`pkc-js` is the TypeScript SDK for PKC (Public Key Communities), a serverless, decentralized social protocol built on IPFS, IPNS, and libp2p pubsub. It powers all PKC clients: CLI, Electron desktop, and web.

### Glossary:

- CID: https://docs.ipfs.io/concepts/content-addressing/
- IPNS: https://docs.ipfs.io/concepts/ipns/#example-ipns-setup-with-cli
- IPNS name: hash of a public key, the private key is used by community owners for signing IPNS records, and by authors for signing posts and comments
- Pubsub topic: the string to publish/subscribe to in the pubsub https://github.com/ipfs/js-ipfs/blob/master/docs/core-api/PUBSUB.md#ipfspubsubsubscribetopic-handler-options and https://github.com/libp2p/specs/blob/master/pubsub/gossipsub/gossipsub-v1.0.md#topic-membership
- IPNS record: https://github.com/ipfs/specs/blob/master/IPNS.md#ipns-record
- IPNS signature: https://github.com/ipfs/notes/issues/249
- PKC signature types: https://github.com/pkcprotocol/pkc-js/blob/master/docs/signatures.md
- PKC encryption types: https://github.com/pkcprotocol/pkc-js/blob/master/docs/encryption.md

Note: IPFS files are immutable, fetched by their CID, which is a hash of their content. IPNS records are mutable, fetched by their IPNS name, which is the hash of a public key. The private key's owner can update the content. Always use IPFS files over IPNS records when possible because they are much faster to fetch.

### Schema:

```js
Address: string // a PKC author, community or multisub "address" can be a crypto domain like memes.bso, an IPNS name, an ethereum address, etc.
Publication {
  author: Author
  communityPublicKey: string // IPNS public key of the community this publication is directed to
  communityName?: string // optional crypto domain name of the community (e.g. 'memes.bso')
  // note: communityAddress is available as a convenience instance property at runtime, but is not part of the wire format
  timestamp: number // number in seconds
  signature: Signature // sign immutable fields like author, title, content, timestamp to prevent tampering
  protocolVersion: '1.0.0' // semantic version of the protocol https://semver.org/
}
Comment extends Publication /* (IPFS file) */ {
  parentCid?: string // same as postCid for top level comments, undefined for posts
  previousCid?: string // each comment/post is a linked list of other comments/posts with same comment.depth and comment.parentCid, undefined if first comment in list
  postCid?: string // helps faster loading post info for reply direct linking, undefined for posts, a post can't know its own CID
  depth: number // 0 = post, 1 = top level reply, 2+ = nested reply
  thumbnailUrl?: string // optionally fetched by community owner, some web pages have thumbnail urls in their meta tags https://moz.com/blog/meta-data-templates-123
## PKC API
The PKC API for reading and writing to and from communities.
### `PKC(pkcOptions)`
> Create a PKC instance.
#### Parameters
| Name | Type | Description |
| ---- | ---- | ----------- |
| pkcOptions | `PKCOptions` | Options for the PKC instance |
##### PKCOptions
An object which may have the following keys:
| Name | Type | Default | Description |
| ---- | ---- | ------- | ----------- |
| ipfsGatewayUrls | `string[]` or `undefined` | `['https://ipfsgateway.xyz', 'https://gateway.plebpubsub.xyz', 'https://gateway.forumindex.com']` | Optional URLs of IPFS gateways. Gateway readers have no push channel: a new community record only becomes visible when the gateway's IPNS cache for that name expires (the record's ttl, `publishInterval` = 20s by default, or the operator's `Ipns.MaxCacheTTL` if lower) and pkc-js re-polls at that moment, so expect up to one ttl of update latency (about 10s on average) against sub-second delivery over `kuboRpcClientsOptions` or `libp2pJsClientsOptions`, which receive records over IPNS-over-pubsub. Prefer those transports when the environment allows it and use gateways as a fallback. |
| kuboRpcClientsOptions | `(string \| KuboRpcClientOptions)[]` or `undefined` | `undefined` | Optional URLs of Kubo IPFS APIs or [KuboRpcClientOptions](https://www.npmjs.com/package/kubo-rpc-client#options). Use `'http://localhost:5001/api/v0'` to point at a local Kubo node. Cannot be combined with `libp2pJsClientsOptions`. |
| pubsubKuboRpcClientsOptions | `(string \| KuboRpcClientOptions)[]` or `undefined` | `[{url: 'https://pubsubprovider.xyz/api/v0'}, {url: 'https://plebpubsub.xyz/api/v0'}]` | Optional URLs or [KuboRpcClientOptions](https://www.npmjs.com/package/kubo-rpc-client#options) used for pubsub publishing when `kuboRpcClientsOptions` isn't available, like in the browser |
