# Roadmap: TODO CLI Application

## Overview

This roadmap outlines the development plan for building the TODO CLI application using REIS v2.0 wave-based methodology.

**Total Duration**: ~2-3 hours
**Phases**: 2
**Waves**: 3

---

## Phase 1: Core Functionality [2 waves]

**Objective**: Build the foundation - storage layer and CRUD operations

**Duration**: ~2 hours

### Wave 1: Project Setup & Storage [S]
**Size**: Small (1-2 tasks, 30-45 min)
**Tasks**:
- Set up Node.js project structure with package.json
- Implement JSON storage layer with atomic writes
- Create storage utilities (read, write, backup)
- Add unit tests for storage operations

**Deliverables**:
- `package.json` configured
- `src/storage.js` with save/load functions
- `tests/storage.test.js` with 100% coverage

**Success Criteria**:
- ✅ Can write tasks to JSON file
- ✅ Can read tasks from JSON file
- ✅ Atomic writes prevent corruption
- ✅ All tests passing

---

### Wave 2: CRUD Operations [M]
**Size**: Medium (3-4 tasks, 45-60 min)
**Dependencies**: Phase 1 Wave 1 complete
**Tasks**:
- Implement task creation (add command)
- Implement task listing (list command)
- Implement task completion (complete command)
- Implement task deletion (delete command)
- Add validation and error handling

**Deliverables**:
- `src/tasks.js` with all CRUD functions
- `tests/tasks.test.js` with comprehensive tests

**Success Criteria**:
- ✅ Can add tasks with unique IDs
- ✅ Can list all tasks with formatting
- ✅ Can mark tasks complete with timestamp
- ✅ Can delete tasks by ID
- ✅ Proper error handling for invalid operations

---

## Phase 2: CLI Polish [1 wave]

**Objective**: Create polished CLI interface with help text and error messages

**Duration**: ~1 hour

### Wave 1: CLI Interface [M]
**Size**: Medium (2-3 tasks, 45-60 min)
**Dependencies**: Phase 1 complete
**Tasks**:
- Set up Commander.js CLI framework
- Create CLI entry point with command routing
- Add help text and usage examples
- Implement error message formatting
- Add version command

**Deliverables**:
- `src/cli.js` - Commander.js setup
- `bin/todo` - Executable entry point
- `tests/cli.test.js` - CLI integration tests

**Success Criteria**:
- ✅ All commands work from terminal
- ✅ Help text is clear and comprehensive
- ✅ Error messages are helpful
- ✅ Version command shows correct version
- ✅ Exit codes are correct (0 for success, 1 for errors)

---

## Milestones

### M1: Core Complete ✓
- **Target**: After Phase 1 Wave 2
- **Criteria**: All CRUD operations working programmatically
- **Checkpoint**: "Core CRUD functionality complete"

### M2: CLI Ready ✓
- **Target**: After Phase 2 Wave 1
- **Criteria**: Fully functional CLI tool
- **Checkpoint**: "CLI interface complete - v1.0 ready"

## Wave Sizing Guidelines

This project uses REIS v2.0 wave sizes:

- **[S] Small**: 1-2 tasks, 15-30 minutes
  - Single responsibility
  - Minimal dependencies
  - Quick to verify

- **[M] Medium**: 2-4 tasks, 30-60 minutes
  - Related tasks forming a feature
  - Some integration complexity
  - Requires testing

- **[L] Large**: 4-6 tasks, 60-120 minutes
  - Complex feature or refactoring
  - Multiple integration points
  - Extensive testing needed

---

## Checkpoints

Checkpoints are savepoints where you can safely pause work:

1. **After Phase 1 Wave 1**: "Storage layer complete"
2. **After Phase 1 Wave 2**: "Core CRUD operations complete"
3. **After Phase 2 Wave 1**: "CLI interface complete"

Create checkpoints with:
```bash
reis checkpoint "Checkpoint message"
```

## Risk Management

### Low Risk
- ✅ Well-defined requirements
- ✅ Proven libraries (Commander.js)
- ✅ Simple architecture

### Mitigation Strategies
- Atomic file writes for data safety
- Comprehensive unit tests for reliability
- Clear error messages for usability

---

## Future Phases (Post-v1.0)

These are potential future enhancements, not in scope for initial release:

### Phase 3: Enhanced Features
- Task priorities (high, medium, low)
- Due dates with reminders
- Task categories/tags
- Search and filter commands

### Phase 4: Data Features
- Export to CSV/Markdown
- Import from other TODO formats
- Backup and restore commands
- Task statistics and reports

### Phase 5: Advanced CLI
- Interactive mode
- Fuzzy search for tasks
- Shell completion scripts
- Color themes
