# N-API Quick Start Guide

**TL;DR**: N-API (napi-rs) is likely the better choice for agentic-jujutsu. Here's why and how to get started.

## Why N-API > WASM for This Project

### The Problem We're Hitting

**Current WASM approach has 58 compilation errors** when trying to export `JJWrapper`:

```

**Root cause**: wasm_bindgen can't export:
- Async methods with custom error types
- Methods returning `Result<T, CustomError>`
- Methods with complex Rust types

**Impact**: We can only export simple getters/setters. No real functionality.

### What N-API Solves

With napi-rs, **ALL** of these work out of the box:

**Eliminates process spawning entirely.**

### Step 1: Add Dependencies (5 minutes)

## Decision Points

### Choose N-API if:
✅ You need async/await support
✅ You need complex Rust types in JavaScript
✅ Performance matters (even 1.6% adds up)
✅ You want auto-generated TypeScript types
✅ You don't need browser support
✅ You're okay with 2MB binaries per platform

### Keep WASM if:
❌ You need browser support (we don't)
❌ You need universal 90KB binary (we need functionality)
❌ You only need simple sync methods (we need async)
❌ You can't run CI for 5-6 platforms (we can)

**For agentic-jujutsu: N-API is the clear winner.**

### Option A: Go with N-API (Recommended)
1. Approve migration to N-API
2. Create `napi` branch
3. Start Phase 1 proof of concept
4. Review results in 1-2 days
5. Proceed with full migration

### Option B: Fix WASM Issues
1. Accept limited functionality (no async methods)
2. Create manual Promise wrappers for all methods
3. Manually write TypeScript types
4. Continue with current approach
5. Live with 25x slower boundary crossing

### Option C: Hybrid Approach
1. Use N-API for Node.js (primary)
2. Keep WASM for future browser support (secondary)
3. Maintain two code paths
4. Higher complexity, better coverage

## Recommendation

**🟢 Proceed with N-API migration (Option A)**

**Rationale**:
- Solves compilation errors (58 errors → 0 errors)
- Enables full async/await API
- Better performance (25x faster boundary)
- Auto-generated TypeScript types
- Industry-standard approach (SWC, Rspack, Biome)
- No downside for our use case (Node.js-only)

**Timeline**: 1-2 weeks to full production release
**Risk**: Low (proven technology, extensive ecosystem)
**Benefit**: High (unblocks full functionality, better DX)
