# Fashion Design Fundamentals

## Design elements in fashion

**Silhouette:** Overall shape. A-line, hourglass, column, trapeze, peplum.
**Line:** Seams, darts, edges direct the eye. Vertical lines elongate. Horizontal add width.
**Texture:** Surface quality — matte vs sheen, rough vs smooth, stiff vs fluid.
**Color:** Hue (color name), value (lightness/darkness), saturation (intensity).
**Pattern:** Geometric, organic, figurative, abstract.
**Proportion:** Relationship of parts to the whole. Golden ratio applies.

## Color theory for fashion

**Color wheel basics:** Primary (red, yellow, blue), secondary (orange, green, violet), tertiary.
**Color harmonies:**
Complementary: Opposite colors. High contrast. Red + green, blue + orange.
Analogous: Adjacent colors. Harmonious. Blue + blue-green + green.
Triadic: Three equidistant colors. Vibrant.
Monochromatic: Variations of one hue. Sophisticated.

**Seasonal color (Pantone Fashion Color Report):** Published twice yearly. Sets industry palette.

## Trend forecasting

**Macro trends:** 5-10 year cycles. Sustainability, gender fluidity, digital fashion.
**Micro trends:** 1-2 year cycles. Specific colors, silhouettes, fabrics.
**Fashion calendar:** 4-6 collections per year for most houses.
Haute Couture → Ready-to-Wear → Resort → Pre-fall → Fast fashion

## Collection planning

**Capsule collection:** 8-12 coordinated pieces that mix and match.
**Color story:** 4-6 colors that work together throughout collection.
**Fabric families:** 2-3 main fabrics + accent fabrics.
**Ratio:** 60% core pieces / 30% fashion pieces / 10% statement pieces.

## Portfolio development

**What to include:** 8-12 looks. Sketches, fabric swatches, finished garment photos.
**Fashion illustration:** Elongated 9-head figure. Stylized to show garment, not anatomy.
**Digital tools:** Adobe Illustrator (flats), Procreate (sketches), CLO3D (3D visualization).
