# Provider Comparator

Compare the connector schema against provider's official API documentation. This is the **KEY BUG FINDER** in Phase 3.

**TWO TYPES OF VALIDATION:**

| Type | Question | What We Check |
|------|----------|---------------|
| **Functional** | "Will the API call work?" | Params exist, types match, names correct |
| **Structural** | "Does our schema accurately describe the provider's interface?" | Input coverage, object shapes, action naming |

**CRITICAL: Process ACTION-BY-ACTION to ensure 100% coverage in a single run.**

---

## Pre-Requisite: Research Data MUST Exist

**FAIL FAST if research data doesn't exist:**

```bash
# Check research data exists
ls .connector-dev/{provider}/research/endpoints/
# If missing, STOP and instruct user:
"Research data not found. Run /connector:research {provider} first to collect API schemas."
```

**Why?** WebFetch cannot reliably parse JS-rendered API docs (Redoc, ReadMe, Swagger UI). The research phase uses Playwright MCP to properly render and extract all parameters.

**Primary source:** `.connector-dev/{provider}/research/endpoints/resources/{resource}.yaml`
**Fallback only:** Live WebSearch (for verification, not primary data)

## Why This Agent Matters

### Functional Bugs (Will API Fail?)

| Bug Type | Example | Impact |
|----------|---------|--------|
| Missing pagination param | `cursor` not in schema | Can't paginate past first page |
| Missing filter param | `updated_after` not in schema | Can't filter by date |
| Type mismatch | Schema says `string`, provider says `integer` | Runtime failures |
| Missing enum value | `status` missing `archived` value | Valid data rejected |
| Name mismatch | We use `from_date`, provider uses `start_date` | 400 errors |
| Missing companion action | `polling_onboard` exists but no `polling_result` | Workflow broken |

### Structural Bugs (Schema Doesn't Match Provider Interface)

| Bug Type | Example | Impact |
|----------|---------|--------|
| **Hidden args field** | `user_attributes.first_name` in args but no input for it | Field silently missing from API |
| **Flat-to-nested mismatch** | Input `email` assembled into `user_attributes: {email}` | Users can't see object structure |
| **Missing object input** | Provider expects `{work_location: {id: X}}`, we have flat `work_location_id` | Schema doesn't represent real API shape |
| **Action name mismatch** | We use `create_employee`, provider calls it `onboard_employee` | Confusing, inconsistent naming |
| **Unexposed nested fields** | Provider's `frequency_attributes` has 5 fields, we expose 2 | Incomplete coverage hidden from users |

---

## Strict Verification Rules

### Rule 1: NEVER Trust Existing Schema

❌ **Wrong**: "We have `from_date`, provider has date param, looks good"
✅ **Right**: "We have `from_date`, provider docs say `start_date` → NAME MISMATCH"

For EVERY param in our schema:
1. Find the exact param in provider docs
2. Verify name matches EXACTLY (case-sensitive)
3. Verify type matches (string vs number vs array vs object)
4. Verify required flag matches
5. If ANY mismatch → flag it

### Rule 2: Type Checking is STRICT

| Our Type | Provider Type | Verdict |
|----------|---------------|---------|
| `string` | `string` | ✅ Match |
| `string` | `integer` | ❌ TYPE MISMATCH (HIGH) |
| `string` | `number` | ❌ TYPE MISMATCH (HIGH) |
| `string` | `array` | ❌ TYPE MISMATCH (HIGH) |
| `number` | `integer` | ⚠️ TYPE MISMATCH (MEDIUM) - integer is more specific |
| `integer` | `number` | ✅ Match (integer is subset of number) |
| `string` | `string[]` | ❌ TYPE MISMATCH (HIGH) - should be array |

### Rule 3: Missing Companion Actions are BLOCKING

If we have a polling/async action, the companion MUST exist:

| If we have | Must also have | Severity if missing |
|------------|----------------|---------------------|
| `polling_onboard_employee` | `polling_onboard_result` | **BLOCKING** |
| `create_async_*` | `get_async_*_status` | **BLOCKING** |
| `initiate_*` | `complete_*` or `status_*` | **BLOCKING** |
| `upload_*` | `get_upload_status` | **BLOCKING** |

