# Interior Design

## Space planning

**Circulation:** Primary paths 36", secondary 24", clearance around furniture 18".
**Furniture arrangement:** Conversation groups 8-10ft diameter. TV viewing 7-10ft.
**Traffic flow:** Never obstruct natural path from entry to kitchen/living/bedroom.
**Scale and proportion:** Sofa should not exceed 2/3 width of wall behind it.

## Design principles

**Balance:** Symmetrical (formal), asymmetrical (modern), radial (around focal point).
**Rhythm:** Repetition of colors, shapes, patterns creates visual flow.
**Emphasis/focal point:** Fireplace, art, large window — every room needs one.
**Contrast:** Light vs dark, rough vs smooth, large vs small.
**Unity:** All elements feel they belong together.

## Color and light

**Undertones:** Warm (yellow, red, orange) vs cool (blue, green, purple).
**60-30-10 rule:** 60% dominant (walls), 30% secondary (upholstery), 10% accent.
**Paint LRV (Light Reflectance Value):** 0-100. Dark room = LRV 60+. Bright accent = LRV below 40.

### Lighting layers

**Ambient:** General room illumination. Overhead, recessed.
**Task:** Directed for work. Desk lamp, under-cabinet kitchen.
**Accent:** Highlights art or features. Picture lights, spotlights.
**Decorative:** Pendants, chandeliers, sconces as design elements.
**Color temperature:** 2700-3000K warm (living spaces). 3500-4000K neutral (kitchens, offices).

## Materials

**Flooring:** Hardwood (60-80 year lifespan), engineered wood (20-30 years), LVP (25-30 years), tile (50+ years).
**Countertops:** Quartz (durable, non-porous), granite (natural, requires sealing), marble (beautiful, high maintenance).
**Fabrics:** Performance fabrics for high-traffic. Crypton, Sunbrella — stain and moisture resistant.

## Major design styles

**Scandinavian:** White, natural wood, minimalism, functionality.
**Mid-century modern:** Organic forms, walnut, tapered legs, bold accents.
**Industrial:** Exposed brick, concrete, metal, Edison bulbs.
**Japandi:** Japanese + Scandinavian. Wabi-sabi, natural materials, neutral palette.
**Maximalist:** Bold colors, pattern mixing, collected objects.
