Each pack records its own source, licence, vintage and boundary policy in `manifest.json`, and the library exposes the same information at runtime through `ApexMaps.mapMeta(id)`. --- ## Natural Earth (public domain) **Files:** `world-countries-*.json`, `world-land-*.json`, `*-admin1-*.json` Source: Natural Earth 5.1.1, Natural Earth places its data in the public domain. No permission, fee or attribution is required, though crediting Natural Earth is appreciated. From the Natural Earth terms of use: > All versions of Natural Earth raster and vector map data found on this website > are in the public domain. You may use the maps in any manner, including > modifying the content and design, electronic dissemination, and offset > printing. The primary authors, Tom Patterson and Nathaniel Vaughn Kelso, and > all other contributors renounce all financial claim to the maps and invite you > to use them for personal, educational, and commercial purposes. Identifier note: Natural Earth publishes `ISO_A3` as `-99` for several countries whose overseas parts are separate features. Those values are repaired at build time; `manifest.json` records that this was done. ## US Census Bureau TIGER/Line (public domain) **Files:** `us-states-*.json`, `us-counties-*.json` Source: US Census Bureau TIGER/Line, via [us-atlas](https://github.com/topojson/us-atlas) 3.0 Works of the United States federal government are not subject to copyright protection in the United States (17 U.S.C. § 105) and are in the public domain. No attribution is required. Identifier note: TIGER geometry carries FIPS codes only. USPS state abbreviations are added at build time so the packs can be joined on the keys data actually uses. ## Eurostat GISCO NUTS (CC BY 4.0, with EuroGeographics terms) **Files:** `eu-nuts0-*.json`, `eu-nuts1-*.json`, `eu-nuts2-*.json`, `eu-nuts3-*.json` Source: Eurostat GISCO NUTS 2021, 1:20 million, Licensed under [Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International](https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) (CC BY 4.0). **This is the one part of this package that carries a mandatory attribution requirement.** Redistribution, including redistribution of derivative works, must credit: > © EuroGeographics for the administrative boundaries ApexMaps renders this string automatically whenever a NUTS pack is displayed, so a consumer of the library satisfies the requirement without doing anything. If you use these files outside ApexMaps, the attribution is your responsibility. The EuroGeographics terms for the administrative boundaries apply in addition to CC BY 4.0. See for Eurostat's own statement of the terms. --- ## Boundaries and disputed territories Boundary depiction follows each source's own editorial view and is not a political statement by the ApexCharts project. Natural Earth packs use its de facto boundaries; NUTS packs follow the Eurostat 2021 classification; US packs use Census legal boundaries. Each pack states its policy in `manifest.json` under `boundaries`. ## What is deliberately absent Datasets whose licences forbid commercial redistribution are not included and will not be. GADM is the recurring request and is non-commercial only, so it cannot ship here. Bring-your-own geometry is supported instead: pass GeoJSON or TopoJSON directly, or register it with `ApexMaps.registerMap()`.
