# Live `pi-session-compaction` interactive essay

This essay is meant to be read by expanding the parts you need. It answers the operator questions that matter before trusting the live `session_before_compact` hook.

**Current posture:** `pi-session-compaction` is the local live owner for custom `session_before_compact` summaries. It is installed as a Pi extension, but the active Pi process only sees it after `/reload`.

## 2. What is included into compaction?

- No independent subagent runtime.
- No loop/chain/workflow runtime.
- No Prompt Vault retrieval by this package.
- No package prompt bundle.
- No broad slash-command surface; the only package command is `/compact-focus`, which triggers the same guided compaction path.
- No second compaction owner; this package should be the only custom `session_before_compact` owner.
- No hidden persistent database writes from the compaction package itself.

## 3. What gets added without compaction?

After `/reload`, the live entrypoint does these things before any compaction occurs:

1. Registers input tracking for interactive user input.
   - This is in-memory only.
   - It helps later compaction recover slash commands and their arguments.
2. Registers the guarded `session_before_compact` handler.
3. Emits startup visibility through UI notification:

It does **not** add a compaction summary, files-touched manifest, or session branch entry until Pi actually emits `session_before_compact`.

<summary><strong>What about branch/tree summaries?</strong></summary>

The package has `session_before_tree` augmentation helpers, but they remain non-live. They can build branch-summary instructions with files-touched grounding, but the current live entrypoint does not register a `session_before_tree` hook.

So without compaction, branch-summary augmentation is not automatically added either.

## 4. What is configurable?

When locally installed, the live package path is the repo package path, so editing that file in the package affects the next reload/run. If the package is ever packed/published, the config must be included inside the installed extension directory.

## 5. Which knobs can I change interactively before compaction really happens?

## Four suggested custom compaction focus choices

Use one of these immediately before compaction when you want the summary to prime the next session toward a specific continuation posture.

The built-in `/compact` command is owned by Pi core and currently accepts free-text instructions directly. This package adds the companion `/compact-focus` command for the dropdown workflow: it opens a selector, then calls the same compaction path with the selected instructions.

### 1. Continue safely

Best when work is mid-stream and the next session should pick the smallest truthful next action without widening scope.

### 2. Verify live behavior

Best right after enabling a hook. This primes the summary toward smoke testing, observed proof, and rollback criteria.

### 3. Clean handoff

Best when there are unrelated dirty files or multiple package lanes. This primes the summary toward boundaries and ownership.

Best when the feature is implemented and you want the next session to prepare push/release without publishing accidentally.

Why this works: `/compact <customInstructions>` becomes a user compaction note and is preserved in the final essential-prompts block, so the generated summary carries the selected post-compaction intent forward.

# Five more questions worth answering

## 6. What model does compaction use?

Default behavior is:

That means the summarizer uses the active session model. If the active model supports reasoning, the latest branch thinking level is preserved as the compaction reasoning level.

For presets:

- `model` can be exact `provider/model`.
- `model` can be a bare model id.
- `model` can be comma-separated fallbacks.
- If the current model matches any candidate, it is preserved.
- Ambiguous bare model ids use provider priority inherited from prompt-template execution semantics:
  1. `openai-codex`
  2. `anthropic`
  3. `github-copilot`
  4. `openrouter`
- Candidate availability may use the host registry's credential-free `getAvailable()` view; request authentication stays inside the public host registry `complete()` path (Pi >= 0.84.0), and is never returned to the extension.

## 7. What happens when compaction fails?

Failure behavior is intentionally conservative:

| No model or host completion/auth failure for ordinary compaction | Return `undefined` so stock compaction can proceed. |
| Configured `defaultPreset` fails | Warn, then fall back to `current`. |
| Explicit preset request fails | Warn, then fall back to `current`. |
| Explicit preset request and fallback also fails | Return `{ cancel: true }` to avoid silently producing the wrong preset summary. |
| Abort signal fires | Return `{ cancel: true }`. |
| Unexpected handler error without explicit preset | Warn and let stock compaction proceed. |

This means ordinary compaction should degrade safely, while explicit preset requests avoid pretending success with the wrong model when the fallback path is also broken.

## 8. How do I verify the live hook?

## 10. What privacy or scope boundaries should I remember?

The package summarizes the branch entries Pi passes into `session_before_compact`; it does not go searching the filesystem by itself.

Files-touched context is derived from visible session/tool history, not from a fresh recursive repo scan. It can include exact file paths and commands that appeared in the session. If a session includes sensitive text, compaction may preserve it because its job is continuity.

Practical rule: do not put secrets in the session if you would not want them in the next-session summary.

## 11. What remains future/non-live?

- `session_before_tree` branch-summary augmentation remains non-live.
- There is no interactive UI form for editing `config.json` yet.
- There are no env-var controls yet.
- There is no runtime introspection API for counting existing `session_before_compact` handlers; the current cutover relies on package inventory and the registration guard.
- There is no package-local prompt-template execution or subagent runtime.

Useful future hardening would be:

1. a small `/session-compaction-status` command,
2. an operator form for editing presets safely,
3. a live smoke recipe that captures one real compaction event,
4. host-level handler introspection if Pi exposes it,
5. optional branch-summary augmentation as a separate guarded cutover.