### Rule 4: Param Name Mismatches are HIGH

| Our Name | Provider Name | Verdict |
|----------|---------------|---------|
| `from_date` | `start_date` | ❌ NAME MISMATCH (HIGH) |
| `to_date` | `end_date` | ❌ NAME MISMATCH (HIGH) |
| `team_id` | `teams` | ❌ NAME MISMATCH (HIGH) + TYPE MISMATCH |

---

## Structural Validation Rules (NEW)

### Rule 5: Input-to-Args Coverage (BLOCKING)

**Every field constructed in `args` MUST trace back to an exposed `input`.**

```yaml
# BAD — user_attributes.first_name is constructed but no input exists
inputs:
  - name: email
    type: string
steps:
  - functionId: makeHttpRequest
    args:
      body:
        user_attributes:
          email: "$.inputs.email"
          first_name: "John"  # ❌ HARDCODED - no input!
```

**Check:**
1. Parse all `args` in every step function
2. Find all leaf values that reference `$.inputs.*`
3. Find all leaf values that are hardcoded or missing
4. For each hardcoded value in a provider-documented field → **BLOCKING: HIDDEN FIELD**

```
❌ BLOCKING: Hidden field in args
   Action: create_employee
   Path: args.body.user_attributes.first_name
   Issue: Hardcoded value "John" — no input exposes this field
   Provider expects: first_name (string, required)
```

### Rule 6: Object Shape Matching (HIGH)

**If provider expects a nested object, our inputs should reflect that structure.**

```yaml
# Provider expects:
{
  "user_attributes": {
    "email": "...",
    "first_name": "...",
    "custom_fields": { "field1": "..." }
  }
}
# BAD — flat inputs assembled silently
inputs:
  - name: email          # Flat
  - name: first_name     # Flat
  - name: custom_field1  # Flat
# GOOD — object input matches provider shape
inputs:
  - name: user_attributes
    type: object
    fields:
      - name: email
      - name: first_name
      - name: custom_fields
        type: object
```

**Check:**
1. For each nested object in provider docs (depth > 1)
2. Check if we have an object-type input OR clearly documented flat-to-nested assembly
3. If flat inputs silently assembled → **HIGH: OBJECT SHAPE MISMATCH**

```
⚠️ HIGH: Object shape mismatch
   Action: create_employee
   Provider expects: user_attributes (object with 5 fields)
   Our schema: Flat inputs (email, first_name) assembled in args
   Issue: Users can't see the real object structure
   Recommendation: Add object-type input or document assembly
```

### Rule 7: Action Name Convention (MEDIUM)

**Our action names should match provider's operation naming.**

| Our Name | Provider Operation | Verdict |
|----------|-------------------|---------|
| `create_employee` | `POST /employees` | ✅ OK |
| `create_employee` | `onboardEmployee` | ⚠️ MEDIUM: Consider `onboard_employee` |
| `list_employees` | `getEmployees` | ✅ OK (list/get are equivalent) |
| `polling_onboard_employee` | `initiateOnboarding` | ⚠️ MEDIUM: Consider `initiate_onboarding` |

**Check:**
1. Extract provider's operation name from docs (operationId, endpoint name)
2. Compare with our actionId
3. If significantly different → **MEDIUM: ACTION NAME MISMATCH**

### Rule 8: Nested Object Input Exposure (HIGH)

**If provider documents a nested object with multiple fields, ALL fields must be exposed.**

```yaml
# Provider docs show:
frequency_attributes:
  - type: string (required)
  - interval: integer (required)
  - day_of_week: string (optional)
  - day_of_month: integer (optional)
  - start_date: string (optional)
# BAD — only 2 of 5 fields exposed
inputs:
  - name: frequency_type
  - name: frequency_interval
# GOOD — all fields exposed
inputs:
  - name: frequency_attributes
    type: object
    fields:
      - name: type
      - name: interval
      - name: day_of_week
      - name: day_of_month
      - name: start_date
```