| pkcRpcClientsOptions | `string[]` or `undefined` | `undefined` | Optional websocket URLs of PKC RPC servers, required to run a community from a browser/electron/webview |
| httpRoutersOptions | `string[]` or `undefined` | `['https://peers.pleb.bot', 'https://routing.lol', 'https://peers.forumindex.com', 'https://peers.plebpubsub.xyz', 'https://routerofbitsocial.xyz', 'https://bsotracker.online']` | URLs of HTTP delegated-routing endpoints used by `libp2pJsClientsOptions` for content/peer routing and IPNS lookups. Each URL must start with `http://` or `https://`. |
| libp2pJsClientsOptions | `Array<{key: string, libp2pOptions?: Partial<Libp2pOptions>, heliaOptions?: Partial<HeliaOptions>, blockstoreOptions?: {maxBytes?: number, lowWaterRatio?: number}}>` or `undefined` | `undefined` | Optional in-process libp2p/Helia client. When set, replaces `kuboRpcClientsOptions` and `pubsubKuboRpcClientsOptions` (which are then ignored). At most one entry; `key` is a unique identifier. `libp2pOptions` is forwarded to [Helia's libp2p](https://github.com/ipfs/helia) (e.g. `connectionGater`, `services`, transports), `heliaOptions` to [Helia](https://github.com/ipfs/helia) (e.g. `blockstore`, `blockBrokers`; a caller-supplied `blockBrokers` replaces the default bitswap broker, and `http` is not supported since the client is composed without Helia's HTTP components). Requires `httpRoutersOptions` to be set. By default WebRTC and WebTransport dials are rejected so nodes (notably in the browser) connect over WebSocket(/WSS); pass your own `libp2pOptions.connectionGater` to override this (it fully replaces the default gater). `blockstoreOptions` tunes the block cache described below. |
| dataPath | `string` or `undefined` | `.pkc` folder in the current working directory | (Node only) Optional folder path to create/resume the user and community databases |
| resolveAuthorNames | `boolean` or `undefined` | `true` | Optionally disable resolving crypto domain author names, which can be done lazily later to save time |
| nameResolvers | `NameResolver[]` or `undefined` | `undefined` | Custom resolvers for crypto domain names. Each resolver: `{key, resolve, canResolve, provider, destroy?}`. |
| validatePages | `boolean` or `undefined` | `true` | If `false`, pages returned in `commentUpdate` / `Community` / `getPage` are not validated. Use only when you trust the source. |
| userAgent | `string` or `undefined` | `/pkc-js:<version>/` | User-agent string sent on outgoing HTTP requests. |
| challenges | `Record<string, ChallengeFileFactory>` or `undefined` | `undefined` | Instance-level challenge registry; keys shadow built-in challenges with the same name. See [docs/protocol/challenge-flow.md](docs/protocol/challenge-flow.md). |
#### Returns
| Type | Description |
| -------- | -------- |
| `Promise<PKC>` | A `PKC` instance |
#### Example
```js
const PKC = require('@pkcprotocol/pkc-js')
const options = {
  kuboRpcClientsOptions: ['http://localhost:5001/api/v0'], // optional, must run an IPFS node to use localhost:5001/api/v0
  dataPath: __dirname
}
const pkc = await PKC(options) // should be independent instance, not singleton
pkc.on('error', console.log)
```
### Error handling
A pkc instance is an EventEmitter, and so are the publications, communities, and comments it produces. Internal child objects forward their unhandled errors up to the pkc instance, but the pkc instance itself has no default error listener.
You **must** attach an `'error'` listener on the pkc instance, or pkc-js can crash your Node.js process:
```js
pkc.on('error', (err) => console.error(err))
```
If you cannot attach a listener at the pkc level, install a process-wide fallback so an emitted error does not bring the process down:
```js
process.on('uncaughtException', (err) => console.error(err))
```
Attaching an `'error'` listener directly on a `community`, `comment`, or other publication object stops the bubble-up: in that case the error stays on the child and is not re-emitted on the pkc instance.
### `pkc.clients.libp2pJsClients[key].heliaNode`
#### Block storage and eviction
The in-process libp2p/Helia client caches every block it fetches. Blocks are persisted per runtime
(on disk under `dataPath` in Node, in IndexedDB in the browser) so a restart or a page refresh does
not re-fetch content that was already verified, and the cache is bounded by a size-capped LRU:
once `maxBytes` is reached the least recently used blocks are evicted down to `lowWaterRatio` of
the cap.
Defaults are 250MB in the browser and 1GB in Node, which at a measured ~20MB/hour for 65
communities subscribed and updating is roughly 12 hours and 2 days of continuous use respectively.
