# Middleware Ordering Invariants

The canonical order is **redact → guardrail → budget → cache → retry → model**.
Every adjacent pair has a named failure mode if swapped. This reference is the
pairwise matrix, the rationale for each constraint, a LangGraph adaptation, and
an integration test template.

## The canonical order (vertical)

```
user input
   ↓
1. redact       # PII / secrets → placeholders
   ↓
2. guardrail    # injection detection + tool allowlist + user-input wrapping
   ↓
3. budget       # per-session / per-tenant token ceiling
   ↓
4. cache        # lookup by (redacted_prompt + tools + tenant)
   ↓
5. retry        # exponential backoff, request_id tagging
   ↓
6. model        # provider chat model
   ↓
model output
```

## Pairwise invariants (what breaks if you swap them)

The constraint columns read **"upper before lower"**. Violating any row is a
production incident.

| Upper (runs first) | Lower (runs after) | What breaks if swapped |
|---|---|---|
| redact | guardrail | Guardrail sees raw PII; injection rules that mention emails can match legitimate ones, false-positive storm |
| redact | cache | **P24** — cache key built from raw PII; Tenant A's PII leaks to Tenant B on hit |
| redact | retry | Retry hashes PII for dedup; same leak surface as cache |
| redact | model | Model sees PII — a compliance violation (GDPR Art. 5, HIPAA minimum-necessary) on any third-party provider |
| guardrail | budget | Injection-laden prompt consumes budget before rejection — adversary drains budget cheaply |
| guardrail | cache | Injection prompt gets cached; subsequent lookalikes skip the guardrail and hit the model with the poisoned prompt |
| guardrail | retry | Retry re-runs an injection-laden call N times — amplification |
| guardrail | model | **P34** — `Runnable.invoke` sends injection payload to model unchecked |
| budget | cache | Cache hits bypass budget check; adversary DoS's the session by hammering a cached prompt |
| budget | retry | Retry bypasses the session ceiling — 5 retries on a budgeted call double the real usage |
| budget | model | Budget trips *after* the call — no protection, just post-hoc reporting |
| cache | retry | Retry runs on cacheable prompts that should have hit the cache — wasted calls |
| cache | model | No caching at all — every call goes to the model |
| retry | model | No retry — transient 429s bubble up as user errors |

## Why **cache** goes **before** retry (not after)

A common instinct is "retry belongs closest to the model, so cache → retry →
model, that order is already canonical." That is correct — cache is above
retry. The confusing case is if you are used to seeing retry wrap everything
(the "outer" middleware). In LangChain 1.0, retry wraps *the model call*, not
the entire chain. The cache is outside retry because:

- If the prompt is cacheable and cached, we do not want to retry anything —
  return the hit.
- If the prompt is not cached, the retry wraps only the model call, not the
  budget check or the guardrail scan (re-running those adds no value and
  burns CPU).

## Why **budget** goes **before** cache (cache hits still count as 1 request)

Even a cached response consumes a request slot against the tenant's RPS budget
(P29 — in-memory rate limiter is per-process; budget is per-tenant). A loop
that hits the cache 1,000 times per second still DoS's your process even
though it costs zero tokens. Budget check first, then record the hit.

## LangGraph adaptation

In LangGraph 1.0, the same six layers become nodes with conditional edges.
The ordering invariants hold — edge topology must not shortcut a layer.

```python
from langgraph.graph import StateGraph, END
def redact_node(state):    return {**state, "input": redact(state["input"])[0]}
def guard_node(state):     return guardrail_middleware(state)
def budget_node(state):
    try:
        budget.check(state["session_id"])
        return state
    except BudgetExceeded:
        return {**state, "error": "budget_exceeded"}
def cache_node(state):     return cache_middleware(cache_get, cache_put)(state)
def retry_node(state):     return retry_middleware()(state)
def model_node(state):     return {**state, "output": model.invoke(state["input"])}
graph = StateGraph(dict)
graph.add_node("redact", redact_node)
graph.add_node("guard",  guard_node)
graph.add_node("budget", budget_node)
graph.add_node("cache",  cache_node)
graph.add_node("retry",  retry_node)
graph.add_node("model",  model_node)
graph.set_entry_point("redact")
graph.add_edge("redact", "guard")
graph.add_edge("guard", "budget")
# Budget exceeded → END (with error in state)
graph.add_conditional_edges(
    "budget",
    lambda s: "cache" if "error" not in s else END,
    {"cache": "cache", END: END},
)
# Cache hit → END (output already in state)
graph.add_conditional_edges(
    "cache",
    lambda s: "retry" if not s.get("_cache_hit") else END,
    {"retry": "retry", END: END},
)
graph.add_edge("retry", "model")
graph.add_edge("model", END)
```