**Check:**
1. For each nested object in provider docs
2. Count provider's documented fields
3. Count our exposed fields (in inputs)
4. If our count < provider count → **HIGH: UNEXPOSED NESTED FIELDS**

```
⚠️ HIGH: Unexposed nested fields
   Action: create_employee
   Object: frequency_attributes
   Provider fields: 5 (type, interval, day_of_week, day_of_month, start_date)
   Our inputs: 2 (frequency_type, frequency_interval)
   Missing: day_of_week, day_of_month, start_date
```

---

## Execution Flow — ACTION-BY-ACTION

### Step 0: Verify Research Data Exists (FAIL FAST)

```bash
# MUST exist before proceeding
ls .connector-dev/{provider}/research/endpoints/resources/
# If not found:
echo "ERROR: Research data not found."
echo "Run: /connector:research {provider}"
exit 1
```

### Step 1: Initialize Tracking

```bash
mkdir -p .connector-dev/{provider}/validation/shards
```

### Step 2: Load Research Data

```bash
# Read all resource research files
for file in .connector-dev/{provider}/research/endpoints/resources/*.yaml; do
  # Extract endpoints and params from research
done
```

### Step 3: Process FILE-BY-FILE, ACTION-BY-ACTION

```
FOR each partial file (in order):
  1. Read the partial file
  2. Extract list of actions in this file
  FOR each action (in order):
    a. SKIP if already in shards/ (resume support)
    b. Extract action details from OUR schema:
       - actionId, actionType, URL, method
       - All inputs with names, types, locations, required flags
    c. Load RESEARCH DATA for this endpoint:
       - Read from .connector-dev/{provider}/research/endpoints/resources/{resource}.yaml
       - Find matching endpoint by URL pattern
    d. If research data missing for this endpoint:
       - Use RIGOROUS MULTI-TOOL FALLBACK (see "Live Doc Fallback" section)
       - Try: WebFetch → Playwright snapshot → Playwright evaluate
       - Extract into STRUCTURED FORMAT (not ad-hoc)
       - Run INVERSE CHECK (both directions)
       - Save extraction to shard for evidence
    e. FUNCTIONAL VALIDATION (every param):
       FOR each param in OUR schema:
         - Find exact match in provider params
         - Verify name matches EXACTLY
         - Verify type matches
         - Verify required flag
         - Flag ANY mismatch
       FOR each param in PROVIDER docs:
         - Check if we have it
         - If missing → MISSING PARAM finding
    f. STRUCTURAL VALIDATION (NEW):
       f1. Input-to-Args Coverage:
           - Parse all args in step functions
           - Find all $.inputs.* references
           - Find hardcoded values in provider-documented fields
           - If field in args but no input → BLOCKING: HIDDEN FIELD
       f2. Object Shape Matching:
           - For each nested object in provider docs
           - Check if we have object-type input OR flat inputs
           - If flat inputs assembled silently → HIGH: OBJECT SHAPE MISMATCH
       f3. Action Name Convention:
           - Extract provider's operation name
           - Compare with our actionId
           - If significantly different → MEDIUM: ACTION NAME MISMATCH
       f4. Nested Object Input Exposure:
           - For each nested object in provider docs
           - Count provider fields vs our exposed inputs
           - If our count < provider count → HIGH: UNEXPOSED NESTED FIELDS
    g. Run param-family sweeps (if LIST/GET):
       - Pagination sweep
       - Filter sweep
       - Sort sweep
       - Select sweep
       - Enum sweep
    h. Check companion actions:
       - If polling/async action, verify companion exists
       - Missing companion → BLOCKING
    i. WRITE findings to shard file IMMEDIATELY:
       .connector-dev/{provider}/validation/shards/{actionId}.json
  END FOR (actions)
END FOR (files)
```

### Step 5: Aggregate All Shards

After all actions processed, combine into final report.

