# Auto Mode Ask-Branch Classifier Progress

## Current Status

`@gotgenes/pi-permission-system` has a local fork implementation of ask-branch auto mode (started on branch `auto-mode-ask-classifier`; continued as dirty tree → organize branch).

The corrected architecture keeps `pi-permission-system` as the sole deterministic policy authority:

- deterministic `deny` decisions block without calling the classifier;
- deterministic `allow` decisions pass without calling the classifier;
- only deterministic `ask` decisions can enter auto mode;
- `autoMode.enabled: false` preserves the normal UI prompt;
- `autoMode.enabled: true` lets the classifier try to resolve the pending `ask` decision;
- classifier output `<block>no</block>` auto-approves the request;
- classifier output `<block>yes</block><reason>...</reason>` denies the request;
- classifier output `<ask>yes</ask><reason>...</reason>` abstains and returns to the normal UI prompt;
- transient HTTP/network failures and malformed output retry before fallback;
- exhausted retries follow `fallback: "ask"` or `fallback: "deny"`.

This explicitly avoids a hardcoded safe-tool allowlist.
Tool safety, path safety, sensitive path handling, shell aliases, and extension/MCP tool extraction remain owned by the permission system policy and extractor surfaces.

## Important Correction

A previous attempt temporarily added narrow global policy `allow` rules for a specific vision-config write.
That was the wrong fix: it bypassed the classifier instead of improving the ask-branch auto-mode behavior.

Those temporary allow rules were removed.
The local global config is back to ask-state routing for bash and external-directory checks:

The intended behavior is now: if the classifier can infer from context that the user explicitly authorized the current ask-state operation and no block rule applies, it may auto-approve.
If not, it should emit `<ask>yes</ask>` or otherwise abstain so the original Pi permission dialog can ask the user directly.

## Config Shape

`autoMode` is disabled by default:

## Implementation Notes

Key implementation files:

- `src/handlers/gates/auto-ask-decider.ts` defines the ask-branch decider contract.
- `src/handlers/gates/runner.ts` invokes the decider only for `check.state === "ask"` and falls back to the UI prompt on abstain/throw.
- `src/auto-mode-classifier.ts` implements Anthropic Messages-compatible classifier calls with bounded retry, fallback, observability, and explicit ask-abstain handling.
- `src/auto-mode-runtime-context.ts` extracts safe runtime context from `ExtensionContext`: current `cwd` and recent session entries.
- `src/auto-mode-request.ts` builds the structured classifier prompt and parses XML results.
- `src/capability-projection.ts` renders a compact capability projection for the classifier prompt so the model sees surface, operation, effects, command, and workdir in one stable block.
- `src/auto-mode-composition.ts` composes the decider from current config and runtime `ExtensionContext`.
- `src/index.ts` wires the real decider into `GateRunner`.
- `src/config-schema.ts`, `src/extension-config.ts`, and `schemas/permissions.schema.json` define and normalize `autoMode`.
- `src/config-loader.ts` preserves/replaces `autoMode` during global/project config merge.
- `src/auto-mode-observer.ts` defines safe event names and metadata for runtime logs.
- `src/auto-mode-eval.ts` evaluates golden cases through an injected classifier capability and returns deterministic summary/row/text reports.
- `test/auto-mode-request.test.ts` covers ctx-aware prompt construction and explicit ask parsing.
- `test/auto-mode-classifier-ask.test.ts` verifies `<ask>yes</ask>` returns `null` without retrying, so `GateRunner` can show the UI prompt.
- `test/auto-mode-classifier.test.ts` covers disabled mode, allow/deny decisions, retry/fallback, and setup failures.
- `README.md` documents ask-only semantics, default-disabled config, retry/fallback behavior, logs, offline eval, and the no-allowlist architecture.

## Classifier Prompt Behavior

The classifier prompt now includes:

- the fact that deterministic allow/deny decisions never reach the classifier;
- the current permission ask context: tool name, tool call id, source, matched permission, and permission prompt message;
- the action input, truncated for prompt safety;
- runtime context including current working directory;
- managed worktree metadata when supplied by the runtime boundary, including workspace kind, agent name, parent project root, and worktree root;
- path aliases when supplied by the runtime boundary, including lexical, project-relative, worktree-absolute, and parent-equivalent paths;
- recent session entries, truncated, so explicit user authorization in the conversation can inform the decision;
- an explicit three-way contract: approve, deny, or ask the user.

The prompt treats conversation text as untrusted context: it may clarify current intent, but must not override hard-block rules or permission-system deny rules.
Worktree metadata is descriptive context only: it helps the classifier recognize a managed worktree path as project-scoped, but deterministic deny rules and hard blocks still win.