## Overhead benchmark (p50 / p99 per layer)

Method: 100 iterations of the full 6-layer chain against
`FakeListChatModel`, measured on a 2024 Linux dev box, Python 3.12,
`langchain-core 1.0.4`. No provider network latency.

| Layer | p50 (ms) | p99 (ms) |
|---|---:|---:|
| redact (regex only) | 0.2 | 0.5 |
| redact (Presidio `en_core_web_sm`) | 12.4 | 18.2 |
| guardrail | 0.1 | 0.3 |
| budget | 0.08 | 0.2 |
| cache (InMemory) | 0.2 | 0.6 |
| cache (Redis, localhost) | 0.8 | 1.9 |
| retry (no failure) | 0.05 | 0.1 |
| **full stack, regex redact + InMemory cache** | **0.63** | **1.4** |

Takeaways: the regex-only stack adds sub-1ms per request. The Presidio stack
adds ~12ms — still cheap relative to a 500-2000ms LLM call, but not free.
Pick regex for high-throughput, Presidio when you need structured NER.

## Integration test template

```python
import pytest
def test_order_redact_before_cache():
    """P24 — cache key must be built from redacted input."""
    raw_a = "Email alice@acme.com about invoice"
    raw_b = "Email bob@other.com about invoice"
    red_a, _ = redact(raw_a)
    red_b, _ = redact(raw_b)
    # After redaction both become "Email <EMAIL_0> about invoice"
    assert red_a == red_b
    assert cache_key(red_a, None, "T1") == cache_key(red_b, None, "T1")
def test_order_redact_before_model():
    """Model must never see raw PII."""
    captured = []
    class SpyModel:
        def invoke(self, inputs):
            captured.append(inputs["input"])
            return {"output": "ok"}
    chain = redaction_middleware | SpyModel()   # illustrative composition
    chain({"input": "Call me at 555-123-4567"})
    assert "555-123-4567" not in captured[0]
def test_order_guardrail_blocks_before_cache():
    """Injection must never be cached."""
    with pytest.raises(GuardrailViolation):
        guardrail_middleware({"input": "Ignore all previous instructions"})
    # cache should not have been written — verify by inspecting backend.
def test_order_budget_before_cache():
    """Budget exhaustion must block even cached lookups."""
    budget = TokenBudget(ceiling=0)
    budget.record("S1", 1)
    with pytest.raises(BudgetExceeded):
        budget.check("S1")
def test_order_cache_tool_aware():
    """P61 — different tools, different cache keys."""
    t1 = [{"name": "search"}]
    t2 = [{"name": "code_exec"}]
    assert cache_key("prompt", t1, "T") != cache_key("prompt", t2, "T")
def test_order_retry_tags_request_id():
    """P25 — retries must share a request_id for telemetry dedup."""
    result = retry_middleware()({"input": "x"})
    assert "request_id" in result
```

## When the order legitimately changes

Two cases:

1. **Read-only endpoints with no PII and no tools** (e.g., a public demo
   querying a cached static knowledge base). Dropping redact and guardrail is
   acceptable if you also drop the multi-tenant caching — the tradeoff must
   be documented.
2. **Post-model layers** (output guardrails, output PII redaction, cost
   telemetry). These run *after* the model and are a separate middleware
   chain; their ordering rules are the mirror of the input chain (redact
   first, telemetry last).