Override with `blockstoreOptions`:
```js
const pkc = await PKC({
    libp2pJsClientsOptions: [{ key: 'main', blockstoreOptions: { maxBytes: 50 * 1024 * 1024 } }],
    httpRoutersOptions: ['https://peers.pleb.bot']
})
```
Nothing is pinned: every cached block is refetchable from the network, so eviction is safe and an
eviction that lands during an in-flight load costs a re-fetch rather than an error. Supplying your
own `heliaOptions.blockstore` disables all of this and hands block storage to you.
> When the instance runs an in-process libp2p/Helia node (`libp2pJsClientsOptions`), `heliaNode` returns the running [Helia](https://github.com/ipfs/helia) node so libraries that share the node (e.g. [@bitsocial/pubsub-voting](https://github.com/bitsocialnet/pubsub-voting), [bitsocial-seeder](https://github.com/bitsocialnet/bitsocial-seeder)) can drive it directly. This accessor is the public, semver-covered surface for reaching the node — a breaking change to what it returns is a breaking pkc-js release. Do not reach through the private `_helia` field.
The returned node is guaranteed to carry, in addition to Helia's own surface:
| Surface | Description |
| -------- | -------- |
| `libp2p.services.pubsub` | The [gossipsub](https://github.com/ChainSafe/js-libp2p-gossipsub) service registered at node construction |
| `libp2p.services.fetch` | The [`@libp2p/fetch`](https://github.com/libp2p/js-libp2p/tree/main/packages/protocol-fetch) service registered at node construction |
| `blockstore` | The node's block storage (bitswap-backed retrieval) |
| `libp2p.contentRouting` | The delegated-routing aggregation over `httpRoutersOptions` |
The accessor's return type is exported from the root entry as `HeliaWithLibp2pPubsub`, and the client's type as `Libp2pJsClient`.
#### Example
```js
const pkc = await PKC({ libp2pJsClientsOptions: [{ key: 'main' }], httpRoutersOptions: ['https://peers.pleb.bot'] })
const helia = pkc.clients.libp2pJsClients['main'].heliaNode
helia.libp2p.services.pubsub.subscribe('my-topic')
```
#### Parameters
| Name | Type | Description |
| ---- | ---- | ----------- |
| createCommunityOptions | `CreateCommunityOptions` | Options for the `Community` instance |
##### CreateCommunityOptions
An object which may have the following keys:
| anchor | `{publicKey: string}` or `undefined` | `undefined` | (Community owners only) Create a **delegated** community: the community's identity is this anchor IPNS name, whose private key you keep, and the node generates its own signing (minter) key. Mutually exclusive with `signer`. Every record the community publishes advertises this anchor in a signed `anchor` field, so readers who reach the record through the minter recover the identity. See [docs/protocol/delegated-ipns.md](docs/protocol/delegated-ipns.md) |
| ...community | `any` | `undefined` | `CreateCommunityOptions` can also initialize any property on the `Community` instance |
// create a new local community as the owner with a premade signer
const signer = await pkc.createSigner()
const community = await pkc.createCommunity({signer})
// signer.address === community.address
// create a new local community as the owner with a premade signer, already with settings
const signer = await pkc.createSigner()
const community = await pkc.createCommunity({signer, title: 'Memes', description: 'Post your memes here.'})
// create a delegated community: this node signs and publishes it, but the identity is an anchor
// key that never reaches the node. Not resolvable until the anchor record An -> Mn is published.
const community = await pkc.createCommunity({anchor: {publicKey: '12D3KooW...'}})
// community.address === anchor publicKey, community.signer.address === the node's minter key
// sign the An -> Mn record with the anchor private key, which stays on this side, then hand the bytes
// to the node. PKC.createAnchorIpnsRecord is exported for exactly this, see docs/protocol/delegated-ipns.md
const record = await PKC.createAnchorIpnsRecord({anchorSigner: As, minterIpnsName: community.signer.address, sequence: 0})
await community.publishAnchorRecord(record)
// instantiate an already existing community instance
const communityOptions = {address: '12D3KooW...',}
// start publishing updates every 5 minutes
await community.start()
// instantiate an already existing community instance and initialize any property on it
      }
    },
    pageCids: {topAll: 'Qm...', new: 'Qm...', ...pageCids}
| disablePubsubChallengeExchange | `boolean` or `undefined` | Make the community read-only over the network. The node stops subscribing to the challenge/publication pubsub topic and the published record omits `pubsubTopic`, so clients know not to attempt a challenge exchange and fail fast with `ERR_COMMUNITY_CHALLENGE_EXCHANGE_DISABLED`. The owner can still publish through the local shortcut (same process or through the RPC server running the community). The configured `community.pubsubTopic` is kept while the setting is on, including across a restart, and is published again as-is when the setting is turned off |
#### Example
```js
// TODO
```
### `community.start()`
> Start listening for new posts on the pubsub, and publishing them every 5 minutes. Only usable if the community database corresponding to `community.address` exists locally  (ie. you are the community owner).