## Worktree Path Portability

Forwarded permission requests may carry optional `portablePath` metadata.
When `parentEquivalent` is present, the serving node uses that parent-project path for recorded-authority checks instead of re-evaluating a temporary worktree absolute path as if it belonged to the parent cwd.
Legacy requests without `portablePath` keep the previous `(surface, value)` behavior and are not treated as trusted portable paths.

Session approval helpers also expose a pure project-scoped pattern derivation for portable worktree paths.
The helper requires both `parentCwd` and `projectRelative`, so approvals are scoped to a specific project identity rather than leaking across projects with the same relative path.

## Runtime Observability

Auto mode emits structured events through the existing permission-system logger.
Enable log streams in config when diagnosing runtime behavior:

Event names:

- `auto_mode.started` — an `ask` decision entered auto mode.
- `auto_mode.allowed` — classifier returned `<block>no</block>` and the pending ask was auto-approved.
- `auto_mode.denied` — classifier returned `<block>yes</block>` and the pending ask was denied.
- `auto_mode.ask` — classifier returned `<ask>yes</ask>` and the request returned to the normal UI prompt.
- `auto_mode.http_failure` — the classifier HTTP request failed, returned a non-2xx response, or threw before a parseable response.
- `auto_mode.parse_failure` — the model response did not contain parseable XML.
- `auto_mode.retry` — another classifier attempt will run before fallback.
- `auto_mode.setup_failure` — required runtime setup was missing, such as context, model, or auth.
- `auto_mode.fallback_ask` — retries/setup exhausted and `fallback: "ask"` returned to the normal UI prompt.
- `auto_mode.fallback_deny` — retries/setup exhausted and `fallback: "deny"` blocked the request.

Auto-mode events record safe metadata such as provider, model id, tool call id, tool name, source, and agent name.
They do not log API keys, auth headers, the full classifier system prompt, the full transcript, or full tool input.

## Golden Baseline and Offline Eval

The current golden suite covers 100 ask-branch scenarios across safe read-only operations, safe filtered inspection, safe local writes/builds, sensitive paths, secret exfiltration, dangerous bash, destructive filesystem actions, subprocess persistence, permission escalation, destructive git operations, external code/network actions, package-manager mutation, external-directory access, user-authorized local work, ambiguous user intent, session-state mutation, auto-mode bypass attempts, self-modification, and external system writes.

The offline eval harness in `src/auto-mode-eval.ts` runs these cases through a caller-supplied classifier capability.
It does not construct a provider, model registry, HTTP client, or Pi `ExtensionContext`.
Unit tests use fake classifiers only and summarize `total`, `passed`, `failed`, `falseAllow`, and `falseBlock` with stable per-case rows.

Live model evaluation is intentionally not a default test path.
Running a real configured provider/model must be an explicit, approved action that supplies the live classifier capability at the boundary.

These cases are a quality baseline for the single-stage ask-branch classifier.
They are not a claim of Claude Code parity and do not implement Stage 2.
Stage 2 should build on this baseline with a broader corpus and explicit transcript/user-intent capability.

## Latest Verification

Focused Windows verification passed after ctx-aware prompt and explicit ask fallback work:

The local `mise` tasks `permission-system:dev`, `permission-system:affected`, `permission-system:release`, `permission-system:parity`, and `permission-system:verify` define the current package-scoped validation foundation.

## Local Install State

The local package path was previously installed globally into Pi:

Because the installed source is the local path, code edits in this working tree are picked up after restarting/reloading Pi.
Runtime behavior still requires a Pi session reload/restart before manual testing.

## Suggested Manual Smoke Tests

After restarting/reloading Pi, test two paths.

First, a harmless read-only ask-state command:

Expected behavior:

- global policy maps `bash "*"` to `ask`;
- auto mode receives that `ask` decision;
- the classifier should auto-approve the harmless read-only command with `<block>no</block>`;
- no permission prompt should appear if the model call succeeds;
- if the model/auth/network/parser fails, `fallback: "ask"` returns to the normal UI prompt.

Second, an explicitly authorized external config write:

Expected behavior:

- classifier sees recent user authorization in runtime context;
- if it can safely approve, it returns `<block>no</block>`;
- if it cannot safely approve, it returns `<ask>yes</ask>` or abstains, and the normal Pi permission dialog appears;
- it should not rely on a hardcoded allowlist or temporary global policy allow rule.

## Follow-Ups

- Restart Pi and rerun the manual smoke tests.
- If behavior is surprising, enable `debugLog` and inspect `~/.pi/agent/extensions/pi-permission-system/logs/pi-permission-system-debug.jsonl`.
- Add broader Linux/CI verification before proposing upstream PR.
- Treat live model evaluation as a separately approved action; the checked-in eval harness stays offline by default.
- Treat Stage 2 as a follow-up after runtime logs, golden cases, and offline eval reports are stable.
