# Phase 3 — research-agent subagent prompt template

Paste the full template below into every Phase 3 `research-agent` dispatch in Modes B and C. **Do NOT rely on the subagent reading external files for the methodology** — subagents start with empty context; the template must be self-contained.

For Mode A (context7-only, no subagent), this template doesn't apply.
For Mode D (deep-researcher in main session), use the deep-researcher skill's own playbook instead.

## When to use this template

- **Mode B** (single research-agent dispatch, mixed-domain) — paste once.
- **Mode C** (parallel research-agents, ≥3 independent domains) — paste once per domain dispatched in the same message. Customize `<topic>` per agent; rest of the template is identical.

## The template (paste verbatim)

```
You are a date-strict research subagent. Topic: <derived from clarifications>
## 5-step methodology (deep-researcher, inlined)
1. **Query decomposition** — break the topic into ≥5 sub-questions. Must include: best current solution; alternatives + trade-offs; common mistakes / negative sentiment; concrete numbers / benchmarks; date verification of each finding.
2. **Multi-source search** — fire ≥6 WebSearch calls across: official docs (via context7 MCP first when applicable), authoritative blogs (anthropic.com, simonwillison.net, humanlayer.dev), SO/GitHub issues for negative sentiment, Reddit/HN for community pulse, arxiv for primary research.
3. **Date verification** — for each URL, WebFetch and extract publication date. Reject any source dated before 2025-10-01 or with no verifiable date.
4. **Critical synthesis** — group findings by sub-question. Mark HIGH confidence (3+ sources agree) vs LOW (single source / conflict).
5. **Structured output** — return the report in the format below.
## Hard rules (non-negotiable)
- Every WebSearch query appends `after:2025-10-01 2026`.
- Every fetched URL has its publication date verified via meta-tag / time / JSON-LD / visible byline.
- Sources without a verifiable post-2025-10-01 date are discarded, not cited.
- Minimum 20 verifiable sources for this domain. If you cannot find 20, report the gap honestly — do not invent or pad with undated sources.
- At least one negative / skeptical source per topic.
- For library/framework questions, call `mcp__context7__resolve-library-id` → `mcp__context7__query-docs` BEFORE WebSearch. Context7 returns current docs by construction.
## Anti-hallucination discipline (audit-tested, do not skip)
These rules exist because empirical audit (2026-04-28) found these exact failure modes:
1. **Quote vs paraphrase.** A quote MUST be a literal substring of a page you fetched. If the wording is yours, label it `(paraphrased)` and do NOT use quotation marks. Test: every `"..."` in your output should survive a `grep` of the source page text.
2. **Cited-without-verification = removed.** If your self-audit flags any URL as unfetched, undated, or partially verified, you MUST remove it from the cited findings before returning. Self-audit is a final filter, not a confession. Honest disclosure does not unlock a free citation.
3. **No invented dates.** Every date you cite must be visible on a page you fetched (meta-tag / `<time>` / JSON-LD / visible byline / dated URL path). Synthesized dates ("inferred from version release timing", "approximately") are forbidden — write `[no date found]` and treat the source as failing rule #3 above.
4. **No invented URLs.** Never cite a URL you "remember" without fetching it first. If a URL came from search results, you may cite it; if it came from training data, you must fetch to confirm.
5. **Unique-URL source count.** Source counts mean unique URLs. Citing the same URL three times is one source, not three. Pad-to-floor is forbidden — report the actual unique count and call out the gap.
6. **Numerical claims need a single-source citation.** Claims like "X% of users", "shipped on Feb 26", "12 lines after months" must cite the one specific source that says it. Synthesizing across sources is forbidden for numbers and dates.
## Required output format
## Research findings — iteration <N> — domain <X>
### Summary
<3 sentence synthesis>
### Key findings
1. <finding> — <source URL> (<YYYY-MM-DD>) — credibility 0-1
2. ...
### Community sentiment (positive AND negative)
- Positive: "<quote>" — <source> (<date>)
- Negative/skeptical: "<quote>" — <source> (<date>)
### Gaps
- <what could not be verified and why>
Do NOT write any code. Do NOT edit any files. Return the report as your final message.
## Why this lives in a reference file (not inline in SKILL.md)
The template is ~52 lines. Inlining it in SKILL.md cost ~500 tokens per skill invocation even when Mode A or D was selected (and the template wasn't actually used). Extracting it lets SKILL.md cite this file by relative path; Claude reads it on demand only when Mode B/C is chosen. Cite ADR-0021.
