# Installing SkillLane

## Requirements

- Node.js >= 18.0.0 (for npm install and from-source)
- Python >= 3.10 (for pip install)

## npm (recommended)

```bash
npm install -g @talocode/skilllane
```

Verify installation:

```bash
skilllane --version
```

## pip

```bash
pip install talocode-skilllane
```

The Python package installs a `skilllane-py` CLI that talks to a running SkillLane API server. Start the server first:

```bash
skilllane serve
```

Then use the Python CLI:

```bash
skilllane-py health
skilllane-py list
```

## From source

```bash
git clone https://github.com/talocode/skilllane.git
cd skilllane
npm install
npm run build
npm link
```

`npm link` makes the `skilllane` command available globally.

## Verifying installation

```bash
# Check version
skilllane --version

# Run health checks
skilllane doctor

# Run the demo
skilllane demo
```

---

## Storage initialization

After installation, initialize the local storage directory:

```bash
skilllane init
```

This creates `~/.skilllane/` with the following structure:

~/.skilllane/
├── config.json
├── registry.json
├── skills/
└── runs/
```