#### Example
```js
const options = {
  title: 'Your community title'
}
const community = await pkc.createCommunity(options)
// edit the community info in the database
await community.edit({
  title: 'Memes',
  description: 'Post your memes here.',
  pubsubTopic: '12D3KooW...'
})
// start publishing updates/new posts
await community.start()
```
### `community.stop()`
> Stop polling the network for new community updates started by community.update(). Also stop listening for new posts on the pubsub started by community.start(), and stop publishing them every 5 minutes.
### `community.update()`
> Start polling the network for new posts published in the community, update itself and emit the 'update' event. Only usable if community.address exists.
Attach your `update` and `error` listeners before calling `update()`, as in the examples below. Some events can be delivered while `update()` is still resolving (for example the initial snapshot of a community that is already updating, or a warm-start update on the default transport), so a listener attached afterwards can miss them. The one exception is events the server emitted while subscribing over PKC RPC (fresh subscriptions made by `community.update()`, `comment.update()`, `publish()`, and `community.start()`): those are delivered on a later tick, so even a listener attached immediately after the awaited call resolves, before yielding to the event loop, still receives them. This also means properties populated by those events (for example `community.updatedAt` after `update()`) may not be set yet when the call resolves; react to the events rather than reading properties synchronously afterwards. If a community has no `error` listener of its own, its errors bubble up to the `pkc` instance's `error` event instead.
#### Example
```js
const options = {
  address: '12D3KooW...'
}
const community = await pkc.createCommunity(options)
community.on('update', (updatedCommunityInstance) => {
  console.log(updatedCommunityInstance)

  // if you want to stop polling for new updates after only the first one
  community.stop()
})
community.on('error', (error) => {
  console.error(error)
})
community.update()
```
### `community.exportCommunityModLogs(opts?)`
> Read the community moderation log — the `commentModeration` records (removals, approvals, locks, spoilers, pins, bans, flairs, etc.) stored in your local community database. Only usable if the community database corresponding to `community.address` exists locally (ie. you are the community owner); a read-only `RemoteCommunity` throws `ERR_COMMUNITY_NOT_LOCAL`. Works whether the community is started or stopped.
#### Parameters
| Name | Type | Description |
| ---- | ---- | ----------- |
| opts | `ExportCommunityModLogsOptions` or `undefined` | Optional filters and ordering |
##### ExportCommunityModLogsOptions
An object which may have the following keys:
| Name | Type | Description |
| ---- | ---- | ----------- |
| startTimestamp | `number` or `undefined` | Only include moderations with `timestamp >= startTimestamp` (unix seconds) |
| endTimestamp | `number` or `undefined` | Only include moderations with `timestamp <= endTimestamp` (unix seconds) |
| commentCid | `string` or `undefined` | Only include moderations targeting this comment CID |
| limit | `number` or `undefined` | Maximum number of rows to return. Must be a positive integer (`>= 1`) when provided. Omit to return all matching rows |
| order | `'ASC'` or `'DESC'` or `undefined` | Sort by `timestamp`. Defaults to `'DESC'` (newest first) |
#### Returns
`Promise<{ moderations: CommentModerationTableRow[] }>` — the matching moderation rows, with JSON columns (`signature`, `author`, `commentModeration`, `extraProps`) parsed into objects. The `{ moderations }` wrapper leaves room to add totals/pagination later without breaking callers.
#### Example
```js
const community = await pkc.createCommunity({ address: '12D3KooW...' })
// newest 100 moderation actions targeting a specific comment
const { moderations } = await community.exportCommunityModLogs({
  commentCid: 'Qm...',
  limit: 100
})
for (const mod of moderations) {
  console.log(mod.timestamp, mod.modSignerAddress, mod.commentModeration)
}
```
## Comment API
The comment API for publishing a comment as an author, or getting comment updates. `Comment`, `Vote` and `CommentEdit` inherit `Publication` class and all have a similar API. A `Comment` updates itselfs on update events after `Comment.update()` is called if `Comment.cid` exists.
### `comment.publish()`
> Publish the comment to the pubsub. You must then wait for the `'challenge'` event and answer with a `ChallengeAnswer`.
#### Example
```js
const comment = await pkc.createComment(commentObject)
comment.on('challenge', async (challengeMessage) => {
  const challengeAnswers = await askUserForChallengeAnswers(challengeMessage.challenges)
  comment.publishChallengeAnswers({ challengeAnswers })
})
comment.on('challengeverification', console.log)
