# Water Management

## The water cycle

**Evaporation → Transpiration (from plants) = Evapotranspiration → Condensation → Precipitation → Surface runoff + Infiltration → Groundwater → Evaporation (cycle repeats).**
**Residence times:** Atmosphere: ~9 days. Rivers: ~2 weeks. Soil moisture: weeks-months. Groundwater: years-thousands of years. Ice sheets: thousands of years.

## Water scarcity

**Physical scarcity:** Insufficient water resources. Arid regions.
**Economic scarcity:** Water exists but inaccessible due to infrastructure/investment gaps.
**Water stress:** A region uses > 40% of available freshwater. Over 3 billion people live in water-stressed areas.
**Groundwater depletion:** Many aquifers being depleted faster than recharge. Ogallala Aquifer (US), North India Aquifer, Saudi Arabia.
**Climate change impact:** Changes precipitation patterns, increases evaporation, accelerates glacier melt (which feeds rivers). Wet areas getting wetter; dry areas drier.

## Water quality

**Contaminants:**
Microbial: Bacteria (E. coli, Vibrio cholera), viruses, protozoa (Cryptosporidium, Giardia). Major cause of disease in developing countries.
Chemical: Nitrates (agriculture), heavy metals (lead, arsenic), pesticides, pharmaceuticals, PFAS (forever chemicals).
Physical: Sediment, turbidity, temperature.

**Treatment approaches:**
Household: Boiling (kills microbes), chlorination, filtration (ceramic, sand, activated carbon), UV disinfection.
Municipal: Coagulation → settling → filtration → disinfection (see environmental engineering skill for detail).

**PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances):** Emerging contaminant. Found in firefighting foam, non-stick cookware, packaging. Extremely persistent ("forever chemicals"). EPA set MCLs of 4 ppt for PFOA and PFOS (2024).

## Water conservation

### Agriculture (70% of global freshwater use)

Drip irrigation: 30-50% reduction vs. flood irrigation.
Soil moisture monitoring: Irrigate only when needed.
Drought-resistant crop varieties.
Deficit irrigation: Deliberately mild water stress during non-critical growth periods.

### Urban/industrial

**Low-flow fixtures:** Toilets (1.28 gpf vs. 3.5 gpf old), showerheads (1.5 gpm vs. 2.5 gpm), faucet aerators.
**Leak detection:** 10% of US homes have leaks wasting 90+ gallons/day.
**Rainwater harvesting:** Collection and reuse for irrigation, toilet flushing.
**Greywater reuse:** Sink/shower water for irrigation and toilet flushing.
**Industrial water recycling:** Closed-loop cooling systems; process water reuse.

## Water governance

**Transboundary water:** 60% of freshwater flows cross international borders. 286 international river basins. Treaties and cooperation frameworks essential (e.g., Mekong River Commission).
**Water rights:** Prior appropriation (western US — "first in time, first in right") vs. riparian rights (eastern US, most of world — landowners adjacent to water).
**Human right to water:** UN declared access to safe drinking water and sanitation a human right (2010).
