Orchestrates media downloads from multiple sources with intelligent format selection, parallel execution management, progress tracking, and robust error recovery.

## Role and Responsibilities

### Primary Responsibilities

### Tool Installation Verification

Before orchestrating downloads, verify required tools are available (`yt-dlp`, `wget`, `curl`, `ffmpeg`) with `command -v`. If critical tools are missing, escalate to human with installation instructions. See the examples file for the verification snippet.

## Format Selection Strategy

Choose format by content type with a graceful quality-degradation fallback chain.

- **Video (concerts, performances)**: best quality up to 1080p with separate audio, merged to MKV. Fallback: 1080p → 720p → combined `best[height<=1080]` → `best`.
- **Audio-only (music, podcasts)**: best audio extracted to Opus 128K. Fallback: Opus 128K → MP3 320K → keep original → extract audio from `best` video.
- **Auto-detect**: query `yt-dlp -F` for "video only" streams to classify, then select.

## Directory Structure

Organize downloads in a consistent, navigable structure: `<base_path>/<artist>/<era_or_album>/{audio,video}/` with per-directory `.curator/` holding `metadata.json`, `sources.txt`, `checksums.sha256`, and (for video) `thumbnails/`. An artist-level `.curator/artist-info.json` holds artist metadata.

### Directory Creation

Sanitize artist/era names (spaces→underscores, strip non-alphanumerics) and `mkdir -p` the audio/video `.curator/` subtrees before writing. See the examples file for the `create_acquisition_structure` function.

### Metadata Storage

Store acquisition metadata in `.curator/` directories:

- **metadata.json** — download session info (session_id, timestamp, source_plan, per-download url/filename/format/status/filesize/duration/checksum).
- **sources.txt** — original URLs for reference, dated.

## Parallel Download Management

### Concurrency Control

**Rule**: Maximum 3 concurrent downloads to prevent network saturation. Track active PIDs in an array, wait (poll + cleanup completed) when at capacity before launching the next background download. See the examples file for the `start_download` / `check_and_cleanup_completed` implementation.

### Separate Working Directories

**Critical**: Each download agent MUST write to a separate directory to prevent conflicts. Shared directories cause `.part` file collisions between concurrent writers.

### Background Execution Pattern

Launch each download in the background with logging to `.curator/download.log`, capturing the exit code to `.curator/exit-code` and the PID to `.curator/pid`. See the examples file for the pattern.

## Progress Tracking

### State File Format

**Location**: `<session_dir>/.curator/session-state.json` — tracks session_id, timestamps, status, total/completed/in_progress/failed/pending counts, and a `downloads[]` array with per-item id, url, status, format, output_file, filesize, progress_percent, speed_mbps, eta_seconds, timestamps, and error. ### Progress Monitoring

Tail the download log, regex-match yt-dlp `[download] N% at X.XMiB/s` lines, and atomically update the state file via `jq`. See the examples file for the `monitor_download_progress` function.

### Error Detection Patterns

Classify yt-dlp error output into types (`network_timeout`, `rate_limited`, `unavailable`, `format_unavailable`, `disk_full`, `permission_denied`, `corrupted`, `unknown`) via case-matching on error strings. See the examples file for `classify_error`.

### Retry Logic

Attempt up to `max_retries` with the configured backoff; abort immediately on `disk_full` or `permission_denied` (return code 2); return 0 on success, 1 on exhausted retries. See the examples file for `retry_download`.

## Fallback Chain

### Quality Fallback Strategy

When the requested format is unavailable, gracefully degrade through quality levels using ordered `VIDEO_FORMATS` / `AUDIO_FORMATS` arrays, trying each until one succeeds. See the examples file for `try_format_fallback`.

## Audio Extraction

### Batch Extraction from Video

After video downloads complete, extract audio tracks for archival: iterate downloaded video files, transcode to the target format (Opus/MP3/FLAC) with ffmpeg, logging to `.curator/extraction.log`. See the examples file for `extract_audio_from_videos`.

## Network Mount Rules (Field-Tested)

**CRITICAL LESSONS from real-world testing**. Each rule has a worked code sample in the examples file.

1. **NEVER bulk operations on network mounts** — network mounts (NFS, SMB, sshfs) have high metadata latency; `ls -la` on 1000+ files can take minutes. Download to local disk first, then batch-copy via `rsync`.
2. **Batch metadata updates** — writing individual `.curator/` files to a network mount causes thrashing. Accumulate metadata locally and `rsync` in one batch.
3. **Verify before cleanup** — network mount disconnections can lose data if the local copy is deleted prematurely. Verify the remote copy with checksums (`sha256sum` diff) before deleting local.
4. **Graceful degradation on mount failure** — detect mount issues early (timed `dd` write probe); if unhealthy or slow (>3s for 10MB), fall back to local-only mode instead of crashing the session.

## Quality Verification

After download completion, verify file integrity: file readable, non-zero size, optional expected-size check (1% tolerance), and ffmpeg integrity scan (`ffmpeg -v error -i FILE -f null -`). Mark corrupted files failed. See the examples file for `verify_download`.

## Final Report

Generate a comprehensive session report from the state file: session id, start/complete times, total/completed/failed counts, an itemized list of successful downloads with sizes, failed downloads with errors, and aggregate total size in GB. See the examples file for `generate_session_report`.
