# Korean Language and Education

## Hangul (한글)

Korean alphabet invented by King Sejong in 1443. Most learnable script for foreign learners.
**Consonants (자음):** ㄱ(g/k) ㄴ(n) ㄷ(d/t) ㄹ(r/l) ㅁ(m) ㅂ(b/p) ㅅ(s) ㅇ(ng/-) ㅈ(j) ㅊ(ch) ㅋ(k) ㅌ(t) ㅍ(p) ㅎ(h).
**Vowels (모음):** ㅏ(a) ㅑ(ya) ㅓ(eo) ㅕ(yeo) ㅗ(o) ㅛ(yo) ㅜ(u) ㅠ(yu) ㅡ(eu) ㅣ(i).
**Syllable blocks:** Consonant + Vowel (+ optional final consonant). Can be learned in one day.

## TOPIK (Test of Proficiency in Korean)

TOPIK I: Levels 1-2. Reading + Listening.
TOPIK II: Levels 3-6. Reading, Listening, Writing.
Level 4: Required for many Korean university programs.
Level 5-6: Professional/academic fluency.

## Korean university entrance — CSAT (수능 / Suneung)

Taken in November. One of most stressful exam days in Korea.
**Subjects:** Korean Language, Mathematics, English, Korean History (mandatory), plus electives.
**Score:** Raw scores converted to grade scale 1-9 (1 = top 4%).
Seoul National University: Requires near-perfect scores.

## Korean education system

Elementary: 6 years. Middle school: 3 years. High school: 3 years. University: 4 years.
**Hagwon (학원):** Private academies extremely prevalent. Students often study until midnight.
**Military service:** All males serve 18-21 months.
