# Epic 2: API Implementation Validation & Completion - Brownfield Enhancement

## Epic Goal

Achieve 100% implementation coverage and validation of all documented n8n REST API methods (23 total from official API docs), ensuring complete parity between documentation and MCP server implementation with comprehensive testing and quality assurance.

## Epic Description

### Existing System Context

**Current Relevant Functionality:**
- MCP server with 14 implemented tools for n8n workflow management
- Multi-instance support for production/staging/development environments
- JSON-RPC 2.0 protocol over stdio and HTTP
- Comprehensive API documentation covering 23 n8n REST API methods across 4 categories (from official n8n API docs)

**Technology Stack:**
- TypeScript/Node.js
- @modelcontextprotocol/sdk for MCP implementation
- Axios for HTTP client
- n8n REST API v1 (tested with n8n 1.82.3)

**Integration Points:**
- `src/index.ts` - MCP tool registration and request handling
- `N8NApiWrapper` - API method implementations
- `EnvironmentManager` - Multi-instance routing
- `docs/n8n-api-docs/` - Complete API documentation (24 methods)

### Enhancement Details

**Current Situation:**

**✅ Fully Implemented:**
- **Tags API**: 5/5 methods (100%)
  - GET /tags, GET /tags/{id}, POST /tags, PUT /tags/{id}, DELETE /tags/{id}

**⚠️ Partially Implemented:**
- **Workflows API**: 8/9 methods (89%)
  - ✅ Implemented: GET, POST, PUT, DELETE, activate, deactivate, execute, list
  - ❌ Missing: PATCH /workflows/{id} (partial update)

- **Executions API**: 3/4 methods (75%)
  - ✅ Implemented: GET /executions, GET /executions/{id}, DELETE /executions/{id}
  - ❌ Missing: POST /executions/{id}/retry

**❌ Not Implemented:**
- **Credentials API**: 0/6 methods (0%)
  - GET /credentials, GET /credentials/{id}
  - POST /credentials, PUT /credentials/{id}, DELETE /credentials/{id}
  - Test credentials functionality

**Documentation Status:**
- ✅ 24 methods fully documented in `docs/n8n-api-docs/`
- ✅ Examples, error codes, best practices documented
- ⚠️ Documentation not yet validated against live n8n instance

**What's Being Added/Changed:**

1. **Missing Method Implementation:**
   - Implement PATCH /workflows/{id} (partial workflow updates)
   - Implement POST /executions/{id}/retry (retry failed executions)
   - Implement complete Credentials API (6 methods)

2. **Validation & Testing:**
   - Create comprehensive test suite for each API category
   - Validate all 24 methods against live n8n instance
   - Verify documentation accuracy with real API responses
   - Create automated validation scripts

3. **Quality Assurance:**
   - Compare implementation vs documentation for each method
   - Verify request/response formats match n8n API specs
   - Test error handling and edge cases
   - Validate multi-instance routing for all methods

4. **Documentation Sync:**
   - Update documentation based on validation findings
   - Add implementation notes and limitations
   - Create method-by-method implementation checklist
   - Update CHANGELOG and version tracking

**How It Integrates:**

- New methods added to `N8NApiWrapper` following existing patterns
- Tool registration added to `src/index.ts` MCP server
- Validation tests integrated with existing test infrastructure
- Documentation updates maintain current structure in `docs/n8n-api-docs/`

**Success Criteria:**

2. ✅ Each method validated against live n8n instance (v1.82.3+)

This epic consists of 12 user stories organized by API category and implementation phase:

### Phase 1: Validation of Existing Implementation (Stories 2.1-2.3)

#### Story 2.1: Validate & Test Workflows API (8 methods)

## Story Implementation Order

**Phase 1 (Validation) - Stories 2.1, 2.2, 2.3:**
- Can be executed in parallel
- Establishes validation baseline
- Identifies documentation gaps

**Phase 2 (Missing Methods) - Stories 2.4, 2.5:**
- Sequential execution recommended
- Depends on Phase 1 validation
- Completes Workflows and Executions API

**Phase 3 (Credentials API) - Stories 2.6.1 through 2.6.6:**
- Sequential execution required (each story builds on previous)
- Order: List → Get → Create → Update → Delete → Test
- Largest implementation effort

**Phase 4 (Documentation) - Story 2.7:**
- MUST be executed last
- Requires all previous stories complete
- Final validation and sync

## Risk Mitigation

**Primary Risk:** Breaking existing functionality during implementation

**Mitigation:**
- Phase 1 validation establishes baseline before changes
- Each story includes regression testing requirements
- Test suite runs against all methods after each story
- Multi-instance routing tested for all new methods
- Rollback plan for each story

**Secondary Risk:** Documentation inaccuracy

**Mitigation:**
- All validation against live n8n instance (v1.82.3)
- Document discrepancies during validation phase
- Story 2.7 synchronizes all findings
- Version documentation with implementation

**Rollback Plan:**
- Each story is isolated and independently revertible
- Version control checkpoints after each story
- Documentation rollback separate from code rollback
- Test suite identifies regressions immediately