---

## Live Doc Fallback — Rigorous Multi-Tool Strategy

When research data is missing, use this RIGOROUS fallback chain to extract params with the SAME QUALITY as the research phase. **Don't skim — extract EVERYTHING.**

### Fallback Tool Chain (try in order, stop when content found)

| Step | Tool | When to Use |
|------|------|-------------|
| 1 | `WebFetch` | Always try first — fast, handles most static docs |
| 2 | Playwright `browser_snapshot` | If Step 1 returns empty/nav-only (JS-rendered page) |
| 3 | Playwright `browser_evaluate` | For interactive elements, dropdowns, expandable sections |

**Detection of Step 1 failure:** Content has no parameter names, only nav links, or body under 500 chars.

### Step 1: WebFetch (fastest)

```
WebFetch(doc_url, "Extract all API parameters with their names, types, required flags, and descriptions")
```

### Step 2: Playwright Snapshot (JS-rendered docs)

```
browser_navigate: https://developer.provider.com/api/employees
browser_snapshot: capture full accessibility tree
browser_click: expand "Parameters", "Request Body", "Query Parameters" sections
browser_snapshot: capture expanded content
```

### Step 3: Playwright Evaluate (interactive extraction)

```javascript
browser_evaluate(`({
  params: [...document.querySelectorAll('[class*="param"], [class*="field"], tr')]
    .map(el => ({
      name: el.querySelector('[class*="name"]')?.textContent?.trim(),
      type: el.querySelector('[class*="type"]')?.textContent?.trim(),
      required: el.textContent?.includes('required'),
      description: el.querySelector('[class*="desc"]')?.textContent?.trim()
    }))
    .filter(p => p.name),
  title: document.title
})`)
```

---

## STRUCTURED EXTRACTION — Don't Just Skim

When using live fallback, extract params INTO A STRUCTURED FORMAT before comparing:

```json
{
  "endpoint": "/api/v1/employees",
  "method": "GET",
  "extractedAt": "2026-05-26T10:00:00Z",
  "source": "live_fallback",
  "toolUsed": "playwright_snapshot",
  "params": [
    {
      "name": "page",
      "location": "query",
      "type": "integer",
      "required": false,
      "description": "Page number for pagination",
      "docQuote": "page (integer, optional) — page number"
    },
    {
      "name": "per_page",
      "location": "query",
      "type": "integer",
      "required": false,
      "description": "Items per page",
      "docQuote": "per_page (integer, optional) — items per page, default 25"
    }
  ]
}
```

**SAVE this extraction** to the shard file so we have evidence of what we found.

---

## INVERSE CHECK — Bidirectional Validation (CRITICAL)

The live fallback MUST do BOTH directions of comparison:

### Direction 1: Schema → Docs (Are our params valid?)

```
FOR each param in OUR SCHEMA:
  - Find exact match in extracted provider params
  - Verify name matches EXACTLY (case-sensitive)
  - Verify type matches
  - If NOT found → FLAG: "Extra param in schema (not in docs)"
```

### Direction 2: Docs → Schema (Are we missing params?)

```
FOR each param in PROVIDER DOCS:
  - Find match in our schema
  - If NOT found → FLAG: "Missing param" with severity:
    - required=true → BLOCKING
    - pagination/cursor/page → BLOCKING
    - filter/sort → HIGH
    - optional → MEDIUM
```

**WHY INVERSE CHECK MATTERS:**
Without Direction 2, we only validate what we have — we never discover what we're missing.
This is exactly why Grafana issues were missed: we didn't systematically check "what does provider have that we don't?"

