# TODO - Pi-DCP Project

**Status**: Research complete with MAJOR FINDINGS - High-priority documentation needed

## 🔥 Critical Insight from Research

Pi-DCP + Cache Warming = Complementary Optimizations (NOT competing!)

Original concern about cache invalidation was based on naive caching assumptions. Production best practice (cache warming) is fully compatible with pi-dcp. This changes everything.

## High Priority Tasks (Documentation)

- [ ] **CRITICAL**: Add "Cache Warming Compatibility" section to README
  - Location: `README.md` - New section after Features
  - Content: Explain cache warming pattern and pi-dcp compatibility
  - Include: Production architecture diagram
  - Include: Cost comparison table (naive vs warming vs warming+dcp)
  - Include: When to use warning vs not
  - Code example: Cache warming implementation pattern

- [ ] **CRITICAL**: Update FAQ with cache warming info
  - Question: "How does pi-dcp affect prompt caching?"
  - Answer: Compatible with cache warming, complementary optimizations
  - Include: Decision framework (use both for long sessions)
  - Include: Link to full research findings

- [ ] **HIGH**: Add production examples section
  - Location: `README.md` or new `PRODUCTION.md`
  - Content: Real-world implementation patterns
  - Include: TypeScript code for cache warming + pi-dcp
  - Include: Metrics tracking examples
  - Include: Cost calculation formulas

- [ ] **HIGH**: Create cache warming best practices guide
  - Location: New file `CACHE-WARMING.md` or section in README
  - Content: How to implement optimal pattern
  - Include: Synchronous warm call pattern
  - Include: Minimal prompts (max_tokens=10)
  - Include: Error handling for warming failures
  - Include: Metrics to track (warm hits vs request hits)

## Medium Priority Tasks (Features)

- [ ] Add cache metrics to `/dcp-stats` command
  - Show: Estimated cache warming overhead
  - Show: Expected session savings with warming
  - Show: Recommendation to implement warming if not using

- [ ] Create session-level cost tracking
  - Track: Total tokens saved across session
  - Track: Estimated cost savings over time
  - Show: Long-term benefit of pruning (compounds over turns)

- [ ] Add cache warming recommendations
  - Detect: If user making multiple requests per turn
  - Recommend: Implement cache warming pattern
  - Provide: Code snippet for their language

## Low Priority Tasks (Future Enhancements)

- [ ] Implement auto-warming mode
  - Pi-DCP could handle cache warming internally
  - Opt-in feature via config
  - Would require integration with Pi's API calling mechanism

- [ ] Create cost calculator tool
  - Input: Session length, context size, pruning rate
  - Output: Estimated savings with different strategies
  - Compare: Naive vs warming vs warming+dcp

- [ ] Adaptive pruning based on cache performance
  - Monitor: Cache hit rates
  - Adjust: Pruning frequency dynamically
  - Goal: Maximize total session cost efficiency

## Completed Tasks

- ✅ Research how pi-dcp affects Claude's prompt caching feature
- ✅ Distill research content from `research/` directory into miniproject format
  - Created comprehensive research document (research-0ca58594)
  - Extracted key learnings (learning-455d01b5, learning-3d263626)
  - Removed `research/` directory after content migration
  - Updated memory structure documentation
  - **MAJOR UPDATE**: Discovered cache warming compatibility
  - Key findings:
    1. Cache warming is production standard (80% savings vs naive)
    2. Pi-DCP + warming = 81% savings (7-25% better than warming alone)
    3. Pruning overhead is one-time per warming call (minimal)
    4. Long sessions benefit most (25% additional savings at 100 turns)
    5. Complementary optimizations, not competing approaches
  - 11 authoritative sources cross-verified
  - HIGH confidence level
  - **Paradigm shift**: From "trade-off" to "force multiplier"

- ✅ Complete implementation of all 7 pruning steps
- ✅ Full refactoring into modular architecture
- ✅ Documentation updates (README.md, IMPLEMENTATION.md)
- ✅ Type safety verification
- ✅ Performance validation

## Notes

**CRITICAL INSIGHT**: The research fundamentally changes the value proposition of pi-dcp:

**Before Research**:
> "Pi-DCP saves tokens but breaks cache. Trade-off to consider."

**After Research**:
> "Pi-DCP + cache warming = optimal production pattern. Use both for maximum savings."

**Next Priority**: Update user-facing documentation to communicate this compatibility and provide implementation guidance for cache warming pattern.

**Long-term Vision**: Pi-DCP should actively recommend or even automate cache warming integration for users who would benefit from it.
