## Fiber classification

### Natural fibers

**Cotton:** Cellulose. Comfortable, breathable, absorbent. Wrinkles easily. Washable.
**Linen:** Cellulose. Strong, crisp, cool. Wrinkles badly. Softens with washing.
**Wool:** Protein (keratin). Excellent insulation. Natural crimp traps air. Felts if agitated wet.
**Silk:** Protein (fibroin). Strongest natural fiber. Lustrous. Weakens in sunlight.
**Cashmere:** Undercoat of Cashmere goat. Ultra-soft. 2-3 micron diameter.

### Synthetic fibers

**Polyester:** Most produced synthetic. Wrinkle-resistant, quick-drying. Hydrophobic.
**Nylon:** Strong, elastic, abrasion-resistant. Hosiery, activewear.
**Spandex/Elastane/Lycra:** 500-600% stretch and recovery. Always blended.
**Viscose/Rayon:** Regenerated cellulose. Natural-feel but weak.
**Lyocell/Tencel:** Most sustainable regenerated fiber. Closed-loop process.

## Fabric construction

### Weave structures

**Plain weave:** Each warp thread alternates over/under each weft. Muslin, poplin.
**Twill weave:** Diagonal rib visible. Denim (3×1 twill), chino, herringbone.
**Satin weave:** Long float before interlacing. Smooth, lustrous. Charmeuse.

### Knit structures

**Jersey (single knit):** Most common T-shirt fabric. One face smooth, other looped.
**Rib knit (1×1, 2×2):** High stretch and recovery. Cuffs, neckbands.
**Interlock:** Double knit. Stable, smooth both sides.
**French terry:** Loops on inside. Sweatshirts, joggers.

## Fabric properties

**Drapability:** How fabric falls. Silk chiffon drapes; canvas does not.
**Hand:** Softness, crispness, roughness, warmth. Critical for fashion selection.

## Finishing processes

**Mercerization (cotton):** NaOH treatment. Increases luster, strength, dye uptake.
**Sanforization:** Pre-shrinking. Max 1% residual shrinkage.
**DWR coating:** Durable water repellent treatment.

## Sustainable textiles

**Organic cotton:** No synthetic pesticides. GOTS certified.
**Recycled polyester (rPET):** From plastic bottles. Lower carbon footprint.
**Linen:** Low water use, minimal pesticides. Biodegradable.
**Greenwashing alert:** Bamboo viscose is NOT inherently sustainable.
