# Industrial Design

## Design process

### 1. Research and discovery

User research, ethnographic observation, market analysis, competitive analysis.
**Design brief:** Problem statement, constraints, target user, success criteria.

### 2. Ideation

Quantity before quality. Generate 100 ideas to find 3 worth developing.
**Thumbnail sketches:** Small, fast, many ideas. 5-10 minutes each.
**Concept sketches:** More developed, perspective views, exploded views.

### 3. Design for manufacturing (DFM)

**Injection molding (most common for plastic):**
Draft angles: 1-3° taper on vertical walls allows part ejection.
Uniform wall thickness: ±25% variation maximum. Thick sections cause sink marks.
Ribs for stiffness: Height ≤ 3× wall thickness.
Minimum inside radius: 0.5mm minimum. Sharp corners cause sink marks.

**Cost considerations:**
Tooling (mold) cost: $5,000-100,000+ depending on complexity.
Unit cost economics: Injection molding becomes economic at 5,000+ units.

### 4. Ergonomics

**Anthropometric data:** Use 5th-95th percentile range.
Design adjustable products to cover 5th-95th percentile (90% of users).
**Power grip handle diameter:** 30-38mm.
**Screen distance:** Reading 400-600mm. Monitor 500-700mm from eyes.

### 5. Rendering

**KeyShot** (industry standard), **Blender Cycles** (free), Fusion 360 rendering (free education).
Light source must be consistent. Highlight = product form language.

## Sustainability in product design

**Design for disassembly:** Screws not glue. Snap-fits that release. Labeled materials.
**Circular design principles:** Reduce material, increase longevity, enable repair.