---

## Minimum Extraction Checklist

Before marking an action as "validated via live fallback", verify you extracted:

- [ ] ALL query parameters (including pagination: page, per_page, cursor, offset, limit)
- [ ] ALL path parameters
- [ ] ALL request body fields (including nested objects)
- [ ] ALL header parameters (custom headers)
- [ ] Parameter types (string, integer, boolean, array, object)
- [ ] Required flags
- [ ] Default values (if documented)
- [ ] Enum values (if documented)

**If ANY of these categories are empty but the endpoint type suggests they should exist, dig deeper:**
- LIST endpoint with no pagination params? → Dig deeper
- CREATE endpoint with no body params? → Dig deeper
- GET endpoint with no path params? → Verify URL structure

---

## Live Fallback Quality Gate

After live extraction, run this quality check:

```
QUALITY_CHECK:
  params_extracted: >= 3 for LIST/CREATE, >= 1 for GET/DELETE
  has_pagination: true for LIST endpoints
  has_path_params: true for single-resource endpoints (GET/UPDATE/DELETE)
  inverse_check_done: REQUIRED
IF quality_check FAILS:
  - Try next tool in fallback chain
  - If all tools exhausted → FLAG as "incomplete_extraction" in shard
```

---

## Severity Classification

```
BLOCKING (must fix before testing):
  FUNCTIONAL:
    - Missing companion action (polling result, async status)
    - Missing pagination params
    - Type mismatch (string vs number vs array)
    - Name mismatch (wrong param name)
    - Missing required params
  STRUCTURAL:
    - Hidden args field (field in args but no input)
    - Missing required nested object fields
HIGH:
  FUNCTIONAL:
    - Missing filter params
    - Missing sort params
    - Missing select/expand params
    - Enum mismatches
  STRUCTURAL:
    - Object shape mismatch (flat inputs for nested object)
    - Unexposed nested fields (provider has more fields)
MEDIUM:
  FUNCTIONAL:
    - Missing secondary optional params
    - Description mismatches
  STRUCTURAL:
    - Action name mismatch (our name vs provider operation)
LOW:
  - Deprecated params we don't have
  - Extra params (we have, provider doesn't document)
```

---

## Resume Support

If agent is interrupted:

1. Check `.connector-dev/{provider}/validation/shards/` for completed actions
2. Skip actions that already have shard files
3. Continue from where it left off
4. Re-run aggregation at end

```bash
# Force fresh run:
rm -rf .connector-dev/{provider}/validation/shards/
```

## Rules

### Functional Validation
1. **FAIL FAST if no research data** — don't proceed without it (use live fallback if needed)
2. **NEVER trust existing schema** — verify every param name and type
3. **Type checking is STRICT** — string ≠ number ≠ array
4. **Name mismatches are HIGH** — wrong names cause 400 errors
5. **Missing companions are BLOCKING** — async workflows break

### Structural Validation
6. **Every args field needs an input** — hidden fields are BLOCKING
7. **Object shapes must match** — flat-to-nested assembly is HIGH
8. **All nested fields must be exposed** — unexposed fields are HIGH
9. **Action names should match provider** — mismatches are MEDIUM

### Live Fallback Quality (NEW)
10. **Multi-tool fallback chain** — WebFetch → Playwright snapshot → Playwright evaluate
11. **Structured extraction required** — don't skim, extract into JSON format
12. **INVERSE CHECK is MANDATORY** — check BOTH directions (schema→docs AND docs→schema)
13. **Quality gate before proceeding** — verify extraction completeness
14. **Save extraction evidence** — include extracted params in shard file

### Process
15. **Write shard after each action** — progress is always saved
16. **Every finding MUST have docQuote** — proves we saw it in provider docs
17. **Separate functional vs structural** — both types in every shard

---

## Integration

After this agent completes:
1. Per-action shards in `.connector-dev/{provider}/validation/shards/`
2. Aggregated report in `.connector-dev/{provider}/validation/provider-comparison.json`
3. **BLOCKING findings (functional OR structural) must be fixed before Phase 4**
4. Report available for human review

### Gate Check

```
Phase 4 can proceed ONLY if:
  - Functional BLOCKING = 0
  - Structural BLOCKING = 0
HIGH findings are logged but don't block.
MEDIUM findings are informational.
```

Next: Phase 4 (Action Testing) can only proceed if no BLOCKING findings remain.
