# Media and Entertainment

## Industry structure

**Content creation:** Studios (film/TV), record labels (music), publishers (books/news), game developers, independent creators.
**Distribution:** Streaming platforms (Netflix, Spotify, YouTube), broadcasters, cable systems, cinemas, retail.
**Technology:** CDN, DRM, recommendation algorithms, ad tech, measurement.
**Rights management:** Music licensing (ASCAP, BMI, SESAC for performance; Harry Fox/MRI for mechanical), film rights, publishing rights.

## Rights and licensing

### Music rights

Every song has TWO copyrights:
**Master recording:** Owned by recording artist/record label. Needed to use the actual recording.
**Musical composition (publishing rights):** Owned by songwriter/publisher. Needed to use the song.
Using music in film, TV, or commercial requires both licenses.

**Performance rights:** Bars, venues, radio play require license from PROs (ASCAP, BMI, SESAC).
**Sync license:** Use music in video content (film, TV, ads, games). Negotiated directly with rights holder.
**Mechanical license:** Reproduce/distribute a song. Compulsory license available at statutory rate in US.

### Film/TV rights

**Option:** Pay to hold rights to a story/script for a period (often 12-18 months) before committing to purchase.
**Chain of title:** Documented trail of all ownership and license agreements. Essential for financing and distribution.
**Errors and Omissions (E&O) insurance:** Required by distributors. Protects against copyright, trademark, privacy claims.

## Streaming economics

**Netflix-style SVOD:** Monthly subscriber fee. Content cost = fixed. Marginal viewer = near zero cost.
**Ad-supported streaming (AVOD):** Free to user; revenue from ads. CPM-based.
**Transactional (TVOD):** Pay per view/purchase. Digital stores (iTunes, Amazon Prime Video).
**Window strategy:** Theatrical → PVOD → SVOD/AVOD → linear TV. Windows compressed as streaming dominates.

**Revenue waterfall (film):**
Box office → Distributor takes 40-50% → Marketing and distribution costs recouped → Participations and residuals → Net profit (often illusory due to creative accounting).

## Digital media and creator economy

**Monetization models:** Ad revenue (CPM/RPM), brand sponsorships, subscriptions (Patreon, Substack), merchandise, events, licensing.
**YouTube revenue share:** ~55% to creator, 45% to YouTube. $2-10 RPM typical ($2-10 per 1,000 views).
**Spotify:** ~$0.003-0.005 per stream. 1 million streams ≈ $3,000-5,000.
**Music on social media:** TikTok, Instagram, YouTube — blanket licenses with labels. Creator doesn't directly earn from music use.
